sure, societal standards keep us in check and maintains a certain amount of
uniformity in our way of thinking and living...
but, hang it all, should it be upheld to the extent of discrimination?
>=0!
if a normal looking, college student wants to watch anime, should she be
subjected to ridicule just because of these standards?!
-------
i actually wrote this in a resentful state, and meant to erase this afterwards.
but guess what... i found out that i CAN'T erase it, and that a lot of people
actually shared my sentiments... how remarkable.
Yes, I admit it's annoying, but most people don't think on their own and just
follow "trends" or do whatever everyone else tells them to. That's how
stupid standards are born, and, unfortunately, there aren't a lot of smart
people to "abolish" them.
Same goes anime. I wouldn't say that in my high school people hate anime or
point the finger at you for watching it. It's more like they're indifferent.
Some watch cartoons even! Which isn't so bad, because they don't even know the difference between anime
and cartoons, so they don't have anything against it.
My school has a very few number of anime lovers. The ones that we do have are
ridiculed, me not so much, not to say I am better but i get teased for other
reasons. I hate the social standards now a days. If you dress to nice you are
assumed gay, if you dress too slippy you are assumed poor and if you dont play
"cool" sports your a loser. If you dont like rap music and prefer rock
your goth/emo. Do i need to name anymore? I have come to the fact that I
strongly dislike people my age, (im 18 by the way) bot all of them but just the
jerks in general ya know.
u're absolutely ryt. my case about "anime taboo" is a teeny tiny part
of these restrictions... not a lot of people in my surroundings understand why i
luv listening to "cartoons" yapping away in foreign language. they
look at me with judgement in their eyes..*sniff sniff*....i wonder if they think
im crazy...
it's really funny that we, the people, create and perpetuate these standards,
yet we are the ones silently suffering for it. we basically created our own
prison and unknowingly locked ourselves up...sad, isn't it?
Quote by EILERONdid you know that in SOME
places, watching anime (except for the animators themselves) is unacceptable
adult behavior.....?
That is kind of absurd. Im lucky that im living in a democratic country were we
exercise our freedom very well. (as long as we don't commit crimes) Not much of
discrimination here.

well, its not exactly the kind of behavior that makes people wanna throw stones
at you... its considered like an abnormal habit for grown people to watch
"cartoons". they don't condemn, they just think its abnormal. but i
suppose don't mind being seen as a weird, eccentric oddball so much.
Quote by AkaikenGeez... it's one's want
and don't want to do anyway. Why think of what others will say to you? You're
not gonna live for them...
Just do what you want... nuff said!
good point... for people who can live on one's own thoughts. not all people have
the ability to be like that, though. other people have personalities that make
them more sensitive to external reactions. that's what makes it difficult to
shrug off comments. and one time or another, we all have been affected by what
others hav said...
like you said, though, it really has to depend on us in the end...i'll work on
that.
well its not our fault we like its like a hobby to us.Anyhow if ts so childish
well thats thier promblem!Because even so they are even more childish for
pointing it out sorta like tatel tailing right?.So we like anime i bet they're
jus jealous cause we can actualy stand up for ourselves and fight for our
right*whoot*!><
Well i luv anime i ill always luv it but then again do you think its right to
stop liking cause of social standards or for a job or sometin like that cause we
all know how the world is >=O

