I too would agree that it depends on the series and how the characters are
portrayed. Sometimes it's not even the hero or the villain that catch my
attention, it's the side characters that really stand out, they are smart,
gracefull, powerfull, "cute" and definitely mysterious, along with a
strong sense of pride, honor and justice. Characters like Hiei, Sesshoumaru,
Byakuya, Twilight Suzuka, Faye Valentine, N. D. Wolfwood just to name a few.
It depends on the character designers. I draw too, you know.
Anyways, Tetsuya Nomura is very notable on creating handsome/beautiful
adversaries (Advent Children, anyone?). So is Yuu Watase (Fushigi
Yuugi).
While the artist of Zenki prefers to draw dimwit-looking foes.
It varies. It differs. Yet it's common.
Really, I've seen enough that I find it difficult to make generalizations. It's
already been noted that villians are often more mature looking, while heroes
tend to be more on the cute side, but there's so much overlap that it goes both
ways. In the end, I have to draw it down to the individual character, not just
because of this, but because I factor in personality as well.
I must say that in whichever anime i'm currently hooked what draw me was a scan
or a pic of a character and its usually the villain or the bad-tempered one of
the good guys...or such......tell the truth i can recognise the bad characters
'cos they are the ones that draw me....so i'll go with VILLAIN

It depend on what anime they show, some others villains more attractive and some
others protagonist are more attractive and others both protagonist and
antagonist!
Huh... thinking back to all the series I've read/seen.. for some reason I
preferred the villians. O_O I don't know why. Perhaps because they were a bit
mysterious and untouchable, hehe. ^^;
I noticesed Villians can be very very attractive i mean their so evil but yet so
breath taking sometimes!~ I've seen many many villians taking my breath away!

But then Hero are very very beautiful or handsome and such!~
Like a lot of people said, villians can tend to be extremely beautiful (usually
much more vain and utilizing much more sexual appeal), but you do see very
beautiful and appealing heros too. All time favorites; Wicked Lady (Sailormoon)
and Lacus Clyne.
Usually the villain have better look than the main character. I don't know if
Sesshomaru count as villain, but he is definitily far more cool than his
brother. If you talk about game, then you must know I want to play as Sephiroth
in FF VII.
Naruto = hero = not exceptionally good looking, cute
Kakashi = hero = that man is one of the hottest anime characters ever
created
Orochimaru = villan = there are not enough adjectives in the world to describe
how ugly he is.
Itachi = presumed villan = step below Kakashi regarding level of
hotness.
I don't think you can apply the all or nothing rule to this question, it just
depends on the show.

Hmm... even though heroes are more widely favored, I prefer villains - they always seem to have so much fun doing what they do

I seem to know more about games than shows, and find zelda to be pretty cute, she's a protagonist.

depends, it could be both, but some times the hero is sooo uhmmm irritating that you end choosing the villian
