DURANGO, Colo. (Reuters) - A Colorado judge ordered two teen-age girls to pay
about $900 for the distress a neighbor said they caused by giving her home-made
cookies adorned with paper hearts.
The pair were ordered to pay $871.70 plus $39 in court costs after neighbor
Wanita Renea Young, 49, filed a lawsuit complaining that the unsolicited
cookies, left at her house after the girls knocked on her door, had triggered an
anxiety attack that sent her to the hospital the next day.
Taylor Ostergaard, then 17, and Lindsey Jo Zellitte, 18, paid the judgment on
Thursday after a small claims court ruling by La Plata County Court Judge Doug
Walker, a court clerk said on Friday.
The girls baked cookies as a surprise for several of their rural Colorado
neighbors on July 31 and dropped off small batches on their porches, accompanied
by red or pink paper hearts and the message: "Have a great
night."
The Denver Post newspaper reported on Friday that the girls had decided to stay
home and bake the cookies rather than go to a dance where there might be cursing
and drinking.
It reported that six neighbors wrote letters entered as evidence in the case
thanking the girls for the cookies.
But Young said she was frightened because the two had knocked on her door at
about 10:30 p.m. and run off after leaving the cookies.
She went to a hospital emergency room the next day, fearing that she had
suffered a heart attack, court records said.
The judge awarded Young her medical costs, but did not award punitive damages.
He said he did not think the girls had acted maliciously but that 10:30 was
fairly late at night for them to be out.
Now that's wrong. And they tried to be nice instead of getting drunk....

girls baking cookies instead of getting drunk....seems nice enough to me

In a way, it seems really funny, but I don't really think it's fair! I mean all
they did was give cookies! It's that woman's problem she got like that. Those
girls should've hired a better lawyer
I don't know what's worst, the fact that the woman brought them to court, or the
fact that the judge actually made the 2 girls pay a fine. But I guess they
learned a valuable lesson, next time they should go to the party, and get in a
drunken reck on the way home.

That's a sad thing to say.
If they were drunk, they would've been caught by the law if they even tried to
give cookies to the neighbor. The reason being is because they are both
underage. The girls were only sharing their love.
Well one of them was 18, so she wasn't underage. But that's completely besides
the point, this article just goes to show how jaded society and even the court
systems have become in this country. It's really a sad state of affairs, the
women who sued the poor kids really should be ashamed of herself.
See?, never stay at home, always go out with your friends and have fun and
remember being a bad girl is always better than being a good one, in this way,
you wont be receiving a ridiculous sue
Thats bs. Sue'n lil girls over some nice cookies. My god, what has our world
truned into. Someone beat that old maid and teach her a thing or two about
common sence.
There's just no getting some people. But seriously that was some kind of
surprise that that old lady had for her to have a heart attack because of that.

She isnt that old, that lady is only 49 years... What I
learned from this is to never give cookies to my neighbors....
This only show how paranoic the people can be. If I hadn't made anything wrong
then why someone would leave a dangerous package at my door?
I think the judge is way too wrong, it's clear that the girls didn't act in a
maliciously way and the thanking letters from other neighbors probe it... why
only she was affraid of the box?
Now that's wrong. And they tried to be nice instead of getting drunk....

What kind of bull**** is this?
People are so damn quick to judge...she saw cookies. That's why the 2 girls knocked and not try to barge in. Duh!
