All right basically I just wanna see what you guys think about Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter.

To be honest Im not sayin one is BETTER than the other...but I've found that if youre in to one youre usually also in to the other.

Did you like the movies? Did you like the books? Can you even compare the two or are they each brilliant (or crap) in their own way? In a fight between Gandalf and Dumbledore who would win? etc etc

Just let me know what you think!

ahhhh both were good movies and i never read the books Harry potter was awsome and so was the lord of the rings, but if i had to pick one i would pick Lord of the rings casue middle earth is just really awsome

theyre very different to be compared, in lotr, magic is just another feature of a deep based story, very complex timeliene, if you consider the silamrilion and the hobbit.
i like this most.

in HP magic is the main character, everything goes around it.
it puts it at reach of common people, (well, almost) and its used in eveyday life rather than a mystical power, who just a few can understand.

each has his ups and downs, but they cant be compared as they dont have the same goal. they're as different as the people who wrote them.

(i personally like epic stuff so i stick to LOTR if i had to chose)

That's actually a really hard choice...they're both fantastic sagas, but i think they're great for different reasons.
I read both of the book series and have seen all of the movies: each time I try to compare them, they just keep weighing out the same. The books were both great but the movies were good too, even though they left out a lot.
Gandalf and Dumbledore, eh? Doesn't it seem like Rowling could have taken the idea for Dumbledore from Gandalf (and Gandalf comes from Merlin??)? Oh well, I'd have to say that Gandalf would win, because he's older, and bigger and better (and we actually saw him take out that balrog in the 1st and 2nd movies).

I like genre fantasy less and less as time goes on. Even though LOTR was the very first, it's hard for me to get interested in it, wheras Harry potter is very different and in my opinion more interesting because its modern, etc. but with things like this, I like books better.

Hmmm.... I would have to say that I don't love one more than the other because both are awesome stories, though they are specifically for different age groups. LOTR was written for adults to enjoy and encompasses a few entirely different cultures and a language that Tolkien himself created. While Harry Potter is written for the enjoyment of children, though it is also enjoyable to adults. The entire world of Harry Potter is considerably smaller, but is slowly growing as Rowlings' books come out.

Now the movies are an entire different thing. The LOTR was fast moving, action packed and a great representation of the books. The movies brought the books to life for a generation that wasn't all that interested in lotr, while appealing to adults who were (and still are) major fans of them. Harry Potter on the other hand has grown from the movies.... the books were popular enough, but the movies have really brought the books alive, hooking people into wanting to see the next movie and buying all the books.

I loved both movies, but, Lord of the Rings win hands down! The actors are just better, well, considering the other cast are mostly kids.

In Harry Potter, Harry has only one surprised and angry expression. Ron only had one scared expression. Hermione only had one expression too.

Lord of the Rings had a really, really good cast! And its story is just more appealing to me. This movie was also shot on a bigger scale, spending a lot more money to make everything just perfect.

I read both books, and J.R.R.Tolkien is just a better writer..............

Ahh, I agree with Aerith. :) Though Froddo largely only had one facial setting, too, I can't quite imagine the movie any other way. XD

And I prefer Tolkien to erm. Forgive me. Mental blank...

Ye gads! :\ Rowling.
Just personally, I'm not into Harry Potter at all.

I consider them both to be great series'. They are different in many respects. Lord of the Rings is one epic saga spit into three movies, whereas Harry Potter is a collection of individual stories.

If I had to compare them directly, I would favor LotR. I guess I favor the more adult oriented story and the epic nature of it. I also think it has better re-watch value, especially with the extended editions.

i really like both of them, as you can tell by my mt name , and my email address (merry_24_7). i really feel that you can't compare the two. one is a fantasical history. if you think about it, it could really happen. harry potter is completely different. i really feel that there are people that are witches and warlocks, buit that story is fiction and fantasy and that is all.
so if push came to shove i would choose them both because, i can sit there and read both types of books, and watch both movies. they are very re-watchable and awesome. the books are deffinitely re-readable. i think that i have read the 1-3 books 3-4 times and i always draw something new from them, same with lotr. i have read all of the books 3 times. so i choose both
:D XD :nya: :)

harry potter!!!!!

Lotr would beat the crap out of Harry Potter. Gandalf would kick Dumbledore's ass. Gandalf managed to destroy the Balrog, I doubt dumbledore could do the same. Dumbledore wouldn't survive a fight against a pack of Uruk-hai. but storywise Lotr is much better than Harry Potter.

Going straight by the movies without involving the book - from an epic standpoint, I definitely would choose LotR. But on a personal basis, I'd root for Dumbledore in a magic fight. While Gandalf taking down a balrog is impressive and all, he's a Maiar, more or less immortal & most probably never had to learn for his magic. The humble Dumbledore is mortal to boot, definitely at some point in time a student in magic himself. That I can identify with.

I'd personally pay to see Gandalf going against a wizard with real power like Elminster or Raistlin or Lina Inverse, etc. Any of these ubermages would send Gandalf back crying. :p

A lot of people have never read the LOTR books so its always hard to say which is better. I think LOTR beats Harry Potter because the story is much better (in my opinion) and the movies too, were better. Both of the series' books were well written and the Harry Potter movies weren't that bad. But I'd have to say LOTR wins this fight.

It's an age thing in my opinion...

Older/younger people tend to prefer HP, whereas,
The middle generation tend to prefer lotr.

i am NOT making a sterotype, so don't quote me, saying that you're the other way round.

P.S. I've read both j.r.r. Tolkein and J.K. Rowling's books.

pra mim ambos são lixos

pra mim ambos são lixos

i hate lord' game
i harte harry's game

the movie is good.....

Lord of the Rings is a masterpiece, so I'm not sure if you could really compare the two...

I think Harry Potter SUX!!
Lord of the Rings is the best movie and every game is better than this HP stuff.

I don't like Harry Potter books... they just feel like childrens books... I like LotR best. The best fantasy book out there in my opinion. The general feel in the books, the immense work that Tolkien did when creating Middle Earth... I really can't explain what this book means to me....

Wha---?

But of course! The One Epic to rule them all, T H E Lord of the Rings.

Pit the LOTR books against HP and the former would probably win. LOTR's action mojo is waay above HP levels. Add to that an extensive line of Middle Earth history books and the later guides to life on Middle Earth and you've got yourself an engrossing read that will take months off your social life. And HP has yet to reach "Classic" status so no contest there.

The LOTR movies are by far one of the best to ever grace movie theaters. The books are great too. Harry Potter movies suck big ass, but I love the books.

in terms of the movies, LOTR was great, the HP movies weren't so good except for the third one that kicked incredible arse.

As for the books, I prefer HP. I don't fall asleep at least. *waits for the beating*

before, i liked harry potter better... but now.... i like lord of the rings better. I didn't like the 3rd hp movie.... it wasn't that good. but i'm looking forward to the fourth! and i can't wait for the 6th book
