What do you guys think is the biggest obstacle when trying to introduce a newbie
into appreciating anime? Is it the whole "foreigness" of the animation
thing, the long search for just the right show to kick in the interest, or
trying to break away their false, preconcived notions of anime (that it's
nothing but violence, porn, etc.).
I've tried to introduce a few friends to anime, but the common feedback is
usually for the "weirdness" of style. It's fair to say that if it's
the first time actually getting into it, but it's a different thing to say it
and not watch it because of it (big eyes is not a good excuse for missing a good
story, for example).
And oftentimes, it's finding the right, first series to go around the style
issue that makes it difficult for them to seriously consider anime.
I often find that when trying to introduce anime to someone who's only familiar
with children's cartoons, they will already be biased without even having
watched any shows. They assume anime is either little kid, toy-based
entertainment (i.e. Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh), or it's pornographic trash with
nothing but big breasted women and strange tentacles everywhere . If I'm
trying to introduce anime to a friend, I'll usually stick with something that
appeals to American audiences, like Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Black
Lagoon, or Samurai Champloo. After watching shows like these they're more
willing to give anime in general a chance.
Assuming ur friend likes american drama/movie, his probably not going to like
anime. One is real and the other is fake.
Its just not used to it. There's also several types of character design. Pick
one that he should like. Gunslinger girl ftw. lol. or lucky star/minami ke.
(kewt xD)
Some of them can't be bothered to try either. Most of friends think anime is all
about big boobs and nice ass. Most anime that has those never make it to top 30
spots.
Some of the first reactions I get when I mention anime is that it's all porn, or
about the big eyes.
Best way would be to ease them in with something similar to what they like
already.
my mother tried watching it with me and she couldn't get into the
"2-d" of it so maybe that could be a start, and I've learned just
because it's your favorite doesn't make it theirs...it's best to find out what
type of "live action" the person likes and then try to find anime in
that general location

CONVO IZ...................... WHAT EXSAKLY
Um, the point here is asking what kind of experiences someone would have if they
tried to get a friend or someone into anime.
I mean, when you actually have the opportunity to introduce someone into anime
("converting" them as some of said), then you'll have to consider what
happens if it doesn't work out well.
elfenlied and bleach got me hooked, seen over 80 series now, and i consider
myself picky, so it wont matter much what type of anime you go for i think some
people like it and some just cant understand it.
You basically have to find something that will perk
their interest or that they wouldn't mine watching.Considering that my mom would
watch cartoons right along with me and my brothers depending on what she like,it
wasn't much of a hassle for her to get into anime since she thinks is pretty
much the same thing, just in a different style and different place.Plus it can be
rather engaging if it's a good story.
My mom started off watching stuff like DBZ and
Pokemon even though I've been watching quite abit of anime since I was like 5
(sucks that the Sci-Fi channel doesn't show it anymore). Then when anime started
to gaining more popularity and fan frame from channels like Cartoon Network, she
would watch anime like Samurai Champloo and Full Metal Alchemist not just
because of the more mature themes but because of how interesting the stories and
characters were.
Basically,it comes down to interests,appeal,and
acceptance.Probably in time something will get the attention of your friends or
family and they can slowly but surely get into anime more.
Usually the biggest hurdle here in the US is getting them over the animation
hurdle since most people here view animated shows as for kids and not adults.
I would start them off on some popular shonen, like Bleach or Naruto. Because
whether your a guy or a girl they can appeal to any aspect. And if their more
into romance stuff, after they've watched for a little bit, show them Fanfics.
fact thats its a cartoon will turn them off.... xP its kinda hard... but usually
i find that foreigners or people who aren't used to it would like seinen
stuff..... more mature stuff.... like say.... darker than black

Generally i just try and go with the genre's they like in general with movies and TV shows and go from there.
I started off with action and comedy stuff as that's my main thing.
Though really it's only worth bothering if they have some interest in it otherwise there really isn't any point trying to "convert" someone

Or just blow it off if it isn't worth trying.
You sir, are a genius. Thank you for your insight.

They think cartoons and anime are the same thing so they assume both are as childish!
Ohh! It ain't easy to convince anyone.
