I seriously have a problem here. What is with the way people treat obese and
over weight people in America? I mean I understand that some people are just
lazy and all they want to do is eat, but a lot of America judges, critisizes,
cuts down, looks down upon, and shuns over weight people. They act like over
weight people don't have feelings and they can say whatever they want.
I can't tell you how many times I've seen models who look like two legged
giraffes, or celebrities who look like skeletons. I don't mean to be insulting
towards them, but why does America think that THEY are so perfect and over
weight people are the image of imperfection? The media makes normal, regular,
every day girls think that they are not good enough because they weigh more than
120 lbs. I'm not saying that being thin is wrong, but when someone, anyone
thinks that they are not good enough because of their weight, it just doesn't
sit right with me.
There are people all over the country who watch the TV or read a magazine with
dreamy eyes wishing they looked like the people on them...why? Why, why why?
It's like America has brainwashed people into thinking if they are not perfect
like the people we see on TV, then they don't fit in. It just bothers me so much
to see an over weight girl is depressed because she wants to look like
Beyonce.
And I'm not saying that every obese person feels like this, some are happy the
way they are, but that doesn't stop some people from trying to cut them down
anyway. It just makes me sick how America has taught us that what's on the
outside is more important than what's on the inside, because you know what, you
could look like an angel and still be the biggest asshole in the world. But
seriously, obese women can men can be sexy too!
But I guess when it comes down to it, it's all a matter of opinion. I like
people for who they are, not what they look like and it pains me when one of my
friends will be upset because they want to lose weight and when I ask, they go
"I don't know." It's because the media has programed it into their
brains that they aren't supposed to be fat. I'm not trying to insult anyone, but
it just hurts me to see our so called "Great country" act like a bunch
of perfectionists when this country has some of the most problems in the world.
I have to admit it is sad to see how people are judged and critizied for such an
action. I mean we don't need this on top of everything else, and what really
sickens me is when mothers attacked britney spears because she looks good now,
in my opinion, from her earlier weight and mothers are upset about it? I mean
come on if you want your daughter/son to be that of a french fry size, the
straight as a board thing, then even that person has issues.
I know if people would take the harsh words and apply that same negative energy
to something entirely helpful then there would be so much more good then evil in
this world. I have a few over weight and even morbit obese people and they are
nice and sweet and kind it's those that have negative thoughts and act in such a
matter, like if they are in the same room with an over weight person they're
going to catch it like some sort of disease or something. Well actually it is a
disease, a disease that comes from both mental and from society, fast food is
not our friend, but some people have no choice in that matter...
For this sceniro I would like to have people watch, if they haven't already, the
video of what I've done by linkin park I think it sums up the entire scene of
how sad people have become, always wanting to be skinner while people are
staring and can't help to be thin, like some over weight people can't help but
be over weight.
For you see if a person has/had metal issues, genetic...people just need to wake
up and accept people like most people have accepted other races, for like I've
learned from society they think, some, not all, that over weight people is
another race of people...they just happen to be people that either can't help it
or aren't educated enough in what they can do about it now.
It's not just in america but this problem is actually going global now, which is
really sad in a way and I don't think anyone or anything can change that at this
time...perhaps in the future but only that person can change that about
themselves, sure they will still be slightly over weight but in the end it's the
health that these over weight people need to think about as well
Actually, if you look at the percentage of overweight people in the US compared
to other nations, it's dramatically higher. That pretty much means obesity is
way more accepted in this nation than anywhere else. Look at the school's
lunches, all the fast food chains, everybody using cars instead of
walking/biking, etc. If anything, I think the US pretty much
"promotes" obesity instead of fighting it or mocking it.
People should wanna be healthy on their own, and for no other reasons. If you
can't motivate yourself to take care of your own health, then why
bother?
America doesn't promote obesity. Fast food chains are only active so they can
make money. It has nothing to do with people being obese. People use cars so
they can get to far away that are too far to walk/bike. That also has nothing to
do with obesity.

I would have to disagree with this. Fast food is there for people that want a
quick meal and are too "busy" to cook a proper meal. They also offer
cheap meals so that the poorer people of america have no choice but to buy the
fattening greasy food. If America wanted people to be healthy they would start
making it easier for people to be that way.
Schools serve children fatty food everyday and make them pay extra for a salad.
They also have a huge lack of sports programs at the schools, so all the kids
can do is go home and sit and watch tv because they get too lazy to actually go
outside and play.
For the workers of America, all the best paying jobs are nothing but office jobs
for people to sit and grow fatter. They dont ride a bike to work or walk because
its too far and towns arent built for people to be able to get around that way.
You have to have a car to go to the store, the bank, to school, anywhere. That
makes it so people get less and less excersize that is greatly needed for most
of the people in America.
I agree that people do look down on obese people too much and think too highly
of celebrities, but they also make it too hard for people to be healthy. All the
food that is good for you is far too expensive for the average person to be
buying on a daily basis, forcing you to go and buy the thing that is making you
fat in the first place. Of course, you could always go out and take a walk
everyday... but most people wouldnt want to, or think they dont have the time
to.

