DSL vs. Cable: Which one is better?

I currently prefer DSL, because I once had cable internet for a month, and the speeds occassionaly slow down to a crawl during the evening hours. But my friend who lives only a few blocks away has cable, whose speeds are blazingly faster than my DSL connection. So which one is better?

it depends on if its shared cable, i hate shared -_-; but i dont like dsl either, your dl/ul doesn't work right with dsl, and it does with cable.... so cable thats not shared would be cool ^^ and doesnt cost for each mb you download or upload

It all depends on the area you're on. If the either one is faster then go for the other one.

Price/Performance ratio would also count a lot.

As long as it's unlimited, I'm happy. That's pretty much all you have to care about ^_^ I think the only thing that sets the two apart is how they work.

cable...me use cable
though it sometimes slower and sometimes fast
but it has stable connection that i like.
and cable use less money every month for me to spent
. :D .

Alot of it depends on location; some areas only have one or the other, so in those cases there's obviously no contest. In those areas that do have both, I've generally found cable to be quite a bit faster, but also a bit more expensive. I use cable at home, while at the school/camp I work at over summers I installed a DSL line. My home cable line is definitely faster than the school's DSL, by around 2-3 times.

Of course, price comes into play as well. Many cable providers charge more for a cable modem if you don't subscribe to basic cable as well; the main reason the school chose DSL over cable. Even after taking that into account, I've noticed cable modems tend to be a bit more expensive, but that could just be my experience.

Of course, if speed is an issue, a good OC3 line (155 megabits per second) is pretty fast, though it'll eat up $20,000 to $45,000 a month. An oc192 line (9.6 gigabits per second) is even faster, but is primarily reserved for trans-atlantic cable systems. I doubt either option is available for residences, though.

A Cable line is shared throughout a neighbourhood while DSL is a independent line. It depends on if your neighbourhood uses cable or not. If they don't thatn u can expect pretty fast speeds =D

well in my area, comcast is really good. I use to get DSL from earthlink, that was slow dl and slow ul and it disconnects a lot. the dl speed was at around 85kb max and 10kb upload max. it sucked. now that i switched to Comcast. the speed now is around 355kb/sec dl and 45kb/sec upload and it never disconnects so i'm fairly happy with it. i would have to say cable is beter.

I prefer dsl; it's more reliable. I currently have cable, and it's horribly slow during high traffic hours.

Depends on where you live, the speed you get and the price you get it for. Around my area, DSL is pretty cheap and reliable but not as fast as cable. Some of my friends have cable but they tell me it sometimes likes to crap out on them for games, so it depends really.

I'm on a router on Cable and I used to get speeds of 400kb/s to 600kb/s with 100kb/s to 120 kb/s upload but now I'm down to 150kb/s to 300kb/s and the upload was down to 17kb/s recently but now that it's back up... It's good.

<3 Cable

I haven't had any problems with my Cable but when I had dsl It didn't seem to run all that well. I have much better ul/dl with Cable any ways.

depends on what kind of dsl you have. cable is a lot better tho most of the time if there arent many people in ur area with cable

I like my DSL modem since my internet provider allows unlimited download and upload with the basec service, so I don't have to pay a lot to download freely

unlimited dl/ul is impossible.

i agree it all depends on who your sharing it with or what isp your going through. but i'd prefer cable cause dialing even for a sec is annoying heh.

Be prepared to try both. :)

All things equal, I'd try cable first since it typically has higher download/upload speeds at the "regular" price point around $40 - $50/month. Comcast seems to be moving all their markets to 3 Mbps down and 256 (or so) kbps up. The downside is that companies like Comcast charges you extra if you don't also get cable TV service (I'm personally using DirectTV). One other potential drawback is if your cable modem carrier is Comcast, you got to watch out for the hidden download restrictions that can result in termination of your account.

If cable isn't available or proves to be troublesome, then I'd try DSL. DSL tends to be slower than cable, sometimes as slow as under 0.5 Mbps down. It really depends on how far you are to your CO and the quality of the phone lines. On the other hand, if you are really close to your CO and your CO is failry modern, you may have the option for much higher data rates. A friend of mine gets 6 Mbps down and 600 kbps up with five static IPs (i.e., he's allowed to have servers) for $100/month.

In my area, Comcast cable modem is month-to-month and so it's easy to cancel if it doesn't work out for you. A lot of the DSL deals requires a one year commitment.

Last thing to consider: some providers gives you free dial-up to be used when you are traveling or when your broadband connection goes down. Earthlink DSL has this feature (although you're limited to something like 25 free dial-up hours/month). I personally don't care about backup since I figure my broadband service won't be down for any extended periods of time. A friend of mine who does lots of online gaming (mmorpg) really needs that dial-up backup.

At the moment, there is no much difference between Cable and DSL but in a next few year, adsl2 will hit the market and the speed will dramatically improve from the current speed of adsl.

Cable for me. No contest since I've never used DSL. I've downloaded 10 GB of stuff in the past couple of days!

From my own experiences I prefer DSL. I find DSL gives better ping when playing games online, but cable has faster download speeds.

a/dsl. in oz, the fastest speed is currently 1.5mbps (which is shockingly bad -_-' ). ive currently got 256kbps ADSL cauz thats all i can afford by myself, plus i want money for other stuff, like heapsa beta comp and etc. anyway, back to the topic: i prefer ADSL because there is more versatility cauz all u pretty much need is a clean phone line. Cable, on the other hand, you will need an actual cable connection, which is more troublesome. Versitility-wise, adsl. plus, theres so many options of ADSL yo can choose from.

i run cable through a router. speeds can vary but i do like how cable is much easier to set up on other devices. i.e. the automatic settings are good.

but if i could afford it i would get a T1 line.

I'll sum it up quick. Note... be careful of the limitations set upon by the ISP specifically bandwidth limitations... I have unlimited up/down but it really depends on where you live
I've had both cable and dsl... and DSL is the way to go but cable has its plus sides too!

Don't forget to factor in other stuff like newsgroup access and such.

DSL -
good:
Fast / usually unaffected by uploading (good for BT) / It is not shared with other people dedicated line / stable
bad:
Distance to your closest regenerator or switching station (either a small box or the actual building. The maximum distance for any DSL to be decent is approx 6KM or ~ 3.75Miles
so the farther you live the more likely that you'll have lower speeds.

Cable:
good:
Typically faster then DSL (though once again... dependant on the ISP offerings... I'm basing it off the two major ones in my area)
bad:
shared line speed may drop during peak hours / uploading kills the download speed (even for surfing and especially if your upload cap is very small (~20KB/s)

usually some ISP's may offer trials! so try it out and if it doesnt work out then... go to another.

I guess it really depends on the location. Personally, I'd prefer cable. Fortunately, I've never had any bad experience with cable and it was always very fast.
