Hmm.... that's right, I never got to see Way Of The Gun. I'll pick up Who I
Cletis Tout, Stark Raving Mad, Amelie, and The Big Empty uh...in five
days.
Yes! Boondock Saints is a great movie! I was pleasantly surprised, even though
I already had a high opinion of Defoe. I've seen this one 10+ times.
All other recommendations I've seen and enjoyed. I'm a tough movie critic, so
some of them I'd probably only feel were worth seeing once in the theatre. Just
for reference, I've only felt like seeing about four movies more than once at
the box office. Brother is one of them, so all of you who haven't seen it, go
rent it.
Just a pet-peeve... I hate The Last Samurai.* I'm nikkei, Japanese-American and
also shizoku(samurai), just the fn idea of Tom Cruise being the last samurai
rubs me the wrong way. Yeah, the acting was very good, especially some of the
nihonjin cast, but the whole project just irks me.
*Please understand; this is just my personal and highly subjective opinion.
Feel free to enjoy this wonderful gem of Japanese culture exploitation, er,
exploration that Hollywood has chosen to shi...er, put out. If I was able to get past my slight at the idea of
Hollywood playing to the recent explosion of interest in things from
Japan(read:Anime/Manga), I'm sure that I would have enjoyed the movie.
Oh, yeah... Hero. This is a...well made movie. Its good. There are a lot of
movies about the first Qin emporer and this one does it quite well. Its more of
an action movie than drama, though. If you want real drama, go out and find The
Emporer and The Assassin. That's a [ul]great[/ul] movie. Strangly enough
though, the main character kinda looks like the bad guy from Kung Pow(the
original one from Tiger and Crane, not the other Betty).....
Right......
cromsblood recommends: The Emporer and The Assassin
Ok I'm adding another to the pot, you may have seen it but I only just saw it an
hour ago and I'm still in shock at how good the movie is.
Garden State: Written, Directed, and Staring Zach Braff (He is the main
character on Scrubs) It's about a guy who comes back home for his mothers
fueneral and finally finds out what life is. It's absolutely amazing, and the
soundtrack is really great as well. Anyone who hasn't seen this movie owes it to
themselves to go out and rent this movie right away.
thanks for the recomendations lou&croms. adding both of those to my netflix
list.
i had a similar veiw going into 'the last samurai' and all through the film, i
kept scoughing at cruz, but in the end, i liked it as a whole, just getting past
the fact its tom cruz, was very hard for me.
anyhow, i picked up 'running out a good one last night, of time' this was a
'jonny to' film staring 'andy lau'. they have done a number of films together
that i should have listed earlyer but neglected.
running on karma, fulltime killer, running out of time. these are the only three
i have seen, but there are more.
My other favorites have to be Ocean's Eleven (Twelve isn't that good- don't
bother), Hero (the cinematography was simply breathtaking), and Dodgeball, which
has to be one of the funniest movies of all time. Ever.
I'm afraid to admit it, but I've only seen one Star Trek movie all the way
through and that was Star Trek: First Contact. What are some of the good ones
out there? Other than Wrath of Khan.
I liked Pirates of the Caribbean! I think that one scene in the beginning is
the best cinematic I've ever seen. The rest of the movie was pretty good, too.
I bought the DVD just so I could watch that one scene.
Sounds like I'd better get Garden State, too.
EDIT: Januaray 6, 2005 ----
As for movies, I just picked up Garden State last night, but haven't had the
time to watch it yet. I watched The Big Empty three times over, twice so I
could get everything and the third time just because I really liked it. I
happened to see Six-String Samurai laying on the shelf at my university video
store, so I rented that for one night. Must've been at least the tenth time
I've seen that. I guess its better to watch with friends, but everyone I know
is study-abroad right now. Uh, one of my few friends who is still around had
the Tarantino release of Hero.... I don't know... I liked the VCD version that
my parents have more. Its worth watching once, but The Emporer and The Assassin
is a better way to tell the legend in my opinion. Managed to sit through The
Bourne Supremacy. It so-so. I'm getting a little tired of movies based on
books, though. I got I, Robot as a X-mas present and it was still enjoyable
watching it the third time. Well, most of the movies I've watched are between
3-4 on a five point scale. Nothing really bad, but nothing that I'd watch twice
in the theatre. Next on my rental queue is Stark Raving Mad, followed up by
Amelie and then Who Is Cletus Tout?

Even if it's old now, I really love the suspense going all along that film ! And Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster are so wonderful !