True... sometimes I, too, am kind of affected on what others say but most of the
time I don't care about it anyway. Most peepz say I'm weird, cuz I watch animes
and sing japanese songs, but for the HELL I CARE!
There're different perceptions of people to each other. It's just a matter of
accepting or rejecting... or dun giving much attention on it.
Ditto here... why listen to music or anime u cud not understnd? sometimes, this
criticism does get to me...
but most of the time i just smile at their ignorance (hehehe....)
each of us has our own weird side...this is ours, and i luv every freakin minute
of it.
I really try to ignore those retards that think they're so awesome they can
ridicule other people. But most people I know are pretty cool about it, others
are in a continual and viscious verbal war with me xD It isn't good for either
side most of the time....but the anime freaks win! Woot!
Anyways, it really doesn't matter what they say because the only opinion that
should matter is really your own, if you wanna watch anime then watch it,
regardless of what other people say.
just recently, somebody told me that soceital standards should not be ignored...
do you realize how chaotic and subjective our judgements would be without some
kind of common evaluation mechanism?
social standards = conformity
conformity can be defined as a change in a person's behavior or opinions as a
reult of real or imagined pressure from a person or group of people.
simply...people want to belong... to belong you need to conform. If you don't
carry novels around cuz everyone will laugh at you, or wear your hair a certain
way so no one will mock you, that's conformity. a person wants to belong so
there are sacrifices they must undertake. ofcourse it's not all bad, say for
instance you're walking down a street and everyone starts suddenly running in
the opposite direction. our human instincts will prompt us to run in that same
direction and do what everyone else is doing. that is conformity. in the good
sense : there was this rapidly spreading fire and everyone was running away, you
didn't see it but you ran too and saved yourself. the bad side, say it was a
whole misconception... someone screamed fire as a prank, everyone ran, you
ran...you're late to your job, it was a false alarm and your boss gives you a
good lecture that'll ake you never conform again :P
Discrimination, though, is not conformity though, at least not in most cases.
it's more of arrogance. in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the theories
of Darwin and Darwinism brought around a great change in all of the world and it
was believed that one race was superior to all others, some scientists started
making up medical proofs about how that race was superior and all the other
races were slowing down evolution and using up resources and so on...so they
must be eliminated. now not going into the horrors of what that theory brought
to mankind, Discrimination is simply arrogance and personally i think it's a
human sickness in their minds where they actually think they were born superior.
perhaps jealousy, could it be? or just the need to give themselves some
confidance? you could say that a child who grows up in a discriminating
environment becomes a racist...but i think it extends beyond that...we choose
what we want to believe, we believe what is convenient for us on most
occaisons...
well that normal looking college girl might as well set priorities, how much
does anime mean to her? for all i know...she could watch it in private ne? no
one likes to be ridiculed. ^^
Nope - I'm a normal-looking college girl who watches anime, lol.
I'd have to admit I don't look like the "stereotypical" anime fan
(aka. nerdy) but who cares!?
I've always loved anime and I always will! ^_^
I've never been ridiculed for liking anime, though..
Well, I say to manipulate the standards. When you're out in public or are doing
something that others can see, make sure that you look "normal" and
are doing something mainstream. Hold all of your desire for anime/manga until
you get home, and then EXPLODE! That's what I do. If I go to my ghetto school
and make it obvious that I like Anime, Manga and RPGs, I'll get my ass jumped
time and time again. So, in order to avoid getting beat up, I pretend to be like
a ghetto/semi-gangsta in school and in the area arround my school. But, when I
get home and into my room, my alias flies off and I let my true colors shine!
It's really depressing having to act like them and not having any real friends,
but....It's better than the two alternatives: either letting them know and get
beat up or actually denying myself what I love for good to change myself to fit
in. So, I believe that you should just put up an "Alias" for all of
those people who despise you.
see, this is what i notice among a lot of anime fans... We tend to keep our
fanaticism to ourselves..
Lionhearted911 suggested watching it in private... Burnoutboy holds in all
desire for anime till he gets home... he pretends to take up aliases and takes
up false identities(dramatic..) just so, as Lionhearted said, he can fit
in.
i understnd the point LH911 was trying to get across when he explained why we
follow standards. Belongingness is one of the major needs of a human being. ask
Maslow...hehehe
but that's precisely it. some of us are forced to treat our interest in anime as
something to be hidden from the world just so we can conform...
sometimes i ask myself...
is watching animated stories even though im no longer a child such a shameful
act that i have to hide it from the world and its rules?
or are the world's rules too harsh, causing me to feel embarrssed about
something i shouldn't be embarrsed about?

I think it's free to everone, for anime...
You like it is important, and based on , you can overcome
any difficulties....
in ur society, perhaps.... but thanks! ^_^
Yeah, societal standards are pretty annoying. It somehows makes you do things that you don't really like in order to go with the crowd.
did you know that in SOME places, watching anime (except for the animators themselves) is unacceptable adult behavior.....?
