Can Manga be created outside the East Asia?

I found it difficult to word the title, but what I mean is, does Manga that was created in somewhere other than Japan count as Manga?

Long ago I only read manga if it was by a Japanese artist, nowadays I have warmed to artists from other parts of east asia, like Korea or China (Man-hwa or something) as I feel they also write/illustrate in a similar way. But no matter how much I try, I can't accept American or European manga, to me it doesn't look the same, read the same or feel the same.

I thought about it in it's basic form, Manga is a Japanese word used to describe a particular style of Japanese comic, simple. In this way, Manga can only come from Japan. What happens when others mimic the style? If they're not Japanese, how can it be a Japanese comic, therefore how can it be Manga? o_0

Do Manga style comics from other countries deserve their own categories, similar to Koreans Man-hwa? or do they count as just regular old comics?

I was just wondering what anybody else thought on this subject, living in the UK I've grown up in a multi-cultural society and it shows in the range of people I call my friends, and I wonder how far classification reaches. Should Manga specifically be the reserve of Japan, in order to retain it's identity, or does it need to be made available to all?

Any thoughts would be appreciated :)

Well the word Manga in Chinese is Man Hwa and it basically translates in to the term comic in english, but you never hear anyone saying comic that comes from Japan or anything so I think that Manga should be reserved for Japan and maybe the other East Asia countries such as China or Korea. But then I guess its all up to the readers to decide what they read 'feels' like a manga or not.

generally its used to associate where it came from, manga is just another term used for japanese comic

when you think of the word comic you think of american made ones such as xmen and such, then when you hear Manga, you think of the japanese comics such as.........well whatever you think of when you hear the word manga :p

but also manga may be used for asian origin comics as well, i guess its all up to personal preference, but for me i use "manga" to refer to japanese comics

Well, I just had a quick look at Wikipedia for something called "World Manga".
Manga is originated from Japan, so OFFICIAL mangas only come from there. But the style is so popular, other countries have decided to make their own version of it. So I think technically, Weastern mangas belong in the World Manga/Amerimanga catergory.

But I draw manga (or at least try...) and I'm from outside Japan... So as long as you try to keep the style exactly like manga, they you can call it manga. Not like Teen Titans, where they adopt manga techniques.

manga started from jap, some ppl bought the copyrights and translated it into chinese or officially english, some people scan it from shonen jump, a japanese mag, and translate it.

I've seen american or european cartoons resembling anime, so why shouldn't other comics that copy the style be considered manga? Instead of thinking that manga belongs to the japanese only, i would be glad the style is spreading more and more, because i've read some petitions that came from America, and they said some horrible things about anime/manga. Does it really matter where it comes from?

manga is a style...it can be done anywhere....

I know that it's a style ... but I don't think it can be done anywhere, recently some of the American artists have started to get quite close(in my opinion), but still haven't reached the same 'feel'.
I don't mean to disrespect the artists, but I can't see how War On Flesh is manga, it doesn't look or feel like it, but for some reason it's been labelled as manga. CRAZY!

Surely manga is a style of Japanese comics and Amerimanga is a distant relative? I'd prefer Manga to be Japanese as I assume they would have a better understanding of how to develop it. It appears to be heavily influenced by their culture and history ... the art style can be copied with practice, but the people writing the stories and populating the frames are the ones who make it more than an art style, they make it manga, make it Japanese!

It sounds a little psychotic, (kinda like a sermon or evangelical speech) but I'm having a tough time trying to communicate what I'm thinking, maybe I should get a brain interface :)

i will say no.
Manga began in japan and it will continue to stay that way. why should it be claimed the same as american comics or european comics or whatever comics that's not from japan or anywhere inside asia?
not only is the style of drawing completely different, the feel is different.
usually the manga's drawn from japan/china/korea has a softer and gentle feel and touch in it
wherelse the countries outside asia has a rougher feeling in their comics.
plus i get frustrated whenever i read comics like spiderman, superman, x-man or whatever man that's from marvel comics.
so let Manga stay where it should be and not be claimed as the same as comics from outside asia.

Manga is just a word that translate to comics. But when we think Manga we think Japanese Comics, so it's like a shortened version in our culture. I have read some Korean comics, they have similar style and stories, although you can see some culture differences in their traditions. Either way, there's also some Koreans who live in Japan, and make manga there. But if it's directly from their own country, I think it should be called something different, not to confuse people between Japanese comics and Korean.
