I have a friend who is a real history and war nut, loves everything from the
Napoleonic Wars to World War II with a passion. He's the kind of guy who does
Civil War re-enactments.
In any case, showed him the first episode of Last Exile, and he's hooked now.
Hmph..My friends and I were trying to persuade this girl to watch DN Angel and
Inuyasha. So we were gushing all day about how cute Dark and Inuyasha was.And
finally one day,she watched it..she said it was nice but she still haven't got
into anime. Then one day,my friend borrowed her a Hack Sign TV special to let her
watch,after watching the first disc,she gave up.Wth.:x
wanted my friend to watch fruits basket, she didnt like the idea because of the
name and stuff, but i brought a dvd over her place one day, and ever since than
she has been stuck on Fruits basket.
i made them watch "fushigi yugi." yes i know it's a girly flick... but
it still has a great storyline. my friends got hook on it too! i also introduce
mangas to them.

Same, I got a lot of my friends hooked by pursuading them to see Fruits Basket,
specially one who went and bought the boxset a week later!
However, when I first started getting into anime, I bought the first volume of
Rurouni Kenshin, and was completely hooked so of course I needed to show it to
my best friend. And she loved it too, and bought me the second volume for my
birthday!
heheh...generally the first thing you should just find out what your friend
likes and show them an anime based on a similar setting...you can't believe how
many I got hooked even though i haven't even tried...they come into my room
(when I was living in a boarding house)...look at what I'm doing "hey that
looks interesting" *they sit down* and voila...instant fan XP
I promote them thru the pictures / pin-ups / calendar on / at my desk @ work.
They would come, oh, anime/manga again and ask a bit - and I would lend them a
few. Then they would come back and ask for other recommendation.
I used DBZ for one of my friends. Sadly it's the only anime he will watch.
With another friend of mine it was Fist of the Northstar and Street Fighter II
The Movie. We was in the 10th grade and a classmate let me hold his copies and
when my buddy came over to visit the next day I showed him the both of them and
he fell in love. Since he was a huge Street Fighter IIfan and Street Fighter
II was still hot back then it help him even more. He still watches anime and
even put me on to some shows. Sadly though he has grown a hentai addiction
also.

difficult:
just deny him the possibility of watching a hollywood-movie while I was there (i
was there almost the hole day, everyday)
I pretty much did it the same way, deny to possibility of watching anything else
until I finished watching all of my movies. It's a very effective way of doing
it.
I usually just suggest a series...but these days,I've given up. I hate trying to
convert people to my opinion and trying to get them into my hobbies, because it
bothers me so much when others do that to me. In South Africa, anime is a bit of
a rarity - you can't buy DVDs unless you have a LOT of money to waste (wanna
spend 300 US dollars for 1 boxset of 26 episodes?) so people kind of need to
make an effort to get fansubs from people like me,who collect it. But if
someone IS interested, then I'm more than happy to share and spread the
disease!
But to date,I've gotten 11 people into anime - most of them unintentionally
One of my friends already liked Dragon Ball Z. So I said to him, 'If you think
DBZ is awesome there is a whole wide world of other even better anime out there.
There's something for everyone'.
I had another friend, she liked blood, violence, vampires etc. So I showed her
Beserk, Helsing and Vampire Hunter D. Now she likes it even more.
Come on I want to here more stories. I've opened up a couple of peoples mind to
anime and they love it. Their was one person that doesn't, but I still found
something he liked. For people who like movies Armatige III polymatrix has been
the key. GTO works well because Eikichi's behavier/actions are not expected and
it makes people laugh. Please give me your experiances and details.
I got one friend (now an ex-girlfriend) started on anime by showing her an
episode of Panda-Z..
Now she's hooked onto things like Kaleido Star, CCS, etc.. (just last week she
was over to watch the first episode of Wandaba Style )
Also got a friend of mine started by just randomly bringing manga into school
(usually stacks of 5 or 6) and letting him borrow any that interested him. Also,
i've let him watch some DVD's i've bought or unlicensed anime's i've torrented.
Conversion, how did you start someone, what titles did you use and how many people have you opened to this new media?

Wasn't too difficult:
just deny him the possibility of watching a hollywood-movie while I was there (i was there almost the hole day, everyday)
try using intro animes:
Like :
Miyazaki movies,
Ranma 1/2
Sailor Moon
...etc