Coincidence? No friend. There are just many more lazy people in America than
other countries, excluding the people who can't help their obesity.

I'm not saying that fast food is only around for the money that they bring in,
but that I don't believe that they purposely sell the food they do for the
purpose of "promoting" obesity. But I believe that in this day and age
they are in it more so for the money. I mean back in the day it would be exactly
as you say, but the reason they make such greasy and fatty foods is beacuse they
taste better than a healthy salad or whatever meal you'd choose. That's why they
keep coming out with new things because if they didn't, then other fast food
restraunts would bet more business. I don't think that America is deliberatley
making it hard for people to be healthy, just that America is giving the people
what they want and what they want is to eat food that's good, not nesicarily
healthy, unfortunatley. The same goes for schools, but the schools that I came
form had a variety of food to choose from including fruits and vegetables
without so much of the greasy and fatty foods.
And I find that cars are becoming more of an issue with not only health of
people, but the health of the world.
In all honesty, America does make it hard to be healthy, but in the end it's up
to the person whether or not they want to be healthy. The only reason I started
this threat is because I'm sick of how people treat obese people in America.
Even if it's like dutchforce says and America does "promote" obesity,
they certainly do not accept it as much as other countries. I mean why do you
think all the Victoria's Secret models look like twigs? I can see their ribs for
heaven sakes. Why aren't there over weight people on TV more often? Like on
sitcoms and reality shows? There are always skinny girls with big boobs that
look like their fake. It's because that's what America wants to see. They don't
want to see an overweight woman in lingerie on TV, they want to see a woman with
smooth, marble-like skin that they could probably break in half if they wanted
to.
I'm not trying to offend anyone here, but I strongly believe that America looks
down on its people and encourage perfection too much, so much that America
speaks for them when they say "I need to lose weight." It's like
they're saying it more beacuse that's what this country wants rather than
because it makes them uncomfortable.
So Kage, you say that there are just more lazy people in the US and yet you say
that America looks down on it's people. I find that contradicting. How can a
nation look down on its people when the majority of the people are obese? That
is why I highly disagree with the person who started the thread. If America
really is that judgmental and harsh as you guys are claiming it to be, how come
we have so many fat people? Something isn't right here.... because apparently,
it's not discouraging people from becoming obese.
I say other countries accept obesity even less, just by the fact they have
proportionately less fat people.
And that whole TV argument applies pretty much to the whole world.
Ok, I cant just let this conversation go on like this. I need to say something.
First of all IT IS NOT ABOUT ANY COUNTRY ACCEPTING OR NOT ACCPETING OBESE
PEOPLE. The united states has the highest rate of obesity because its more
common in the U.S. it’s the lifestyle that a country creates, not fast
food chains, tv, or cars. As a country we are the laziest people of all. Our
country has created a lifestyle that hardly requires any work at all anymore.
Obesity was never a problem in this country until recently in the past two
decades. Its because the American lifestyle has changed dramatically. This
country used to be about freedom, liberty and the american dream, THAT EVERYONE
HAD TO WORK FOR. Nowadays, most things are done for us. Which makes it less work
for americans to do. You don’t want to go home and cook for yourself?
Stop by a McDonalds, burger king, wendy’s or taco bell. Don’t
want to walk to work? Take the bus, a car, or a taxi. Don’t want to
write a personal letter and send it THROUGH ACTUAL MAIL? Send it in an email.
Why not? Its easier right? Less work? Of course it is. Our country’s
lifestyle is a lot different compared to other countries. Other countries lead
more active, and healthy lifestyles. Now this may not make sense because your
probably saying that other countries have just as much fast food chains as we do
right? You would be right. But those countries don’t accept fast food as
much as we do. We accept it as a convience, as a easy way out. Other countries
just see it as… being there. The nation doesn’t look down
on the obese, society does, because of how we’ve been brainwashed to
think that being 115 pounds is healthy.
Quote by dutchforceSo Kage, you say

