I'm curious why so many people dislike dubbed anime in its entirety. I have a
great deal of respect for many of the English voiceactors, in some cases whom
are generally held to be better than the Japanese ones.
Yes, I've seen badly dubbed anime (Inuyasha, anyone?), but that leads many to
say, on various occassions I've seen it, that they 'avoid dubbed anime at all
costs' or that 'if it's dubbed, it's bad.'
There are also the trip-ups on the translations, or a line that died when the
English voiceactor did it (Mwu la Flaga's dying words made him sound like he was
constipated), but there were also characters who had bland Japanese seiyuu and
were given excellent actors in English, like Rau le Creuset (or Raww le
Klueze).
Just because you've seen a bad movie in the theatre doesn't mean you never watch
another movie made in America again.
Speaking of bad dub voices,even though its not anime related,I cringed at Soul
Calibur 2 Yunsung's english voice. I thought his Japanese voice sounded better
IMO its because more than half the time the english dub is realy bad and doest
sound any where near wht people are used to e.g. yami no mitsuie(aka decendants
of darkness) cant remember his name but that bird thing that flies about the jap
voices showed him as quite a high pitched kiddy can of voice then the dub
version he has a very deep voice which doesnt go with the character at all. Yet
again there have been some really good dubbed stuff out there one of the best
IMO was golden boy. the jap voices sucked a** when compared to the english dub.
Anyways to me its seems that some times they just do the dub for the sake of
doing it and adding no emotion in thier voices. its an argument that will get
bounced back one way and an other other and other. sometimes dub is gr8 but IMO
most times it could be done a hell of alot better
4 me is because it lose some part of the character "esense", because
mos modism like respect sufix got completly eliminated on the dubed version some
characters losse part of their atractive, 4 example a shy female sharacter that
add the -kun even wen refering 2 a close friend, that kind of thinks make a
character losse some of it personality wen dubed, but that is just my opinion.
I prefer subtitled anime, but when I watch a dvd I usually watch it about 3
times. Once in English, once in Japanese with subtitles, and again with
commentary or notes or whatever special feature the dvd has. I don't think there
is anything wrong with dubbing, but there is some meaning lost in translation,
and some things that just don't translate. My favorite example of this is in
Excel Saga when they visit america and they don't speak english well. In the
dubbed version Excel uses "Spanish and Ghetto". I thought it was funny
but it lost a lot in translation... In order to get the full meaning I believe
you have to speak the native language. Subtitles are the next best thing since
most of the origonal meaning is kept. But when dubbed, there are changes made to
make more sence to a western audience.
most of the time the english dub IS bad... that is a fact... but for games like
Lunar the Silver Star Story... that has been a great voice dubbed one... and
well... some of them change the music and the whole feel of it is gone... but
for ones that only change the voices... some of them sound stupid... and
sometimes... it's better to listen to the actual japanese and read the subtitles
so you can get the puns... or else you get stupid jokes... and americans can't
really explain the "sudden fall" of a character very well with voice
dubs... i mean anime has a lot of japanese culture
French-dubbed anime are in majority bad. Overplaying, bad playing. Lack of
emotions.
The few dubbed anime in english I've seen in english seem to standardized, and
lack too emotion, varieties...
But it can be really funny sometimes. I remember than once the french voice for
Yugi doesn't seem to believe what he was saying. Like "But what kind of
story am I playing ?"
Well i personaly like dubbed cause id rather not spend the entire movie reading
than watching and most original anime chars have high pitch voices. I dont feel
like hearing chalk boards.And the french suck at evrything so its okay.
I agree with the essence of the character post. A lot is lost listening to
dubs, and even only reading the subtitles. One of the biggest things for me is
what characters call each other (In love hina: Urashima, Urashima-san, Senpai,
Keitarou etc). How characters address each other in japanese shows a lot about
a character's feelings/relationship towards one another. Another reason is for
dialect, Oosakan is a very different speach pattern, and hearing a character
speaking in a brookland or southern accent to make a point that they speak
differently rubs me the wrong way.
I also enjoy the inflection in the Japanese voice tracks, most dubs the VAs
either speak monotoned or ungodly over-exagerated.
Also voice tallent recruited for the japanese track are usually very highly
trained (they have schools for it), where as American VAs are often self taught
or tutored. It really shows, compare an anime dub with a native english voice
track, american cartoons get all the good american voice actors.
Lastly the japanese track is what the creators intended them to sound like. I
wouldn't want to watch a chinese film dubbed, Seven Samurai dubbed, or even an
american film dubbed into another language.

