some assistent at my school has been giving me a hard time. the project is to make a web site(witch will be done in a month) and i want to make it for 1024*768 screens, but he says that the majority of peolpe have 640*480 screens. me i don't care about the majority, what do you have?

1024*768 of course! - this assistant must be old school. lmao!

Like 640 by 480, what does he run, a Pentium II? He's missing out. >_>

i think he does. seriously. thanks for the quick pick me up :)

I tend to use 1600 x 1200 which is handy for straining your eyes at the smallish text. I really use that though so I canhave my games running at the same resolution. I wonder if anyone out here strays into the 2000+ territory? Show offs....

the majority of people use 1024x768 or higher (about 50%) ... about 20% have 800x600 and only like 5% use 640x640. It was the majority years ago.

yeeeees! if you don't mind i'm gonna go shove that in his face. ^_^

I'm using what is fast becoming the new standard [1280x1024] :) . 1024x768 is perfect for a web page though.

The last time I ran at 640x480 was way back on my 486dx33. Thats right before pentium the 486 was screemin at 33mhz. I have been in 1024x768 since I got my first pentium PC and have never looked back.

1024x768 for me thanks to my laptop's VGA display, used 1600x1200 on my old PC, I miss those days.

lolz! 800x600 here... it's my eyes.. i get headaches from 1024x768 above resolutions

Well, mine's a little different, being a widescreen - 1280x854. That said, in terms of web development don't code for anything less than 800x600. Seriously. 640x480 is just a little bit old now. Unless the majority of viewers of your site are going to be using, what, more than five year old machines, it's pointless. I'd just make it in 1024x768, myself. The majority of viewers will be able to see it just fine - and if you like, you could do an 800x600 version, but it's probably a waste of effort.

i used 1280x1024, my monitor 17" LCD is optimized this resolution

I run at 1280 x 960, because i prefer 1 to .75 ratio. Like valsimot said 1600 x 1200 is too hard on the eyes for extended periods of time. I also don't wear glasses yet and I'm not trying to rush toward that prospect, any time soon.

Re your web site, 1024 x 768 is pretty much standard these days. I did do one for a church this summer in 800 x 600, but they have a lot of older people in the congregation. But damn, 640 x 480, I don't even run my crappy little test monitor I keep in my trunk that low.

I use 1600x1200 @132DPI.

If the text seems too small in a high resolution, it's because the DPI is set wrong. (The default DPI on Windows, for instance, is 96dpi. If I used that, the text would really get too small on my 17'' monitor.)

Unfortunately, a lot of Windows programs are broken and don't work well with any DPI setting except the default. Since I use Linux, almost all programs work perfectly with a non-default DPI (Linux historically had two default DPI settings, 75dpi and 100dpi). The main exception is Mozilla (Firefox and others), which honors the DPI but for some reason has the default font size set in pixels.

Also, some websites set the font size in pixels, resulting in a too small font. Firefox has a minimum font size setting exactly because of that.

Back on topic, you should search for some sites that have statistics on how many people have each resolution. For instance, http://www.upsdell.com/BrowserNews/stat_trends.htm says ~1% use 640x480, ~32% use 800x600, and ~65% use 1024x768 or more. http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp has a more detailed list (showing that for instance the number of 800x600 users is reducing).

It is possible (if you know how) to make a flexible design which works for any resolution; you should try that, so you can please him while not doing a painfully small design (I see too many sites that are a small thin column running down the left side of the viewport, leaving a huge blank space to the right).

1024x768 is a good resolution to design for, although I use 1280x1024.

1280x960
I used to use 1280x1024 till I realized it wasn't a proper 4x3 ratio.

the w3schools link will burry him ^_^ thanks person.

i run on 1280x1024 rez, but i need more space!....but my crappy ATI Graphics card wont allow it, damn it!

I have 3 19" LCD's at work all spanned to act as one single desktop so native resolution is 1280x1024 but total destop space is 3840x1024. At home my gaming computer has a 23" Sony Trinitron running 2048x1536, my Linux worsktation has two 18" LCD's running at 1600x1200 (3200x1200), and my IM/Downloading computer has a 17" CRT running @ 1600x1200.

1024x768 because it's sufficient :)

As long as my monitor can't hold 85hz in resolutions greater than 1024x768 and I don't ilke headaches (if u know what i mean), I still in 1024x768.

1024x768 has been the defacto standard for years. Anything less would be running on a computer that is probably too slow to be usable.

640x480? Who does he think he's kidding? Windows XP won't let you set it below 800x600.

Just make sure that the site scales well to higher resolutions. Nothing is more annoying that browsing a site that keeps itself in tiny little box, on a 1280x1024 display. Oh, and don't use frames (or iframes) either; they are extremely poor design.

1152x864, bigger than this will make my eyes pop out

i use 1280*1024 because that's my monitor's native resolution
