Ok, I buy the game and enjoy it right. Now that i'm half way done with the game, about 60 hrs. I took a lil peak at the walkthroughs online. My eyes opened when it says to get the Zodiac Spear not to touch any chests for the ultimate weapon. I was like wtf?! O.o Pretty lame for getting the ultimate weapon that way.

Now for a guy like me that likes a ultimate weapons on rpgs, is there any other way to get the spear? And if there is, please tell me how.

It's not that you can't open any chest just specific one's

1) Treasure chest in Lowtown, outside of Old Dalan's place
2) When sneaking into the palace (Before getting the Goddess Tear), there are several chests in the Cellar. Do not open the two chests in the southeast corner.
3) All treasure chests in the Confiscatory (the place where you get your weapons and armor back after being captured)
4) In the Phon Coast, later in the game, there is an island with 16 chests all near each other. The 4th chest that must NOT be opened is among these, so it is best to leave them all alone. They only contain Gil anyway.

But once you open them I'm sorry to say I've heard of no way to get it

there is another way 2 get it but it's IRRITATING AS HELL TO GET. u could try this if u don't want 2 start over.

in the secret area of the henne mines(on the way to get zodiark with all of level 60+ monsters), equip a diamond armlet and at the north end of the special charter shaft, go all the way down the longest shaft that u can see on the area map. there is a 10% chance that a treasure chest will be at the end and there is another 10% chance that the item in that chest is a zodiac spear.

in other words, u have a 1/1000 chance of getting it. it's a pain 2 get, but u could get more zodiac spears that way.
