Goku is nowhere near the most powerful. Hell, he's not even the most powerful
within his own series. Vegetto (or whatever you want to call the Vegeta-Goku
fusion using the earrings) was.
The single strongest character...I'd say the Lord of Nightmares from Slayers,
who's omnipotent in the truest sense of the word. Other contenders are Lain
from Serial Experiments Lain, who becomes an omnipotent goddess in her world,
Dark Schneider from Bastard!, Athena and Hades from Saint Seiya, and some more
that I can't think of.

I disagree. For one, if I had felt that a Fusion character would count, I would
have picked Gogeta, of the SS4 variety. Besides, if he wanted to, he could have
easily collected the Dragonballs for himself and wished himself immortal or
omnipotent. On top of that the guy could easily destroy entire galaxies, and the
universe itself if he had anywhere near the lifespan to do so.

Goku isn't anywhere near galaxy busting power. At most, he could maybe take out
a solar system at absolute full power. Furthermore, the dragonballs are limited
by what the eternal dragon is capable of doing; that's why they couldn't wish
someone invincible or wish the villains away. Did you miss the part where they
explained that?
You say that Goku could destroy the universe if he had a long enough lifespan.
First off, I'm not talking about destroying all the planets and stars in the
universe. I'm talking about destroying the universe entirely, as in all of
creation and everything that is and ever was, and there's no way in hell Goku
can do that. But let's assume that destroying the universe only involves
destroying the planets and stars and such. Goku could do it if he had a long
enough time, yes, but <b>so could I</b>. Given an unlimited amount
of time, anybody could. That makes your condition rather ridiculous. Of the
other characters I mentioned, on the other hand, two could do it with a thought,
and the other three have the ability to do it much, much faster than Goku ever
will.
Additionally, in a straight up fight, Goku wouldn't stand a chance against any
of them. The Lord of Nightmares and Lain could easily just erase him from
existence with a thought. This is NOT the same as just killing him;
essentially, they are rewriting the history of the world so that Goku would
never have existed. Athena and Hades could do similar things, as the scale of
their power is far beyond whatever Goku could even dream of. Dark Schneider
could kill Goku before Goku even moves, then go into Hell and destroy Goku's
soul.
