The one thing that American cartoons (such as Simpsons, Family Guy, etc.) don't
have is character development. It's pretty hard to find a good anime series that
doesn't have character development; that's what anime's all about! So sometimes,
after watching certain American cartoons, I feel a little empty...if the
character's don't change throughout the series, how am I supposed to care for
and develop an attachment to them?
Anime i way ahead from american cartoons, it just has MUCH more value, and you
can se what happens when americans try to import or remake anime or japanse
games as anime... sucks
American cartoons>>>>>>>x100 anime.
Though I admit that a lot of american cartoons do suck ,the fact is, a hell of a
lot of anime suck as well. Most of the plotlines are dull, the characters follow
the same general palette, and the animation is (dare i say it?) always the same,
and, personally, I find the style rather overdone. On the other hand, most
american cartoons (though, not ones that have been made within the past few
years) don't fall under a single style, meaning that most creators and animators
have to be far more creative, and often create far more interesting animation
styles. And how can one say american cartoons lack character development? I find
myself rather attached to classics like Homer Simpson and Scooby Doo. Like I
said, most of the recent american cartoons are pretty crappy, but the, at least,
minimally decent ones outshine 90% of most animes.
I'll probably get killed for this, but---
Shows like South Park, The Simpsons, Invader Zim and Scooby Doo will always be
above anime. Mind you, this is coming from a former anime fan.
Easy.
Anime has things like a plot, characters, and doesn't usually continue after the
story is over. A large number also require you to make an effort to use your
brain.
American cartoons lack a plot, the characters are at best two-dimensional and
often have even less thought put into them, and they lack any depth whatsoever.
They are more about point and laugh, than deep thought.
Actually now I understand why a large number of people claim anime is bad, it's
because they don't like the fact that something like Jin-roh will require them
to actually think.
I find more reality in Animes than American Cartoons. They're both entertaining
but in very different ways. I merely watch Cartoons for sake of fun and a good
laugh. That's all. Cartoons encompass all good things and happily-ever-afters.
Something that in an adult's mind cannot be accepted entirely. Kids see the
world from purer angle, and that's how far cartoons extent. Anime's contain both
this purity and innocence, and life's reality and brutality. They're more real
and tangible to an adult's view. That's why animes hardly lose their fans unlike
cartoons. Animes cover vast age range. You can find anything among them
according to your age and taste.
A year after posting on this thread... I feel the need to defend American uh...
entertainment art. Not really animation in particular.
Anime is so... generic. American animation is also generic. There's good ones in
both, and it's too hard to say which is really better due to cultural
differences, style, and personal preferences. Really, all this talk is
subjective. There's probably someone out there that prefers Superman 64 to
Ocarina of Time or something.
I mean, take comics. Calvin and Hobbes is a newspaper strip, yet it's definitely
quality work. The friendship between the two titular characters is so touching
and I've felt more emotion from that than any anime ever.
If any of you have ever read Flight, it's probably the greatest collection of
comics ever, deeply imaginative with richly detailed art. Talent isn't
completely empty stateside, y'know?
Anime will always be better the american animation. because unlike american
cartoons anime, has to make sense ya know unless it parody or something really
out of the ordinary like FLCL but with deeper storylines characters that are
easy to relate to and situations boarderling real-life situations Anime will
always be the best. and with the way american cartoons are shaping up now no
wonder most people my age don't wacth any of the new stuff. the animation now is
just crappy and jokes have no real common sense. personally american cartoon to
me hit there peck in the 80's to early 2000's and even then i was still watch
anime more anyway.
Anime is better because it follows an actual story line. Cartoons, like the
Simpsons, are just a bunch of episodes with the same people but no continuing
plot. Anime has much better development of characters and they look much better
too.
That's a ridiculously over-generalized statement. Both sides have their share of
excellent to garbage shows and trying to pin-point one as being better than the
other overlooks that fact. It's kinda like saying all Japanese people are same
and all Americans are the same. It doesn't work that way, and there isn't a
universal system that makes all "anime" the same or all American
animation the same. It just ends up comparing stereotypes.
Anime tend to have more "efforct" put in that is actually shown, such
as the graphics, storyline, characters, etc. For some reason, the cartoons never
interests me in contrast of anime...
Most America cartoons I do not like. They can be funny sometimes but there are
no story to them. They just keep going...which is so boring. Anime rox because
they usually have great story lines (well everyone I watched does).
Well, instead of usually random episodes, the anime usually follows a story all
the way through, and at times, that's a really good thing, instead of watching
stupid reality T.V. like One Tree Hill, and The Real World.
Like a lot of people have said, American cartoons are viewed much differantly
than anime is. In America, cartoons are almost always for kids or comedy. They
are almost never serious, nor are they taken vary seriously. The US is also
currently getting away from traditional 2-D animation in favor of cheaper 3-D
animation. Nothing against 3-D, but I personally like my cartoons to be 2-D.
Quote by DilandauWell I prefer anime
since I can relate to it, the bad guys arent all evil but they also have traits
that you can relate too. Same goes with the good guys they arent all goodie
goodie but also have their bad sides... They are human all humans have their
good and bad sides they don't hide that fact in animes.
dilandu has apoint anime is just more expressional than us.cartoons.. our anime
characters scream fight kiss cheat get confused..in all they live life..and i
think thats what us,toons are missing to capture us viewers by makin the
characters more realistic...
i am surprised someone actually asked this question.. comparing anime to
american cartoons is like comparing an eclaire to a badly done doughnut.. anime
is just sooo flexible and it appears on the japanese know how to manipulate
it..americans make terrible attempts at making anime some of them are just badly
drawn with poor storylines...but the japs keep surprising us over and over again
all in all anime is SOOOOOOO GOOOD that we treat the characters like human
beings... didnt we cry when tomoe died in kenshin? and dont we feel for kaoru ?
and all the others?
i agree with justinus.japanese animes may have one drawback that is similarity
of painting(for most non animefan ppl all the chars look same)but there is such
a vareity of theme, characterization, plot which american anime lacks.u can have
funs from both of them, but anime has more emotional appeal.

American cartoons have the lamest kind of animation. Its really amateur work to me.

I say Japanese anime is more better because of the voices that match the character. When the anime get dubbed, it ruins the whole thing imo.
Easy.

Japanese anime is better because the voices are better and more (Honki) ^^"
but the cartoons always go and end with good end!

Agreed! Both genres have something to bring to the table. Though I have a personal preference, there are some anime that I still enjoy.
It is a rather pointless debate, I'll agree....
anime is much better simply because........their art was so amazing
and it's "animation" is realistic....... unlike american cartoons...
but....american cartoons makes me laugh a lot! (the comedy one) ^^
Anime tend to have more "efforct" put in that is actually shown, such as the graphics, storyline, characters, etc. For some reason, the cartoons never interests me in contrast of anime...

in anime the characters are not have a story line that how is bad or how is good, the roles can change during the story

anime isnt better, they are equal
i think its better cuz the English version always leaves things out!

agreed.
