For the past two days, Southern California has been scorched by the worst
wildfires in four years. At least 15 different fires are raging through seven
different counties as far south as the Mexican border and as far north as Santa
Barbara, nearly 300 miles. The worst fires are in Los Angeles and San Diego
Counties putting over 15 million people in danger. Entire towns have been
evacuated, including those that were involved in firestorms in 2003. One of the
worst fires was in the beachside town of Malibu, near Los Angeles. Malibu is
known worldwide for its multi-million dollar homes. Many celebrities including
Mel Gibson, Kelsey Grammer(Fraiser), Jane Seymour(Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman),
Victoria Principal(Dallas) and Suzanne Somers(Three's Company) have been forced
to evacuate their homes. In San Diego County, the fires threatened San Diego
Wild Animal Park as well as the communities of Poway and Scripps Ranch, both of
which were devastated by the Cedar Fire in 2003. More than a quarter million
people have been evacuated from their homes in San Diego County. I'm worried
about my brother and his family. Although the fires haven't gotten to his house
in the Eastern County, he says he's ready to evacuate in case something happens.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency in Los Angeles,
San Diego, San Bernardino, Orange, Ventura, Imperial and Santa Barbara Counties,
that's nearly 20 million people. The Governor has also deployed the California
National Guard to help with the evacuations. Whether or not Bush will provide
Federal Aid has yet to be seen. He has just asked for another $46 billion
dollars for the war in Iraq. We could be using that money to provide help for
all the people that will be displaced by the firestorms. And things are just
going to get worse. Temperatures are expected to stay in the 90s until at least
Thursday with winds in the 40-50 MPH range. I really hope my brother doesn't
have to evacuate.
For latest news on the fires, I've posted links to two websites. One for Los
Angeles and one for San Diego.

Wildfires suck. I was in Alaska during one of the worst seasons they have ever
had. It was so bad that the noon sun was just a dim orange dot and it was like
trying to breathe with your face in a campfire unless you had a respirator. I
beleive Alaska lost over 6 million acres that summer.
I reallly feel for all those people in CA as I know exactly waht they are going
through
I just found out my brother and his family had to evacuate his house! I called
them just now and found they're all okay and they're staying with a friend in
Downtown San Diego. I just hope that they do get to go home.
My friend lives there. She had to evacuate on Sunday for 4hrs. She says half of
California is on fire right now; ;. I hope the people there will be safe. smoke
and ashes mess up their air way too.
Yeah, she's ok at home now. I'm glad for her but she said the airway is really
not healthy there. She wont be able to exercise(running) for a while. It's
amazing how we had constant rain for the last 2 weeks in Kansas and there's been
no rain at all in California.
yup! no rain here in California! which sucks! we sooooo need rain right now
especially because of the wild fires... i don't live in the mountain areas
(where mostly the wild fires are burning) but still, rain is what we really
need.
Has anyone heard what started the fires in the first place? Every time I check
the news I still haven't heard yet what was the cause of this in the first
place. I hope that you family will be able to go home, and that the fires stop
soon. I've never been through a fire, but where I live we've been threatened by
hurricanes and flooding, and I know it's scary worrying about whether or not
you'll have a place to come home too.
The wildfires in CA are producing some pretty jaw dropping images. Some I've
seen bear a striking resemblance to lava flows...that's a heck of a lot of fire.
I saw on the news a guy stayed and fought the fire with his garden hose! He
lived through it and I think he even saved his house. But, geez man! That was
risky. It's weird how the fires are leaving some houses in tact while
their neighbors are burnt to the ground. It's almost like tornado damage (kind
of).
I wish everybody's friends and family's safety as the fires rage on.

Saw somethign on the news today that said they had arrested soeone for alledgedly starting at least one of the fires
Yeah, this is what we (at least those I know) like to call it as:
"Here in San Diego, we don't have snow days, we have soot days"
So... yeah.
