Please tell me the military ranks for EA, ZAFT, Ord Union in Gundam SEED and Destiny

merged: 04-03-2006 ~ 04:49pm
Please....please....please....

One can imagine that they probably follow the ranking structure of the U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, and so forth I'm guessing. EAF should be the same as the U.S. military ranking structure...

Here's a link with more detailed info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orb_Union

ya i noe bout that website but i wanna noe 4 orb cos there it is all in Japanese but if u can really clarify EA n Zaft that'll b great cos in ZAFT, Talia's a Captain but wears a Commanders uniform.
And Lacus whos a Commander, acts like a Captain in the Eternal

Maybe the whole Talia wearing a Commander's uniform was a mistake on Fukuda's part.

Lacus is pretty much the Commander of the Clyne Faction and is the Captain of the Eternal in a way. A Commander has similar duties to a captain, but with more responsibilities.

Orb's forces, according to the wiki article, is based on the Army/Military ranking structure. Same with the EAF and ZAFT forces, but also including the Naval ranking structure.

For the EAF, the rankings are pretty much the same as real military (US), except they use the Navy names instead of Army names. [ie in dub, Mwu's title is "Lieutenant Commander" (Navy), not "Major" (Army)]

As for ZAFT, it doesn't seem as clear. I've asked this question once on another board, and someone there was able to answer it for me quite well:

Quote: "Zaft is a militia not a military meaning it is made up of civilian volunteers. In essence it doesn't have a formal ranking structure and its members are addresses by descriptive titles like Commander and Captain.

Usually given Commander if in command of a team or squad like Rau and Andy and can command one or more vessels, while Captain is more often given to those in command of a single ship like Talia in GSD.

The Zaft forces are organised into independant teams named after their commanding officer which is why you here terms such as "Le Creuset-team" for Rau's special forces team (Athrun, Yzak etc) or "Zala-team" for when Athrun was in command of several Earth based missions.

I should note that command positions can be given based on skill and merit, but can also be given based on personal connections with those in power and is pretty much the reason why Athrun was given command of the team while on Earth and not - say - Yzak.

As for uniforms, they are colour coded based on achievements rather than rank so the only way to know what rank a person is truely is to listen to their name and position being said.
Anyway as for what the different uniforms are:

Green - The bog standard uniform of most soldiers, technicians and piltos
Olive - Ground combat soldiers
Bright Green - Mechanics only
Red - Elite soldiers and pilots like Athrun who graduated top of their class at Zaft academy. Being "reds" they aren't necessarily higher rank than "Greens", it just means they are better soldiers or pilots according to their skills
Black - Officers such as ship Captains and their XO as well as high-ups in Zaft who make the decisions like Patrick Zala
White - Distinguished officers and usually those who have been awarded Zafts highest military decoration, the Nebula medal. Almost always a ship captain or a commander (team leader as mentioned above)
Purple - Members of PLANT Supreme Council, space navy task force commanders and officers that are in a position above regular black wearing officers."

For the captain and commander thing, it's a bit confusing when translated into English because the "captain" of a ship doesn't neccessarily reflect the ranking of that person. For example, even though Murrue is ranked as a Lieutenant Commander, she is still the captain of the AA, because her role fits that of a captain. Same with Natarle (Lieutenant Commander) and Andy (Commander). They're not ranked as Captains (or Colonel in Army rank) like Neo is, but they can still be in charge of the ship. The captain is essentially the one in charge of a ship (usually battleship), giving orders as to where to go, when to fire with what weapon etc, as well as in charge of the crew (like Murrue, Ades, Talia, Andy, Natarle).

As for Rau and Lacus, they're referred to as Commanders. Although they have input into the operations of the ship, they don't actually direct it (like telling it where to go and what weapons to use). that's the captain's job (Ades and Andy). Their job is more of being in charge of the team and operation like the MS teams and maybe other ships in the group (like how Rau's in charge of Versaillius and Gamou)

As for Orb, I'm not quite sure, because their uniforms are harder to distinguish.

Anyway, hope that clears things up for you.

I have a question of my own, if anyone can answer it:
Why is Murrue the only one in the EAF with red shoulder stripes instead of black/grey/olive? In both SEED and Destiny, not one other person has red...

I dont really noe that much bout GS and GSD as i have not finish watching them so um... who's Fukuda?

his sort of the creator of gsd...!

oh thanks!