Yes, America does look down on its people. But I don't see how it's
contradicting. Just because obese people make up the majority of the nation does
not mean that the nation itself HAS to like or accept them. The reason we have
so many fat people is as blackbird says. Life in America has been made so easy
that it hardly requires work. But I'm not saying that the entire nation looks
down upon obese people. That would be a foolish statement. It's just the
majority of those who are not obese. And I'm the one who started this threat.
But that's what I'm saying. Society accepts this kind of lifestyle and
reinforces obesity. I read through all the reasons why Americans are obese, so
this means that, in general, people accept obesity. It's a lifestyle we CHOOSE
and ACCEPT, nobody is forced to be fat (except for the people with the bad
genes, but that's a small number). Just think about that. Even though they are
in the minority, plenty of people have healthy lifestyles. Why? It's because
they chose to. I think that society, in general, has accepted obesity. There is
no sense of urgency to stop it, either.
Yes, people will be made fun of for all kinds of reasons and obesity is one of
them. Should that be ok? Not really. But if it really was such a taboo and
looked down upon as much as you make it out to be, it would go away or be less
common.
Society does not accept this kind of lifestyle, and no one chooses to be obese,
it just happens, no one wake up in the morning and decides "Hmm.. today I
think I'll go out and eat and eat and eat." it just happens, and it usually
has to deal with an eating disorder, or mental issues. Nobody is forced to be
fat, thats true. But nobody chooses to be fat either, some people just need
help. Depression, and anxiety can easily lead to an eating disorder which can
lead to obesity. People dont choose those things, they just happen, and the only
thing they can do is admit to themselves that they have a problem and get help.
Society has not accepted obestiy, we've just come to terms with it. And no, no
no, by any means that just because something can be looked down on so much, does
that mean that it will go away or be less common. That is the most ridiculous
thing I've ever heard. Drunk driving and drugs are looked down upon, do you see
those going away? Prostitution is looked down up. Is that less common. No. Just
because something is frowned upon, or "not accepted" does not BY ANY
MEANS, mean that it will be less common.

The stuff you mentioned are crimes. They are illegal activities and that's a
whole different case. Besides, they have been decreasing since the public has
agreed that we do NOT accept them. If they were accepted, they would become
prevalent and eventually become the norm.
I think by not fighting obesity, you are choosing it. If I wanted to stuff
myself and not exercise, I'm choosing to be obese. I might not be saying
"hey, I wanna be fat" but it's more along of the lines "I don't
mind being fat, because apparently I'm not doing anything to stop it".
Coming to terms is accepting. Nobody becomes overweight overnight.
I know I'm trying to make everything look black and white and there are a lot of
exceptions out there (depressions, genetics, etc). But my point isn't whether
it's right or wrong that people look down on others. I don't think that's ever
right, to be honest. I'm just saying that it's not nearly as severe as it is
made out to be. I dare to say that most people don't even give a weird look if
an obese person walked by, because it's so common nowadays.

principal.
Friend, you've got this all wrong. I just noticed. It's not fat people looking
down on fat people. It's skinny and healthy people looking down on fat people.
Although I don't entierly agree with what you're saying. There are fat people
who want to be thin and healthy, but for whatever the reason may be, they can't.
They try, but can't. Some people deticate hard work to doing it, but it becomes
too hard. Obese people are made fun of at schools so much that I've known obese
people to do horrible things to lose weight, such as vomiting constantly so they
can lose weight.
There are some people who accept being fat, but most of the percentage of
society that is not fat does not accept them. And you're right, no one becomes
overweight overnight, but there are certain eating disorders that cause them to
become overweight over time that they cannot control.
Even if someone does not look at an obese person walking down the street, I am
willing to bet everything that I own that that person who sees the obese person
wouldn't want to see them in a modeling magazine, on a sitcom, in the gym,
undressing, on the beach, or in the shower, over a thin, large breasted woman or
a body building man.

