what makes a good wall?

you know, most of the time i look in the "highlighted submissions" I'm usually quite dissapointed. what do you think makes a good wall, or "god" (copyright jinzhou, lol) wall as call it.

A really good wall needs to have some meaning. The one I have right now is a skeleton on a horse who is looking at a tattered old war flag. It has some meaning, he is old and dead, the war is obviously over. Also try to give everything a purpose, don't put lines to make it look cool, put lines because they accent the main point of the wall. Keep or or two main points, no more, and then accent them as much as you like, then you will have a good wall.

You get dissapointed? How about looking at it now. XD my wall is featured....

Well it depends, some people just look at the cute girl and just fav it.
...some look at the theme of it and look at the overall feel , and some look for perfection and details....and some like walls according to their taste.

For me, a wall with a good theme and was made well is good!

this is what i think of a good wall
1. a good extraction and cleaining of the scan.
2. a concept that works well with the scan.
3. a background that was made amazingly.
4. a wall made with all you heart. a wall made with full of lazyness is out of the picture. a good wall, is which when the author knows there's sumthing wrong with the wallpaper he/she will try everything to repair it.

a good is basically a wall when made you cant comment anything wrong with it. everyone can make that kind of wall. only thing to make a wall like that is patient. so what if ya spent 20 hours with it? if ya wanna make a wall, a week doesnt matter. well for me at least.

I'm disappointed most of the time too. :o I can see the number of friends you have in your list plays a big part in the "highlighted" game. Usually, my wallpapers don't stay long enough on the main page when submitted to be "shown" enough to everyone. After this, I get only comments and favs from my friends' list... not that I'm complaining about that tho. ^_^' Anyway, if I remember well, the minimum of favs required to become highlighted was 30 a couple of weeks ago and now I noticed it got rised to 40 (within 4 days or less). :\

a good wall for me is not necessarily something you spend 146576 hours on it but something which looks good in the end, even if, you have to admit it, you can't do good in 5 minutes. So my points are pretty similar to exentric:
- smooth extraction of an high quality scan/cleaned scan
- high resolution (1280x960 minimum plz)
- coherent background; be it hand-drawn or photo-based
- originality of the concept (I'm still sick of the starky bg+planets+grass+cute girl walls)
- right choice of subject; as far as I'm concerned, except for the Suzuhira girls, I always do wallpapers from series I've watched so that I know what it's about and I actually fit the character with my background. It's always a plus.

But all in all, the right balance isn't that easy to find. I remember Limality's wall of Ongaku Tenshi no Stage (http://gallery.minitokyo.net/view/47551/) which was yet again a spacy background but he just did an amazing edit of the character which is why he got my fav.

*cries in a corner* i just got my wall up there at the "highlighted faves" my first time :O

anyhoo a good wall for me is...good editing, nice colors, great extraction, overall look, and concept, most of this criteria, i try to incorporate in my walls, that tends to make me frustrated all the time when walling >_> and it results in few walls XD

well i ve done that too... and if you care to do so you ll find lots of trash in my favs that i just cant bother to un-fav. but you dont have a reason to care.

...on to the subject.
there is a difference between a good wall and a wall i like to stare at on my desktop. a good wall is one that is both technically great (no extraction flaws, uses impressive techniques, etc) and aesthetically pleasing (either beatiful or with some "meaning" as carsonnt said, even if that means its a bit ugly). scan-background theme coherency is always a bonus but its not that important.
i sometimes also like plain weird stuff. that either has one single jaw-dropping idea or if it gives you a strange feeling as a whole despite its general crappiness.

as for what walls i use? it depends on what mod i m in. nothing stays for long on my desktop. pleasing colors, a cute scan and a theme from the anime i m watching lately. right now i have a wall from My HiME (www.mercurialdesign.net). i havent watched the anime but mai is so cute. and the wall is trendy and orange. :)

A good wall to me is something that you can simply look at and say "yeah"....

I know when I make walls, I toss about 80-90 percent of my ideas and finished products. Sometimes I get so disgusted with my lack of ideas I don't wall that image at all. I'll admit I've done my share of eye-candy crap walls that just appeal to the "cool and now" factor (nothing wrong with that), but I gotta say I really try to make my walls something that people will keep on their desktop for longer than 2-3 days. I don't measure a successful wall by favorites or featuring (which will never happen, due to lack of skills ><;), but by seeing a wall I made reposted somewhere else, by someone that is not me, and people commenting on it, not knowing who the artist is.

It's hard to say what makes a wall have that "yeah" factor, but I know I have made too many that dont ^^

Being able to know how to make one! Bwahahah! lol XD i call any person who can make one an expert XD lol

awwww, tat, your walls are always the best .

I like wp's to show emotion, *I don't like bg's that don't fit the person > you can't just have a crying girl on say a sparkly rainbowy multi-colored bg can you!* high quality is a must and also excellent extraction is required :D I also like to see new ideas and layouts not just stuff people borrow from yesterdays highlighted wallies **lol a really bishi guy helps too :D ** which reminds me why are there so many girlie wp's compared to the amount of guy wps?

I prefer walls that I'd actually use on my desktop. This means no overly bright "oh god my eyes" neon-saturated colors (although I'm fine with white, and sometimes break my own rule depending on what look I'm goinmg for) and overly busy and abstracted backgrounds; this tends to describe the majority of the highlighted submissions. I'm also with Sandy on this one, I'm just not a fan of the current popular style of starscape with planets as the backdrop. I could do it if I really wanted to, but I don't see the point. I prefer to have a theme of some sort in my walls (although I sometimes just go the minimalistic route), even if they do come out simpler looking than the fancy abstracted backdrop ones. In general I prefer characters I know something about, but occasionally a pic strikes me enough that I want to use it regardless. I also try to make sure that the subject of the wallpaper and any important text does not interfere with icon placement or the taskbar; I always overlay a partially transparent copy of my desktop over the image when I'm working on a wall. But in short, if I wouldn't want to use it, I wouldn't make it. This even goes for the ones I've made that I don't care for all that much - I still like using them occasionally. Sadly, it seems that sometimes the ones I like the best are the ones no one else cares about (like my Gaav one) due to my choice of character (Gaav ain't a cute girl, that's for sure). But that's the way it goes. Everybody's taste is different.

- i can't use any words to explain it awww!

A good wallpaper is made of two thinks: quality and originality.
A quality wallpaper with a clean character picture which fits nicely into the bg (colour wise, also with the lightning and doesn't float over the ground) is a good thing, but to make it special, it shouldn't look like everything else.
Some original effects, a well done surrounding (scenery, space, abstract) or even a simple and smooth (or rough, if necessary) design which just happens to match the character is always needed to make your work stand out of the crowd.

I've made some wallpapers that are technically perfect. And I've left them on my hard drive because they lack feeling. That lack of feeling turns them into what I view as a bad wallpaper, so I won't post them.

I've posted one wall that while technically I think it's pretty, I think it's my worst because it lacks any emotion, and is just empty. It's not hard to figure out which it is, but it's more popular than what I consider to be good.

A wonderful wallpaper will be clean and well thought out, but not without feeling. That's what I think is ideal.
