Just wanted to hear some opinions about which one do you enjoy more: manga or
comics (by comics I mean superhero comics like X-men, Batman or Spawn). I prefer
manga because of the humour and complexity some stories can reach and also
because it's easier to follow it. However, comics like X-men: Apocalypse Era or
Batman+Superman really got my attention. What do U think?
I used to read comics before but now I read manga exclusively. Both comics and
mangas are entertaining but I feel I get better value buying mangs. If you can
read Japanese then you can learn so much about the current trend in Japan. You
can be educated on mundane subject matter as business. How many American comics
have subject matter that is educational?
Of course, if you enjoy what you read then that is what matters.
I like manga better because the stories are more emotional. (Well, at least for
me.) I've never been a fan of Spiderman, Batman, Hulk, etc. only because in
those stories one person is all powerful, and everyone else just looks pathetic.
In manga, at least there are many strong characters, and each person's
background gets developed.
Yeah I agree with mughi and Kelena. I used to read a lot of comics, you name
it...Superman, Batman, Spiderman, EVERY X-Men title. The thing with american
comics I notice...they all want to last forever. They can't just tell a story
and end it. I mean how long has Superman been running for as well as all the
others. Stand Alone Stories is what I like...stories that develop and go
somewhere, character relationships...american comics don't get much into these I
think. There are some great stand alone stories out there...The absolute best
X-Men story ever was...Age of Apocalypse (on a sidenote, there's a NEW Age of
Apocalypse stand alone comic out there...WOOHOO!) The Death of Superman,
Knightfall for Batman...those where the highlights of American comics for
me...oh I'd also point out the Onslaught story line I liked that as well since
it involved the whole marvel community. I think most of us might start out with
american comics (in america that is) and as we grow up we tend to evolve our
tastes and manga is usually a more adult oriented if you ask me...not all of
it...but most of it. So my vote would go to Manga.
Edit: I still follow artists and some writers in american comics...wouldn't it
be great to see some of those great american artists do a manga storyline?!
Manga is my preference. Most of the series I read are very dramatic/emotional,
matured oriented, and/or just plain funny yet have deeper story plot that suits
my taste. Some American comics got those elements too yet their stories don't
interest me anymore. I used to read X-men, Spiderman and other marvel stuff back
in the 90's til gradually, I lost interest in the stories as my interest in
Japanense culture increased which are in abundance in mangas.
comics aren't usually original, they follow the story of a particular person all
the time, like the superheroes. it's the artwork and presentation of the story
different. but still, there were good comics like frank miller's, and his idea
is completely original. of course i would prefer manga, cos' of the wide variety
of choices, and for each age group.
lol theres such a huge bias in here because this is an anime based site xD
but it is kinda true.... manga comes in all variety and with strong
stories........... unlike super heroes that always save the day >.> or
some kid named archie
Always manga. Not only are the stories better, but the overall quality of humor
is original, whereas comics tend to overuse plotlines and repetive jokes. All
that aside, I do own a rather large stash of Sonic The Hedgehog comics (by the
same people who brought us "some kid named archie". It's hard to find
issues of that in australia now, but I buy the odd one when I see it.
I've never read comics before...I guess over-muscular men flying around in
flourescent leotards never really interested me. But I do enjoy the movies they
base off of comics, like "Batman Begins"
Nothing can beat manga. Thats what I think . Comics are
too... muscular . I dont know how to explain it, but comics are just boring. I dont
like the way its drawn, and the humour have never intressted me.
I can't say I like all Japanese comics better or all American comics better. I
just judge the stories individually, instead of grouping all Japanese comics as
"one thing" and all American/Western comics (or in this case,
superhero comics) as "one thing". If you get what I mean.
both are great, but having read shitloads of both i'd say the artwork in mangas
is usually better while the writing in western comics is pretty much far
superior to what is found in japanese tomes. there are exceptions of course...
but i think there is a pretty good explanation for my conclusion, usually
manga's are done by one person, who writes and does the art, while western
comics have a team of people working on them (for the most part.) it's pretty
rare to find a talented artist who also happens to have the ability to weave a
good tale.
anyways, for those of you knocking comics, check out sandman, the swamp thing
volumes written by alan moore, the invisibles, desolation jones, almost anything
by j.m. dematteis, and midnight nation or the ongoing book of lost souls. if i
had to choose though i'd say manga, because Blame! is just too fucking
beautiful.
I just think both are more or less the same, I mean, like storyboards , because
they are "books" that telll you a story in a visual way. And, that's
for sure, this storyboards are different in each culture... spanish comics are
quite different from japanese or those from the USA. And that's good!
I must say I`m not a specially comic-fanatic , I
mean, most comics are not cheap, and besides usually it's not as easier to get
manga as to get those super-heros comics from the USA whose stories are not
always so attractive for me to read...~_~
As a very little kid I was amazed by the Superman film and
started reading some of his comics, but then they got too boring for me (the
plot was always the same, and the girls looked so stupid, always getting in
trouble and screaming and fainting everywhere at every time ),
threw away those handlets and forgot about them. I was more fond of Tintin and
Asterix... besides they were smart and fun, not just super-strengthed... and
they had lots of friends, and a dog I was a
kid, I liked those kind of things... Later I met
Spiderman; that was quite good, I read every Spiderman story I could put my
hands on... just a few, yep:(, for his owner was a young cousin of mine who
lives far far away...
Anime stories were always so appealing for me... The
baddies aren't just an evil intelligent guy or demon surrounded by tons of evil
and stupid comrades ;
baddies are really bad, you get shievers of terror with some of them, and their
"employees" aren't all stupid,
the fact is that some actually are dumb, but most of them simply have different
points of view, for ex., "why do I have to attack the goodie when i know
he's super-smart and has a big gun and I have not and so I will surely
die?" Besides, there's the point of the wonderful quest for Beauty that
manga/anime artists are in when they draw... Even the baddies or monsters can
look good! And the background is well designed and accurate not only to the
Time where the action develops, but also to the atmosphere required for each
character, and her thoughts/feelings. That's why I'd rather read some manga than
super-hero comics...
See ya!
You're only compairing manga to superhero comics? That's not a fair compairison,
there are other non superhero comics out there. So the superhero genre gets all
the attention, it's the marketing and the fact that Marvel and DC are the oldest
of them, DC being one of the few that survived the shake up the comic industry
had around the late 50's early 60's when the comics code was introduced. Now the
Comics industry in the US is a mere shell of it's former self. And I think
Marvel likes it that way.
I will not blindly say manga, nor can I completely side with comics. I can find
a good number of titles I can enjoy from both. It doesn't matter if it's Girls
Bravo, Ninja High School, Gundam, G.I. Joe, Sergeant Frog or Gold Digger, I like
then all. Ok so I grew up a little and stopped reading the superhero comics. A
few comics I really miss were sci-fi series named Fusion and Albedo.

they cant be beat
Yes i agree manga is better beccause it usally has more complex issues to it as well as not having just a plain super hero.
I find Manga better regular comics are not in good quality through all of it.
I used to read comics before but now I read manga exclusively. Both comics and mangas are entertaining but I feel I get better value buying mangs. i don't really read them much but you'll get more votes on the manga side since you've posted on an anime art community
.
