I love gay anime. I watch gay anime, make slashy pairings, and read doujin.
But I feel as if this is an American phenomenon.
So the question becomes one of "why"? Are we that repressed and
aching for a normal distribution of sexuality, that we turn to cartoons to slake
our thirst for equality? And do we choose cartoons because the idea of sexual
equality is so fantasticly ellusive?
I would love your imput, seeing as I am majoring in Psychology and Anthropology
and am also taking Japanese.
If there is any reason, which I don't believe there is, it's because yaoi is
something not really found on American TV. the FCC would get flooded with
anti-gay activist complaints for any thing even remotely yaoi. So you don't see
that stuff on American tv.
I mean, it's obviously not just an american thing, but I think it's previlance
is something to make not of. I mean, look at the anime that is just coming out
in japan - Loveless, Sukisho, etc ect. Gay anime. And there are slashy
pairings all over the net - people wanting certain characters to be together,
who aren't.
i mean, regardless of your personaly beliefs, people love gay anime.
I'm no expert in girls, but I've always found that most girls are attracted to
gays. I'm not sure on the exact reason, but I guess it would have to do with
gays thinking more like a female than most males do, and therfor they dress in
ways more attractive to females and just understand them better? Because this
already happens in real life, its not suprizing some chicks like the read manga
of gays for me, as for the sex, I wouldnt really know.
Yes. Ther probably is nothing special... but still. Why do I want Envy and Ed
to just, tackle eachother and have passionate gay love? Why do I want Ban and
Ginji to just, finally KISS damn it? Why do we want characters together that
aren't meant to be. I feel like that is something interesting to look at. The
urge to pair. The biggest buyers of doujin are americans. In Japan, doujinshi
is super cheep, but here, there is such a demand, they know they can charge
super high. hmm....

couple.... but going to a convention can change that opinion...
I got 2 GB's doujin at Anime Boston 2005... and I'm looking for more... the
anime artbook does help...

Straight guys get all weirded out by shounen-ai anime It's
annoying being the only girl in a house that never sees other females besides my
mom (who'd probably raise an eyebrow) and the RARE RARE RARE visit of some of my
friends... Why is it so rare? They either live across the city/out of town
and/or are way too busy to come over ;-;
But yeah, Shounen-ai anime is made FOR girls BY girls, you know, right? A lot of
gay guys I know look at Shounen-ai and Yaoi and think it's just crazy stuff
because it's nothing like real life... And of course they'd know.
Girls like that "forbidden love" feel... they tend to love romance,
drama and angst and Shounen-ai has all of this just because of what it is... I
don't think I've ever seen a blatant shounen-ai that didn't have some sort of
Taboo about homosexuality or a taboo period or at least have one character that
gets freaked out at being advanced on by a guy.
Outlaw Star - Gene gets freaked by Fred who's madly in love with him,
Sukisho - Sora gets freaked by Ran coming onto him and freaks about the fact
that Gaku is swooning over his Nagisa.
Gravitation - Half the series is trying to hide the fact Shuichi is a Homosexual
from the media and then there is a lot of doubt on Shuichi's part whether it's
right to love a guy.
Kyou Kara Maou - Yuuri gets freaked when he ends up proposing to Wolfram, and
identifies it as a taboo for him.
Fushigi Yuugi - On a few occasions where crossdressing is involved (and
sometimes when it's not ) some male
characters get hit on by other males and are disturbed
Earthian - This more has a taboo on love in general like "Angels are not
supposed to love" I've only seen the OAVs and it might even be that the
fact it's homosexual makes it worse?
Please Save My Earth - A girl reincarnated as a guy remains in love with the
same guy from her las life even though she is now a he in the new life.
Yami no Matsuei - Tsuzuki gets the jitters when Muraki comes onto him.
Seriously... It's the "forbidden territory" thing. ITs a "We want
what we can't have". Yes girls like gay guys because they're sensitive and
feminine, but they can't have them... so why not have the next best thing? Have
them together! This phenomenon happened with Gundam Wing... most people HATE all
the girls in this show... especially Relena...So they make slash for the guys to
be together... and what happens with the two favored females? They get paired as
a Yuri pairing xd