he's right like Inu-Yasha it sounds like Koga has been smoking too much.either
way i don't like the english version of Inu-Yasha.but there is some really great
dubbed stuff like love hina and oh my goddess.but i am hoping they do at least a
decent job on Naruto but i highly doubt it because it's going to be english and
they are going to cut all the good stuff out because of it being on Cartoon net
work.

better dubbed than subbed... take 'Orphen' for instance, or the 'Tenchi Muyo'
series, or 'x' the series... but for a lot of the time, the dubbed voices are
just so far off that its quite hideous. I don't like 'Full Metal Alchemist'
dubbed voices nearly as much as the subbed, and the english voices for 'Gundam
Wing' actually made me wince... especially Relena's. *shudders*

Yes, I've heard that many times about FMA. I happen to really like Vic Mignogna
(Edward), though some make the argument that he sounds too old and jaded for a
fifteen year old. For me, that's what the character felt like - jaded-, and
although Paku Romi is a wonderful seiyuu, I thought Vic fit the role better.
As for the Gundam Wing voices, I loved Duo's english voice, but many others I
couldn't stand as well. For me it wasn't Relena, it was Hilde... *shivers*
Especially the one-episode extras, a lot were just awful.
I don't hate it but i don't like all dubs only some dubs are good. TO me in my
views people who haven't watched anime for like many years are the ones who are

well with the characters. I bought the Newtype USA issue to see the 1st ep, I
thought it would be in subbed or that I would have a choice but it was only
dubbed and oh how bad it sounded. The characters who's voices mad the character
soo loveable were gone and in its place was bad dubbing that made me cringe in
agony.
Well. let's say it's that people just prefer japanese voiceactors. And it's just
that japanese voices sound more... original. And then engilsh, swedish,
germanian, finnish and so on people screw up the voice acting.
Let's say... Final Fantasy: Unlimited, there in japanese voices for an example
Ai & Yu actually sound LIKE children, but then american/english people screw
it up by putting 30-years-old people to voiceact 12-years-old children.
And then. After you've seen something like swedish dubs of Sailor Moon or
finnish dubs of Hamtaro.
And then. I've got my own share of experiecnes on that while there are dubbing
there's also a great probability they'll get something wrong in there.And then:
They'll get to Finland through numerous of other countries. And then
translations get even worse by every dubbing.
And well... that's my share of wisdom about the hate of dubbing.
The voices of the english cast are not as talented as the japanese ones..
For example, the dubbed Kira from Gundam SEED really sounds GAY!!
Worse, the guy who plays Asuran also plays Martin Mystery. omfg. WTF.
Changing the names of the characters is another thing, its WRONG!
Bottomline, dubs KILL anime..
If you're a TRUE anime fan, you would respect the talented japanese cast and
watch subbed anime. Forget dubs for god's sake.
Dubbing in general sucks, that's why. An English film dubbed in Japanese would
probably be as terrible as an anime dubbed in English. It's not too terrible an
assumtion that most dubs should be avoided, because the creators obviously had
their native language in mind when they wrote the dialogue. That, and too often
dubbing is hampered by bad translation from the original script, resulting in
awkward expressions.
There're some nice dubs, of course, like Macross Plus. Even in the dreaded
Inuyasha it's not that bad; I rather like Sesshoumaru's and Kagura's English
voices.

Most dubbed anime have really bad voice actors, and dubbed anime usually aren't accurate from the japanese animes.
