An overly-generalized statement. Granted it does have merit, but don't dismiss
the cartoons just yet. For every south park and family guy, there is also Avatar
and Batman: The Animated Series . (read B:aTS, not The Batman) It is also the
same with anime, there are hit and misses in that spectrum as well. Though no
matter how it boils down, this is simply a clash between styles of
animation.
It's just like the movies: some are of better quality than others, but it's
still all in the same big picture. Some even are inspired by older works (GitS
--> The Matrix, Disney --> Tezuka, B:tAS --> Big O.), though I suppose
that's not really the issue here. Bottom line, it all comes down to a matter of
taste and opinion. Do not deprive yourself of one particular style just because
you prefer another. You never know what kind of treasures you might find amongst
the refuse.
True, some American made cartoons are quite good, and certainly not all anime is
even worth watching.
In general, I would say that I prefer anime because the plotlines tend to be
more interesting and well thought out, the characters more complex and human.
There also tends to be more variety in subject matter, and it is often unaffraid
to touch on sensitive subject matter, which gives many animes layers of depth
lacking in western made cartoons. I also usually fine the typical anime style of
animation more attractive.
Of course, this is a generalization; it certainly doesn't apply to all anime or
all cartoons, and personal taste plays a big part as well.
I'm happy to see that some folks have provided a more thought out argument than
what I generally see generated by this kind of a topic.
I don't think that we should particularly say that one is better than the other
because one only has to look a little ways to see that both are flooded with the
mediocre and copy-cat series, while only the true gems stand out.
And though I've seen some of the folks here commenting about Disney's lack of
advancement toward a more adult audience, I can't say I agree. I'm rather happy
that, at least in their theatrical productions, they've kept a lighter, more
innocent theme. I think there's a different kind of mature audience that would
like to continue going to a movie just to admire the art and enjoy the story
meant for a more generalized demographic. I'm not ashamed to say I still go to G
and PG movies and enjoy them, a lot of times, more so than those animated
productions made for so-called "mature" audiences only, be they of
Japanese or American origin.
I do have to admit that while I'm not fond of such cartoons as
"Spongebob," "Southpark," "Ed, Edd, and Eddy," and
the like, I have been rather impressed by Avatar, Teen Titans (as silly as that
may sound), and some of the other more plot-centered American-made cartoons out
there. T'is true that the Japanese have opened our eyes and showed us that
cartoons can be more than just for kids, and with that, I think American
cartoons have gotten better. I think the concept of a running plot throughout a
series has given American cartoons another level to develop from. I also think
that as this audience generation gets older, we'll see more American cartoons
made for older audiences that have comparatively creative story lines and
artwork.
lol, the definition of anime is japanese cartoon. That just how they say cartoon
in japan. So the phrase 'japanese anime' cracks me up. xDDD
Anyway, anime has way more appealing styles in art. Americans.. they don't spend
much time and quality on the animation to be honest. Also, yeah, the storys and
plots are way better. Anime has more real life emotions while America is all..
guns, sex, drugs, blah blah blah. Also, have you ever seen American humor? It's
horrible! It's all fart jokes and mean jokes like that. xDD
japanese anime characters wear better costumes compared to american cartoon
characters especially super heroes. no one in a team acts like a king by wearing
a red cape or bringing his assistant and most of them have a very buffed body.
in anime, not-so-buffed guys are still attractive and popular
I haven't watched American cartoons since I was kid. I really stopped watching
cartoons years ago and only about 6 months ago I've discovered anime.
I'd say anime is much better. The action the fight the dialogue if I recall the
dialouge in American cartoons would be like I'm gonna kick your ass (ok not the
actual phrase but trying to give you and idea.. even if it sucked lol...) blabh
no real tension when they fight and talk. I was kinda blown away when I first
watched Bleach the fight between Byakukya and Ichi... they fought and talk it
wasn't like regular meaning less fight talk talk.. Also storyline and character
design it has more deph. And not all anime are kiddie so adults can watch it
too.
I can't think of a cartoon out now in the U.S that I'd consider wasting my time
on. Not that I bothered to even look. A few years ago I liked X-Men and Batman
but still kinda kiddie to me so I rather watch Bleach I adore the characters in
it like they were real. I even try to read the manga.
History , direction, animation, music, almost in everithing

anime so much better than american cartoon.i just think american cartoon has
many ridiculous story.Besides anime has better art style than american cartoon
To me it comes down to one simple fact. In 90% of the cases, American cartoons,
whether children cartoons or more "mature" cartoons, have little to no
internal continuity. What I mean is that you can have one episode and there is
no guarantee the events will be related to anything that happened in an earlier
one. Most American cartoons seem to be like a series of half hour OVAs. However,
Japanese Anime is more like American primetime, non-reality t.v programming, but
with moer enjoyable stories. Anime, even the comedies, usually have an internal
story line that each episode builds towards. The artwork between mediums is not
a big concern to me. There is no doubt a lot of anime have very beautiful scenes
and character designs, but some very good anime have similar animation stylees
to some decent cartoons. Sorry to say as an American, but there's no way that
I'd pick any American cartoon over an anime; anime are a different creature and
just too good. It's a shame more Americans can't see that anime aren't the same
as cartoons.
Well, I just absolutely love the way it looks! It's like watching a drama but it
can be even more amazing in different ways. And there's so many different plots
that can be portrayed. American cartoons tend to only be for mild entertainment
or comedy. And the ones that are aimed at older age groups tend to be retarded
some times in my opinion.
Avatar is one of the few exceptions I can think of though. ^^
It's pretty simple. American Cartoons nowadays tend to focus on basic slapstick
humor, while Anime is more of a medium for any and all types of stories, humor
included. While I suppose there are some nicer cartoons, like Justice League.
:-) But overall, my mind has been numbed by all the kiddie and comedy toons out
there today. Yeah, Anime is just better. The graphics are the best!
I think they're different. Mostly in humor and I think it depends how you entertain yourself. Like me if its funny then I'll watch it. Simple. ;D
I would say because of the art and more are focused toward young adults
plot and animation styles are definitly the main 2 points
also japanese anime have plots that are for those beyond 8

My opinion on this is that,Japanese anime is art.
And American cartoons are just cartoons.
No doubt, Anime is much better than American cartoons.
Anime has better chara design and better story.
anime and manga looks so much better than the american stuff