If anyone wants me to clear up any ranks in GS and GSD just ask. As for your question MapleRose, i believe Murrue has red shoulder stripes because shes from the 5th Speacial Division. She is also a reservist.

maybe they follow the standard ranks in the real life military? never paid attention to the GS ranks.. afaik military ranks goes something like the ff:

Private
Corporal
Sergeant
Lieutenant
Captain
Major
Lieutenant Colonel
Colonel
Brigadier General
Major General
Lieutenant General
General
Field Marshal

yup the earth alliance follow the standard military ranks that real world military used...

I just noticed something in ZAFT ship, Minerva. Maybe Talia is a commander, as her uniform shows, people just mistake her as Captain cos she always giving orders. As I recall in GS Rau, a commander, gave as many orders as the Captain. So I think Talia is a Commander and Athur a Captain, just wimpy. I cant explain y Talia is in the |Captain's seat though

No, Talia is the captain of the Minerva, as the crew refers her as "Kanchou" or "Gladys-Kanchou" (like how Murrue is referred to as "Ramius-Kanchou"). Arthur is the vice-captain, and sort of combat commander (as he coordinates the weapons) much like Natarle's role on the Archangel. Her uniform, as I explained earlier that ZAFT isn't as structured as the EA, thus the uniforms don't necessarily refer to their rankings as to their skill and experience etc.

Okay Darcy11311, I have a question for you about EA's uniform then. I see that the yellow and blue tabs on their collars show their rankings, but what about the stripe on the front of their shirt? You know, the yellow and red stripes on the left side of their coat? I mean, both Mwu and Murrue are wearing Lieutenant uniforms, as seen from the colours on their collars, but Mwu's uniform has yellow and red stripes while Murrue's only has the one red stripe. Is there rankings within rankings or something?

Ok Maple Rose, my opinion on the stripes on the left breast section of the EAF's uniform is this. I think they are either there name and section they are assigned to or some sort of medal. What do you think?

wads orb's ranking system?

in ZAFT
Green: Worn by common soldiers, technicians, or mobilesuit pilots. They designate that the personnel has completed standard training up to their expectations. These troops usually receive only about half year of training.
Olive: Worn by soldiers in ground combat situations.
Bright Green: Worn by mechanics only.
Red: Worn by elite mobile suit pilots, typically the top graduates from ZAFT's academy. Although they are respected, soldiers who wear red do not necessarily have higher positions than their green-clad comrades.
Black: Worn by the ship captains and executive officers or officers with high level of responsibility. This is also the color worn by ZAFT officers attached to or assisting ranking government officials.
White: Worn by senior or ranking ZAFT commanders or high-ranking ZAFT officials. Standard white uniforms are worn by senior ship captains who are in command of larger and more powerful capital ships, although they are still considered equivalent in rank to other ship captains. Added devices or denotations on the uniform increases the bearer's level of seniority, importance, and/or responsibility.
Purple: Worn by members of the PLANT Defense Council and bureaucrats associated with ZAFT. Once again added devices or denotations on the uniform represent the bearer's level of seniority, importance, and/or responisbility.
Custom Color Pilot Suits: Any mobile suit pilot in the ZAFT forces that proves him or her self in combat are allowed to have a custom color pilot suit. These pilots have no distinct rank but are usually better than their counter-parts. For example, Rey wore a white pilot suit, however he was not above the command of Talia and still had to follow commands like regular green pilot suit soldiers. Another example is Andrew Waltfeld. He was known as the Desert Tiger, and wore a special tiger-stripped orange pilot suit. While fellow submarine commander Marco Morassim wore the regular green pilot suit. Waltfeld was above the command of most other commanders and generals at the time. Usually, the custom pilot suit also came with a custom mobile suit. Heine had an orange coloured ZAKU Phantom and GOUF Ignited to match his pilot suit, Lunamaria remained with her red pilot suit and had her ZAKU repainted in the same color and hue. Miguel Aiman wore a standard green pilot suit, but had a custom painted and custom modified GINN of his own. Waltfeld had a special BuCUE armed with fangs and claws made to match his "tiger" outfit and an orange colored LaGOWE, complete with beam "fangs" and "claws". Nearly all FAITH members have their own custom colored suits (both pilot and mobile suit).

[edit] FAITH

FAITHFAITH (Fast Acting Integrate Tactical Headquarters) is an elite subset of ZAFT personnel that have remarkable war records and certain character traits. They are appointed by the PLANT council or the Chairman, to whom they are solely answerable. Their authority is above those of Squadron Commanders, and can presumably give strategic orders on the spot or override any orders given to them by anyone other than the Council.

FAITH members wear badges resembling a white wing emerging from a golden elliptical orb.

Known members of FAITH include: Henri Eugenie, Heine Westenfluss, Athrun Zala, Talia Gladys, Shinn Asuka(rank seemed revoked in GSDSE), and Rey Za Burrel.
