Hi everyone!

For a long time, I loved a very special Anime Character: Rei Ayanami. But time has passed by and I've watched tons of new series, but without a girl that strikes me as she did.
But watching Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu, I became perplexed: The deepness, complexity and charm of Nagato Yuki blew me away.

Is Nagato Yuki the Ayanami Rei of this century? I think she isn't. Their development is quite similar but subtly (or meybe deeply) different, and many other things to consider:

Rei Ayanami: The silent, charming and misterious girl. A true icon. She has some advantage because of the inmeasurable popularity she gained across the years. She is pretty, inteligent and not very talkative. But she shows her emotions and her charm in the right places and moments. Another point to her favor: red eyes and snow white skin. A beautifully designed non-human girl with a very interesting history and a tragic existence.

Nagato Yuki: The silent girl with the breathtaking voice and the answer to every enigma. She may be relatively new in anime (compared with Rei), but she is also extremely popular. Why? She has the looks: little girl, brutally well designed, beautiful in every aspect, and that voice. She has an explanation for almost everything, but doesn't talk too much. She evolves subtly, but nicely. A beautiful girl with a mesmerizing voice, and incredible background and a very melancholic existence.

IMO Rei is and has always been a boring character. People likes her just because she was voiced by Megumi Hayashibara and because of her design. Personality wise she's not original or mold-breaking, even other characters like Ruri from Nadesico are more interesting, because they actually show something and still can be very mysterious chars. Rei... well, not really.

There's no comparison. Yuki has proven to be an awesome character by herself, without needing to hang on the "quiet weird girl" stereotype.

I like yuki more than rei myself.

IMHO Rei will always be the best anime character. Yuki might be SIMILAR but she will never be a rei ayanami. Nothing or no one will ever compare to her. Yuki is also cute but is still like Rei more. Nice try yuki but ur no ayanami!

Rei Ayanami is overrated.

I totally agree. She's popular because of her (lack of) personality. I liked her for a while, but soon realized she wasn't interesting.

But it took sooo long before I found an interesting char. And that's Yuki.

Why, because she's got so much more to offer in coolness.
A dimension manipulating lifeform, COME ON! Who doesn't think that's cool.
Though Rei is a classic quiet girl, I pay attention to a quiet girl's expressionless face and Yuki wins hands down!
Besides, her eyes make her look so nostalgic and adorable.
Go! Go! Yuki.

This was a tough choice for me, because both characters have their good points and their bad points. For me with Rei, she was one of the more tolerable characters in Eva when I first watched it. Let's face it, she's very pretty, and she holds one of the bigger mysteries of the series. But yes, on her own, she's kind of bland and I wouldn't want to watch a show just solely about her.

Then you take Yuki. She's very cool, definitely has that "hug me because I'm cute" look going for her (she's more moe than the token moe character in that series...), and very humorous at times in her unreactive way. Plus, she can talk REALLY fast. But I wouldn't call her the most interesting character in the series. I'm more of a Haruhi and Kyon fan than Yuki's, but I'd probably place her third favorite in the series.

So, for me, it came down to who I enjoyed watching more, and I suppose that would be Yuki. But that could just be because I really enjoyed watching MoHS more than Eva.

But as a question, who here has read Angelic Days? I know a lot of people really, REALLY don't like it, but I actually did enjoy it. And if we're on the subject of Rei, I'd have to say that the Rei from Angelic Days was SOOOOOOO cute! Badly, drawn, but adorable!

I agree with you, but Chihara Minori's voice has nothing to ask for. I find it really relaxing. The design of Rei is cool, but I still prefer Yuki's look.

Yuki, absolutely. She's smart, is knowledgable and still seems to have been living under a rock, which is cute. Rei didn't leave a good first impression with me, bleeding all over the place.

Partly because I haven't seen very much of Evangelion. But mostly because Nagato-san Is way better...
