'Losing yourself' in anime

How easy is it for you to lose yourself in the fantasy of an anime? Will you typically watch a 30-minute episode and immediately let go of the experience after finishing it, or do you treasure it even after watching it?

Anime is the most accessible form of escapism for me, and i would always find myself "taking in" the viewing experience whenever I watch a really good series. For instance, shows like Aria and Air have stories and settings that are so unique and vivid that it's hard not to lose myself in the fantasy of them. And so many times I would find myself attached to the characters in anime: Whether they die, fall in love, or learn some lesson about their lives, fictional characters in anime still manage to impact me emotionally.

Not sure if this makes me crazy or just someone totally bored out of his mind... ^_^'

It really all depends on the show I'm watching. If it really involves me and is deep enough to be engrossing then I absolutely agree. Things like comedies or those episodic monsters like Dragonball Z where very little happens, then no. Putting your mind into that fantasy world is what anime does best, and aims to do. The more you become a part of the anime, the more likely you are to buy things related to it.

My biggest thing is when I finish a really good show that was so involving that it now kinda feels bad that it's over. That empty feeling of "wow that was great... but there's no more". That feeling I could do without.

For me, anime is really just a hobby for me. I like it and I enjoy watching it. I remember certain episodes of so-and-so series because they make me feel so engrossed into the character's feelings and emotions. Certain series really do have amazing worlds that are very similar or very different from our own world. They let you in so much that you start to feel attached.

Yeah, I agree with shoujoboy on the feeling about the endings of a series. But I'm okay with them ending, as long as they give me an ending that satisfy me and ties up loose ends.

i watch the first couple of episodes
and if i like it then i start to get into it.

its real easy for me to lose myself in anime, i wish real life was anime! i think that would be cool!

I enjoy getting into what I'm watching, but whether they happens is entirely contingent upon whether I deem the show to be of high quality.

Its easy to engross yourself in a good story or book. So I'd say that its also easy to do the same with an anime or manga. You get swept up in the story (of which some stories can be so amazing that you can daydream/fantasize yourself experiencing the plot with the characters). Because of this, I believe some people are prone to be infactuated with some characters of the story or be enthralled with the concepts of the plot itself so much that it may influence their lives a bit.

I enjoy watching anime. If I watch a good anime late at night I sometimes have interesting/vivid dreams involving the same storyline, plot, or characters. ^^ I can sometimes lose myself in a book, so I have the same tendancy with some manga/novels too. I see no problem with this as it doesn't affect my life in an outward way. My dreams are one thing, but my real life is completely off limits to fantasy. That's kids stuff and pretend games.

Anyways, I think its easy for someone to get into an anime so much that they can "lose themselves" in a sense... but there's nothing wrong with it as long as it doesn't influence their personal lives.

Here's some examples below of why you shouldn't completely lose yourself in anime/manga.

(Examples: Death Note, Jigoku Shoujo)
Don't start believing that this is real or that you are the character... stuff like that is potentially dangerous to yourself and society. o_0

(Examples: DBZ, InuYasha)
If you suddenly get the urge to try to go SSJ4... well, feel free to it... but I'm sure you can't fly... and you're likely to burst a blood vessel. -_-
Or, if you feel like you're the reincarnated guardian of a sacred jewel... you start shooting mutant animals (demons) with a bow, don't blame me for being incarcerated for animal cruelty. <_<

When I was little, I'd be incredibly immersed in the fantasy of it, using my youthful imagination and all that. I'd play that I had some sort of magical power and would move around as if I were like Sailor Moon or something.

But now, not so much, heh. I've grown out of it and merely appreciate it for what it is: fantasy. I get super squealy and excited about romance though, lol, it's kinda sad ^^

There was actually a guy in my school years ago who thought he was Goku. So much so, people actually started to call him that. He would walk around with his chest puffed out and his arms out like he was trying really hard to be buff. He wore DBZ shirts everyday (cause I guess as Goku he needed to self-promote). And I kid you not, while waiting at the bus stop one day, someone asked him to summon a spirit bomb. He stood there with his hands in the air for like 10 minutes.

I have 2 friends and they verry like anime, they watch, read all manga and anime in my country. One girls still normal, but one girls didn't still normal, she do excactly what people in anime did. I think she just like the character of person in manga and they think that character is theirs. But she is growing up, she have her situation, her life, so that, she can find what chacrater she have..

well it depends on the anime in question...if it's an anime that I like then I will ponder over it for a bit and wait patiently for the next chapter (next dvd, movie, etc) but it's an anime I don't like I actually start kicking myself because I literally wasted x time frame to watch it ^_^ but for me anime is means of escaping and when I feel depressed I watch anime with sadness, sorrow, etc to show me that I don't have it as bad as I think I do
