I picked subbed for a couple of reasons:
- with few exceptions, voice actors who do the dubbing don't have the right
voices and sometimes change a character's personality completely;
- Japanese voice actors really bring characters to life, dub voices usually
sound cartoonish
- it's a good way to learn the language
I like to watch Romanian dubs though, they sound a lot better than American
ones. However, there's nothing like the original language
I'm not too critical of dubbed voices unless I can actually think of a better
choice for the voice. I watch both without caring, but I have to watch a series
in one language, I can't switch in between.
I mostly go with dubs, simply because I prefer to listen to a language I can
understand. Besides, most dubs nowadays are almost as good as the original voice
acting anyway.
I prefer sub at any time, dubbed version are horrible now at days (i can count
on fingers how many good dub's i've heard)

with the romanian dub's ^_^ )
Even though I am a student of the Japanese language, I still find myself to be
preferring to watch anime dubbed. I'll watch the subs every now and then just so
I can practice my listening comprehension, but dubs are still the most enjoyable
method to watch anime for me (I can say that easily since the English
voice-acting just keeps getting better and better with each new series).
the only dubbed anime that i think is not too bad is samurai x.
overall, i still prefer subbed because..
1) it doesn't feel like i'm watching anime if it's not in japanese..
2) i'm a seiyuu (voice actor) fan and i find it fun to try identifying the more
unique voices from listening in the anime
3) i'm learning japanese, so i can catch at least 50% of the content from
listening
4) the japanese seiyuus are really good
definitely subbed. If there are two versions, you should always watch the dubbed
version first (only if u wanna watch both). If you watch the subbed version
first, you will have little motivation to watch the dubbed version.
I think subbed is better because:
1. it sounds natural, many dubbed animes sound fake. The voice just doesn't fit
the characters!
2. sometimes the term is changed and you miss out on japanese puns
If I had the choice, I'd take subbed over dubbed anytime - you get the sense of
the characters and what have you as originally created (through the voices of
the characters... ie. dub Rukia in Bleach sounds horrible imo).
But then again, quality of subs also matter - I really like how groups sub stuff
online; I'd like it if more anime was subbed like that (you know, with helpful
tidbits and trivia popping up every now and then) - but in reality that probably
won't happen (I don't see any DVDs released with hard subbing, do you? )
However - some dubs do work really well. Best example (probably the only one
that comes in mind for me) is the dub of Dragonball Z.. that was some nice work.
Dubs not as good as they used to be? I dare anyone saying so to go to this site, watch ALL
THREE "Bad American Dubbing" features and THEN come back and bitch
about it. And that's not even including the British dubs/swearfests that was
slapped on various UK releases back in my VHS buying days.
As for learning Japanese from anime.... if you honestly meant SOLELY from
watching anime as a replacement for having to take language courses in school or
something similar, then that's the kind of reasoning that sends me to the floor,
howling with laughter. Yeah, I wonder if I should try convincing people that I
learned English by watching Hollywood movies and really, really listening. I
mean... sure, reading stuff, writing and generally listening to English in
various types of media has been a great help, but seriously...

I have to agree with NORTHY'S comment. you will never get the full enjoyment of
some anime watching and reading subtitles. without american-izations in
characters voices(no matter how bad the voice acting) you just don't get the
full enjoyment.
Japanese voice acting no matter how they are acclaimed are dull and lack
personality by our media blasted western standards.
Learning the language for the reason of watching better cartoons is ridiculous
to me. of course, these kind will claim they wanna learn more about the culture
n stuff, they are full of it. They have no other ambition but to have something
over their piers to input on the topic! granted somethings will never be
understood on a western level perspective from an original Japanese story
dialect, but really Its not that Important to be wasting your time and resources
learning it unless your in the business and plan going to Tokyo.
I agree with camus08, i prefer whatever i heard first,but for the most part i
just cant follow along the subs and the japanese voice actors sound too much
alike to one another.thats just my opinion.however i agree that it is a very
good way to learn language such as japanese

just wondering, when you watch an anime...would you prefer it to be dubbed in english (or any other language that you understand), or subbed?
personally, i much prefer an anime to be subbed than it is dubbed! listening to the original audio is so much better in my opinion!

the actors that do the voices in japanese are actually famous and stuff, dubs are usually bad people due to the lack of popularity

i prefer subbed because the english dubbed ones makes the characters sound really weird. only anime i like in dubbed is Inuyasha.
Subbed. Mainly because the dubbed versions give me a different impression of a character. Not in a good way either... With a few exceptions.

Subbed, preferably not by an American company, with very, very few exceptions such as Cowboy Bebop.
