I recently just found out that the anime magazine known as Newtype USA which I had subscribed to less than a year ago, was being terminated. I do not think I need to mention to all of you just how distraught I was upon hearing this news. This might sound very childish but I looked forward to getting that magazine, it was like receiving a present every month, even though I was the one who technically sent and paid for it. I spent months trying to find the right magazine to subscribe to and then convince my mother to let me do so; and now it's all over. I still had five months left on my subscription which really sucked. Even though now a new mag has popped up under the name PiQ and is sending me 10 issues to make up for the 5 I had lost with Newtype USA, it does not even come close to the grandeur and awesomeness of the previous mag. And I'm not just being sentimental and sulky, Newtype USA was incredible. I have never seen anything like it before. What kills me the most is that I know I'll probably never be able to replace it. But I'll ask you guys anyways if there are any other anime magazines that you would recommend. (I do still need to stay updated.)

If you too were a previous subscriber of Newtype USA and are saddened by the news, feel free to tell me about it.

Why'd the magazine get terminated?

They actually never mention why. It's all very vague. If you want you can read what they wrote on http://www.newtype-usa.com/.

I know, Gosh! It really sucks I just found out too. I can't believe it's gone: the posters, the reviews, the comments, the show and game updates, the cosplay, the fan art, the Kobato manga insert and oh the DVDs! It was awesome, I truly feel your pain.(sob, sob :( )
It was the best Magazine I've ever read...really the best. No other Magazine can replace it so I won't even try.

I was a subscriber for about 2 years from issue #1. I was infatuated with all the pretty pictures and whatnot and couldn't get enough. Eventually I stopped subscribing because I was essentially paying like $80 a month for pictures and scant extras. The magazine was doomed from the get go. I mean most subscriptions are in the $20 range, and this one just destroyed that figure and only attracted a niche crowd.

Newtype was all in all an ok magazine. It had lots of pictures, but very little in the way of meat. You got a poster, but geez something like Megami you get like 10 a month and sometimes other goodies for nearly the same price.

It's true it had alot of pretty pictures and stuff, but it was more than that, I really liked reading their articles too. I thought they did a pretty good job of keeping the readers updated on the latest stuff. And of course the layout of the magazine was really cool and different. It's true that it was a very pricey magazine, though in the end I felt it was worth it, but the staff of NTUSA claim that the price of the subscriptions was not one of the reasons for it's shut down.

I used to buy the magazine all the time and was hoping to subscribe to it soon, but guess I'll not get the chance. So guess that means I gotta ask this what are good anime magazines that give anything like Newtype USA did?

They may say the price point isn't an issue for the shut down, but it's partially true. The biggest factor is the reconcilliation going on in the American anime industry. Geneon died off last year and since then ADV (who publishes Newtype) has been on shaky ground. ADV went on an anime licensing blitz around 03-04 and just kept on trucking after that. Much of what they have licensed hasn't even come out yet, and with anime as a dying form in American (for purchase at least) ADV had to find ways to shave off excess baggage. Since NTUSA wasn't producing profit, it was best to kill it off and funnel their efforts elsewhere.

NTUSA had the unfortunate fate of being attached to ADV. If it were independantly brought out here, much more attention could be paid to it. But agian, they had to shave off excess waste and NTUSA got the ax. Hell, a lot of anime companies now are just saying screw English dubs because they are too expensive to produce and cut into the bottom line. Why do you think you are seeing 13 episode sets come out now for $50 and less? Didn't 3 eps used to cost $30 retail? Geneon, NTUSA... it's going downhill fast kiddies.

This is pretty sad news for me, even though I didn't read the magazine regularly. This new PiQ isn't even worth reading, it's like a really big TV guide or something. Ah well, there are still other anime magazines out there, I guess.

Quote by Bubbachibi18It was the best Magazine I've ever read...really the best.

A few years ago, I had a subscription to Newtype USA, and -- aside from the fact that I never received two of the issues I paid for -- I found it largely disappointing. Besides having features that were consistently out of date by the time of publication, the balance between content and fluff was, as shoujoboy noted, skewed heavily towards the fluff.

Of particular irritation to me was the fact that I could get a single issue of the Japanese version of Newtype -- which had considerably more content and was far more timely in its reporting -- for far less than the price of a single issue of Newtype USA. Furthermore, the extras included with the Japanese magazine were far, far superior to those provided with its stateside incarnation. In place of a preview DVD with single episodes of shows I couldn't care less about, there were really nice extras. Some issues came with nice shitajiki, and one that stands out in my mind came with a 1:144 scale model kit of an Impulse Gundam from GSD.

In short, Newtype was essentially little more than a absurdly overpriced glossy picture book issued in monthly installments. With more timely news or more impressive extras, it may have been worth getting. As such, it was easy for me to decide not to renew my subscription after the year was up.
