My wife tels me i am to old to be watching cartoons, After showing her Ninja Scroll she realised that some anime is not for kiddies but she still says they are childish when it comes to YuGiOh and Love Hina and other similar titles. So how old is too old for anime?

There really isn't a 'too old' for anime. There are certain types of anime targeted at different age kids ie. Hamtaro, YuGiOh, Sailor moon and then there are anime targeted to adult ie. Ninja Scroll, Great Teacher Onizuka, Kenshin. I'm 31 and watch more anime than broadcast TV and had a 67 year old in my old anime club.

The big issue isn't how old but how young. Adults can watch whatever they want, you just have to be careful which anime kids watch which anime. I remember a father renting Legend of the Overfiend (nasty hentai) for a 12 year old against the recommendations of the anime shop and then freaking out.

As i said previously there obviously is no age limit on anime, But as you said that certain types of anime are targeted at different age groups, however myself being the ripe age of 27 still enjoy watching YuGiOh and hamtaro (not a big fan of the moon rabbit but) and I also play the yugioh trading card game. For some people they see an animation and before realising the whole perspective behind it judge it as childish. This is what gets me a little angry.

lol well I think there is no limit age to cartoons or anime^_^
and I may be wrong about this, but I noticed that usually adult anime has more hentai (?)
and such animes like YuGiOh and Hamtaro, isn't as adultish ^^;
it's only my opinion though^^;; and everyone has different tastes in what they like, so no, I don't think it's wrong for a 27 years old to be liking anime =D

obviously there is no such thing as too old to watch nime......but there are certain type of anime there are intended for young viewer but in any case its the same if want to watch them or not...... but children who underage should not watch the kind of anime that contain any hentai material

Not only this but younger veiwers should not be exposed to high levels of violence either.
I remember the first anime i ever saw was akira and the scene when the abducter is sheilding the young blue child was quite disturbing when i saw it at around age 13. I watched it again last year and it still gave me shivers to see that sort of thing. I know what to expect and it still has the same effect to this day. I guess it is better to do some research into certain films before viewing. Anyone else think so and how does high level graphical exposure effect you?

yah i agree that there are certain anime that young children should not watch, but i don't think that you can be too old to watch it cuz there's ppl who are "young at heart"... XP my cousin (30) and i swap animes all the time!

dude anime freakin rules it doesn't matter how old you are i'm sixteen and i still watch cartoons and buy graphic novels. just because you get old doesn't mean you have to stop doing what you love

Considering some of the drek that plays on prime time TV (both the networks & cable), anime is a nice alternative which can appeal on all levels. If my great uncle can still rock out to 60's tunes, why can't those beyond their teens years enjoying anime (or manga)? ;)

Great points but what if your anime intrest seem slightly childish to those around you. My daughter (14 months old) and i love hamtaro but is it childish for me to enjoy watching it?
If a certain anime is designed for younger veiwers is it too immature for someone my age to enjoy it as much as a child?

I think anime are like the normal shows we watch everyday, where some shows are for kids and others for adults. The only difference is that anime is animated, while normal shows have real actors. Most non-anime fans think that anime are like Disney cartoons, therefore they dismiss them as "childish". It's just too bad that they don't know anime also deals with real life issues.

Also, its not wrong for older adults to like shows originally meant for kids, like Spongebob Squarepants. Children love to watch him, but he's also liked by a fair amount of grown ups.
*pants* Sorry for the rant, but that's only my opinion~

saying someone is too old to watch anime is like saying someone is "too old to watch movies" or "too old to watch tv". it's just that in american culture, anything drawn or anything animated tends to cause people to equate it to "the care bears" or "my little pony". there isn't much animation that comes into mainstream america that's intended for older audiences, so americans aren't used to having anime for all ages.

Of course theres an age limit. When you are like 115 and your eyes have deteriorated so much that you are practically blind, you are too old to watch anime. At that age you're too old to watch anything.

the only limit I can think of is when I'm dead then I'm to old for anime ;P

The border line that really some people really mis-understand is the difference between hentai (which i hate) and an anime like Elfen Lied. Elfen may be very graphic in terms of violence, but contains nothing which i would class as hentai or fan-serve. Neudity (which, when you get right down to it, is just anatomi) does not equal hentai, it is entierly depentant on the implication of the image. So should something like Elfen Lied be rated 12 or 18 if released in the uk? My guess it that it will be 18 simple because of people's small mindedness...

wow... Ninja Scroll, Akira, AND Spongebob Squarepants frikkin' rock hardcore!!! I like anime because it goes beyond reality.. most of them, like manga and comic books. who cares if other people think you are too old or too young...? indulge YOUR senses, WE ARE human!!!! whether befalls you trauma, terror, or fiendism.. we all fall eventually.

It doesn't matter how old you are. There are different genres for different age groups. Adventure types are for younger people. Mystery and other similar types are for older people (that's because they understand and appreciate it). An of course, there's the hentai genre for the adults... adults!!!

Hello Skyboy :)
how are you doing?

well... i think that there is no limit in watching anime and just what Staff is saying that there are different genres of anime... some are more for kids like hamtaro and some things like hentai for older people
so i dont think that there is any limit in watching anime
so i would say just continue watching anime :)
well...
see you later and have a nice day :)
bye bye and take care

You're never too old. If you enjoy watching something, why should you give it up.

generalizing anime as "childish" doesn't really have much merit because there are so many different types of anime, like movies, and to call all anime "meant for younger generations" is like saying all movies are meant for younger generations. it just doesn't work that way.

a lot of people who dont understand anime. even adults in japan watch/read anime/manga. to say cartoons are childish based on the cartoons of the u.s., etc, which are aimed specifically at kids, isn't right because things aren't the same everywhere ^_^;

You can never be too old to watch anime. But once you are tired of watching anime, I guess that is when you are too old (which should be never)

I agree entirely and even if most US toons are aimed at children there atre still a few adult ones around too.
I now think that with age comes a realisation that the older you get the more you understand and it goes the same for anime, that is why there are age restrictions, of course because you wouldn't sit a 5 year old in front of Ninja Scroll or Elfen Lied. I guess even if you do watch the child age aimed anime you can still find a deeper meaning to what is going on, for instance, most of the newer Disney movies contain lines with double meanings and sexual inuendos so i guess even the ones aimed at kids can have some sort of deeper meaning that a child wouldnt understand.

I will probably quit on anime when I have children of my own. Or maybe even before that. I've seen those parents who cosplay and drag their kids to animecons, I'm definitely not going to be like them :D

Wow they're alot of grownups here....I think that you can watch whatever anime you want. No age is too old for anime cause....it just depends on what kind of person you are. You can quit watching when you get older, or you can just watch more...if your wife thinks that it's kiddish, just say that you like it and that you're not her..(sorry if that sounds mean... XO I criticise too much...) Or just say "It's ok. It's just me to be watching anime"^^
