First of all, I hope I don't get anyone mad with the subject title ^_^' I'm a huge j/k-pop fan but that's exactly why I get questions like that.

I'll walk around with the headphones blasting Korean and/or Japanese lyrics. Even some Chinese every now and then. But I don't really know how to speak any of these languages and my only hope is to search for translated lyrics.

The question that I get asked so often is "Why do you listen to that? Can you understand everything?"

Like I said, I sometimes look for the translated lyrics. But even if I can't find it, I just love the music overall.

I just wanted to know everyone else's reason to listening to the popular anime theme songs, and just songs from popular foreign singers overall whether you truly do understand it or you just love the beat.

commonly I guess some people are brain dead, they do not understand the simplicity of music is meant for enjoyment, I do not see the reason why you cannot enjoy other cultural music or languages. After all, they are there, why not listen to it.

However, one thing out of topic, is that I hate people who worships the Japanese pop stars like gods, in laymen terms, "weeaboo" like, everything Japanese they praise disregarding the actual value, now if that is the reason why one is always listening to J/K/C pop or rock, then of course, people around you tend to question why you listen. If you like the music by all means go ahead, that I support.

What I do not support is people who likes anything that is Jap origin.

For the count, I also have people asking why do I collect Mongolian tribal chants and cultural songs (from tourism CDs) and Italian, Spanish, Russian, Mexican, songs. Only one thing mattered, I am open-minded and I enjoy what I will.

Yup, if you want to, why not listen to it? no one can forbid you to do so. Just dont worship Japan. Remember, its just a country, like the rest of the nations. And always be open for new music. For example, has any of you heard "Ro*kola Bacalao" or "Caceria de Lagartos"?

becase its differet most american music teds to be the same or horrible like rap

There are plenty of reasons why i listen to Japanese songs...

I'm not Japanese but the main reason why i listen to Japanese songs mainly because i just i like the language and would assist me in learning the language better since i'm also taking class for it...Also, since i've lived in Japan before, by listening to the words makes me feel nostalgic. Furthermore, being an anime fan its kind of odd to not to listen to the songs... :p

I concur with everything that devildue has so brilliantly eloborated on. For me, I as well listen to j-rock/pop and anime themes and I don't understand the lyrics. I tend to listen to the music more than the words but I am also the kind of person that listens to like almost everything. Lyrics that I don't understand or do understand, as long as it sounds good it's going in my ipod :D

I listen to other music out of the fact that the beat is good or I like the instramentals used... and lyrics do sound cool sometimes... but nevertheless I'm sure that the people who are asking these questions "why do you listen to that stuff?" have probably listen to something forein themselves(double standards!) in the end it all aways come down to the point of that music is a form on entertainment to be enjoyed, so live it up!

I like the way the songs sound with me.

I listen to all types of asian music, may it be korean, japanese, chinese, taiwanese, etc. I listen to basically it all. And i do know japanese completely, some of the others listed as well. I suppose its best that you actually know what your listening to..you dont want to get way into the sing..start singing it..and come across someone who understands it and get hit in the face incase the song is rude and such. But i guess some people do listen to it for the background music and sound^.^

I listen to music for the music part more than the lyrics and alot of J pop that i listen to is very catchy and has a nice sound to it.

I listen to j-music because of its different melody.. unlike american music which had mostly same rhythm.. j-pop/j-rock matches my taste in music... sometimes my friends or family asked me if i can understand the lyrics... i just answer them that i dont care about the lyrics... i just focus myself on the good music... sometime i find myself singing japanese songs eventhough my lyrics are improper... hahaha....

I listen to asian music because it's better in my opinion and everyone likes different things. I don't understand the lyrics, true (unless it's in Chinese) but the reason why I listen to it is because I don't like the hard rock/punk/hip-hop or whatever they call it in the US. Everyone likes those boy bands way too much. But they're not bad, just not for me. I like softer, sadder songs. Not necessarialy that they're all like that. It's just the rythm and notes!

Must be because I like it XD

When asked that, I'm so tempted just to shout out "Why do you listen to what you do?!" x_x I get the same question weekly from my family...irritating.

As for why I listen to it, I have simple standards: poetic lyrics and beautiful composition. For the most part, I must rely on foreign bands in order to satisfy my taste in music! Mostly I listen to Japanese, but really only J-rock and particular J-pop artists. It's just like I said, it needs to sound lovely, and have poetic lyrics to make me want to listen.

You don't really need to understand the lyrics to understand what hte song is about you know. A lot comes from tone and how it's sung. Like classical music for instance. There are happy and peppy songs and there are songs of despair and wrath. There are no lyrics but you can just feel the emotion.

Also some people just like the beats and the sound of the language they listen to. It doesn't matter that they can't understand the lyrics.

You can ask the same question for: Why listen to English music (If you don't know the language)

Iono, maybe cuz it sounds good to us. The tone of the music too get you motivated and yes, it is different from American music.

I love the way that the songs are sung, the beat of the music, I just love the voices of the people that sing them, they have beautiful and cool voices, especially the females. Though I mostly love the songs from anime's, I haven't really listened to songs that aren't on anime's. Sure I may not know everything thing that is sung but I do know some of what's sung. But the main reason I listen to them is because it calms me down and relaxes me, I can just put on the songs, lay back in my chair, and even sleep or nap with the songs on, they just totally relax me that much. Well that's why I listen to Japanese songs.

Music is more than just lyrics. When someone asks me that I ask them two questions in return.
1. Do they listen to any purely instrumental music? (proves the point that the words are only part of it) and
2. Why would I want to listen to a translated version when almost all translations of music lyrics are basically edited due to the difficulty of just translating much less translating to a tune

I am listning to asian kung fu generation right now. i speack japanese but not fluently so i dont get every thin but u cant look at the lyrics as the main point of the song the style and way that the lyrics are sung is everything.

music is art and people enjoy it for different reasons