I'm not trying to offend anyone here, but I strongly believe that America looks down on its people and encourage perfection too much, so much that America speaks for them when they say "I need to lose weight." It's like they're saying it more beacuse that's what this country wants rather than because it makes them uncomfortable.
So Kage, you say that there are just more lazy people in the US and yet you say that America looks down on it's people. I find that contradicting. How can a nation look down on its people when the majority of the people are obese? That is why I highly disagree with the person who started the thread. If America really is that judgmental and harsh as you guys are claiming it to be, how come we have so many fat people? Something isn't right here.... because apparently, it's not discouraging people from becoming obese.
I say other countries accept obesity even less, just by the fact they have proportionately less fat people.
And that whole TV argument applies pretty much to the whole world.
Ok, I cant just let this conversation go on like this. I need to say something. First of all IT IS NOT ABOUT ANY COUNTRY ACCEPTING OR NOT ACCPETING OBESE PEOPLE. The united states has the highest rate of obesity because its more common in the U.S. it’s the lifestyle that a country creates, not fast food chains, tv, or cars. As a country we are the laziest people of all. Our country has created a lifestyle that hardly requires any work at all anymore. Obesity was never a problem in this country until recently in the past two decades. Its because the American lifestyle has changed dramatically. This country used to be about freedom, liberty and the american dream, THAT EVERYONE HAD TO WORK FOR. Nowadays, most things are done for us. Which makes it less work for americans to do. You don’t want to go home and cook for yourself? Stop by a McDonalds, burger king, wendy’s or taco bell. Don’t want to walk to work? Take the bus, a car, or a taxi. Don’t want to write a personal letter and send it THROUGH ACTUAL MAIL? Send it in an email. Why not? Its easier right? Less work? Of course it is. Our country’s lifestyle is a lot different compared to other countries. Other countries lead more active, and healthy lifestyles. Now this may not make sense because your probably saying that other countries have just as much fast food chains as we do right? You would be right. But those countries don’t accept fast food as much as we do. We accept it as a convience, as a easy way out. Other countries just see it as… being there. The nation doesn’t look down on the obese, society does, because of how we’ve been brainwashed to think that being 115 pounds is healthy.
Yes, America does look down on its people. But I don't see how it's contradicting. Just because obese people make up the majority of the nation does not mean that the nation itself HAS to like or accept them. The reason we have so many fat people is as blackbird says. Life in America has been made so easy that it hardly requires work. But I'm not saying that the entire nation looks down upon obese people. That would be a foolish statement. It's just the majority of those who are not obese. And I'm the one who started this threat.
But that's what I'm saying. Society accepts this kind of lifestyle and reinforces obesity. I read through all the reasons why Americans are obese, so this means that, in general, people accept obesity. It's a lifestyle we CHOOSE and ACCEPT, nobody is forced to be fat (except for the people with the bad genes, but that's a small number). Just think about that. Even though they are in the minority, plenty of people have healthy lifestyles. Why? It's because they chose to. I think that society, in general, has accepted obesity. There is no sense of urgency to stop it, either.
Yes, people will be made fun of for all kinds of reasons and obesity is one of them. Should that be ok? Not really. But if it really was such a taboo and looked down upon as much as you make it out to be, it would go away or be less common.
Society does not accept this kind of lifestyle, and no one chooses to be obese, it just happens, no one wake up in the morning and decides "Hmm.. today I think I'll go out and eat and eat and eat." it just happens, and it usually has to deal with an eating disorder, or mental issues. Nobody is forced to be fat, thats true. But nobody chooses to be fat either, some people just need help. Depression, and anxiety can easily lead to an eating disorder which can lead to obesity. People dont choose those things, they just happen, and the only thing they can do is admit to themselves that they have a problem and get help. Society has not accepted obestiy, we've just come to terms with it. And no, no no, by any means that just because something can be looked down on so much, does that mean that it will go away or be less common. That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Drunk driving and drugs are looked down upon, do you see those going away? Prostitution is looked down up. Is that less common. No. Just because something is frowned upon, or "not accepted" does not BY ANY MEANS, mean that it will be less common.
The stuff you mentioned are crimes. They are illegal activities and that's a whole different case. Besides, they have been decreasing since the public has agreed that we do NOT accept them. If they were accepted, they would become prevalent and eventually become the norm.
I think by not fighting obesity, you are choosing it. If I wanted to stuff myself and not exercise, I'm choosing to be obese. I might not be saying "hey, I wanna be fat" but it's more along of the lines "I don't mind being fat, because apparently I'm not doing anything to stop it". Coming to terms is accepting. Nobody becomes overweight overnight.
I know I'm trying to make everything look black and white and there are a lot of exceptions out there (depressions, genetics, etc). But my point isn't whether it's right or wrong that people look down on others. I don't think that's ever right, to be honest. I'm just saying that it's not nearly as severe as it is made out to be. I dare to say that most people don't even give a weird look if an obese person walked by, because it's so common nowadays.
Just because they are crimes doesn't make it so different. It's the same principal.
Friend, you've got this all wrong. I just noticed. It's not fat people looking down on fat people. It's skinny and healthy people looking down on fat people. Although I don't entierly agree with what you're saying. There are fat people who want to be thin and healthy, but for whatever the reason may be, they can't. They try, but can't. Some people deticate hard work to doing it, but it becomes too hard. Obese people are made fun of at schools so much that I've known obese people to do horrible things to lose weight, such as vomiting constantly so they can lose weight.
There are some people who accept being fat, but most of the percentage of society that is not fat does not accept them. And you're right, no one becomes overweight overnight, but there are certain eating disorders that cause them to become overweight over time that they cannot control.
Even if someone does not look at an obese person walking down the street, I am willing to bet everything that I own that that person who sees the obese person wouldn't want to see them in a modeling magazine, on a sitcom, in the gym, undressing, on the beach, or in the shower, over a thin, large breasted woman or a body building man.
