iPod Shuffle - What do you think?

What do you guys think about the new Apple iPod Shuffle? It's a Flash MP3 player, with 512 Mb and 1 Gb sizes, for $99 and $149, respectively.

I would totally get this over the regular iPods. I don't have tons of music, so I'll take the smaller space for a longer battery life, and the ability to act as a thumb drive to store files. I was also considering the Creative Nomad...

I wish I saved $40-$50 and bought a iPod mini instead. I have 17 or so gigs on my iPod I bought myself for Christmas >_<

Sounds like a damn good idea to me... I'd be much more likely to buy one of those. Are they available yet?

The ipod-mini is capable of doing all these things, and it comes with a 4GB capacity. The only difference is the price. The size is small, it's fits perfectly and snuggly in my hand/ pocket. And it can hold 4GBs of files or music, your choice. As I got this ipod-mini, I now have no need for my USB flash stick. Because the ipod now replaces that.

What I don't understand is how the iPod Shuffle only lasts 12 hours on a charge, and the iRiver iFP-790 lasts 40 hours on a charge.

I think 12 hours is pretty reasonable, personally speaking. I mean, I don't go on road trips or anything like that. And for a 512mb, $100 is a steal!

iPod Shuffle well ... you can put like 100s of songs in there and you'll never found it again w/o the viewing screen. I'll stay with the ipod idea... but then again... this thing is alot cheaper... but then again... theres gonna be alot of other ipod like product coming out... so if you are looking for something like this... I'll stay tune and wait ... ^^

Ipod shuffle? It sounds like a cheap attempt to make some money! What a piece of crap.

If you actually look at the iPod mini and an iPod (4th gen), they mini is only smaller by a pretty negligible amount. The mini also has some rather nasty engineering design flaws as well. Given that it's only slightly cheaper than the 20GB iPod, but only holds 4GB, I'll take the regular one any day over the mini.

Only shuffle mode, I think i'm waiting sometime to buy a mini ^^

I thought it was only shuffle, but there's also a "Play in order" mode. I just realized that the iPod shuffle isn't vacation friendly. You have to charge it with a USB port, unless you spend an extra $30 to buy the AC adapter.

I have a 4G 20GB iPod loaded with about 12GB of music. However, my listening habits are a) restricted, mostly, to 100 odd songs and b) almost always on shuffle mode.

As such, an iPod shuffle is, well, exactly what my listening habits suit. Load a hundred odd songs on, stick it on shuffle mode and go. Also, if you feel like it, build an ordered playlist and switch it to 'play in order' mode - works fine.

The iPod shuffle will likely be a lot more popular amongst the gym crowd who need something more robust than the HDD based iPod for excercising - solid state, after all. And of course, it's got the whole 'brand lure' thing, as well as the iTMS thing. I think it'll sell. In fact, it already is.

The battery life is the only thing about it that really dissapoints me - and I think Apple will probably tune that shortly. If an iPod photo can get 15 hours out of a charge, the shuffle should be able to do at least that. Might be simply a matter of a firmware upgrade. Wait and see, I guess.

Get an Creative machine, it is cheaper and offer the same functionalies.....

get the creative! it does more, has a display, lasts really long and is absolutely better.

I have one and the iPod is like the OLD original Muvo with a little more space. No display ... who cares if it can shuffle music? any audio player should be able to do this and the creatives already can!

I just turned mine on to check ;)

it's also got a nifty belt clip and slide out usb stick, so you can switch colors on the battery pack. I like red.

I think 1GB of space is okay for me. I'd feel comfortable with a little more, though. Creative's lineup looks pretty strong. Better battery life, more space, better sound quality, eq, and lots of other tiny stuff make it a little more attractive than the iPod. Too bad it's ugly, haha...

I just checked out the iPod Shuffle and it seems pretty cool. I don't think it's meant to replace the iPod, it's just meant for playing some music while you go to the gym or for a walk, you know, kinda like those arm radios (Exactly like the ad shows ^_^' ).

I was skeptical about the iPod Shuffle, but to be honest, if the price is reasonable, then I wouldn't mind paying a little over a memory stick as long as it performs in the same way. I have an iRiver h320, so I have no need for anything else ^^ .

Just ordered mine :D
The 1 gig model - now can do some mountain biking without fear of destroying a $400.00 iPod

This is an attempt from Apple to steal little boy's money

I think this guy is exactly right. It's not meant to replace anything. The shuffle is aimed at the people who may/or may not have an iPod already, but are looking for something smaller, and less expensive, so that if something did happen, it wouldn't be the end of the world. I also think that a lot of us have these huge 20Gb iPods, but only listen to about 100-200 of the songs on it. I think that the shuffle is a great way to take the music that we actually want to listen to with us instead of our 2500 song collection that we maybe listen to 150 songs of at max. I like Apple too much to say anything bad about their products, but I'm also not gonna say anything good that doesn't actually make real sense.

The iPod Shuffle does have it's pros: it uses flash memory so it can withstand much more impact than the Hard Drive iPods and it is more compact and lighter. But comparing the iPod Shuffle to other mp3 flash players, I would say that the size is still not small enough.

I have the 60GB Ipod Photo One of the main reasons I have this because I can play photos in a slideshow to music and play it through any monitor or TV. It makes for really nice presentations. I also have all my music on it (about 6,800 Songs) and about 12,000 photos. You just have to ask yourself what you would like to do with it and then from there choose which is best for you. If you only have a limited amount of MP3's, then by all means, the iPod shuffle would be ideal. From what I hear, it's really nice.

I can understand that some people would rather have a flash player, but... I still prefer the regular, true-blue iPod to any other mp3/m4p players out there. I've got the U2-edition, myself, and I can't imagine getting 20-40x less space for a whole third of the price.
