What I find to be the best method is to use the pen tool/layer mask. It allows
you to go back and quickly fix any mistakes so you don't have to worry about
getting everything absolutely perfect in one shot. Here
is a quick and easy to follow tutorial on this method.
Of course this isn't the only way to extract, but for me it is what works best.
I personally use the polygonal lasoo in Photoshop, sure manually cutting of a
few pixels at a time on a 4000x4000 image is time consuming but the results are
really nice. Watch out for jagged edges though.

Well, which programs do you have? Every program has a different way of doing it.
The Pen tool/ Layer Mask is done through Adobe Photoshop.
I only have paint from microsoft.. i'll go get photoshop now..

do i have to trace out every single portion that i want from a background via pen tool? it seems impossible though..

Well,I first use the polygonal lasso/magnetic lasso and I'll zoom in,and fixed the parts using the normal lasso.
