Just wanted to know how many of you actually have techie jobs. I AM a techie(a.k.a. computer nerd) but in my area jobs in that field are scarce so I am in between tech jobs. :(

I'm not sure...probably most ppl just setup their own company...

I'm also a techie xD

Well I work giving tech support for computers, everything related to them !

I'm not sure what you mean by 'techie'. Is that IT, computer work in general, or anything technical?

If engineering is included, then you can count me in.

I program computer simulations for engineering applications. I think that fits what you're looking for, ne? ^_^

right now i work in tech support. soon i will be moving into repairing and troubleshooting computer systems. Then hopefully if everything works out i want to move into networking and advanced networking and get my CCNA sertification. Then after that by some inhumane stroke of luck when im 40+ years old i will go for CCNP certification. but i hear that is damn hard to obtain.

I've done tech support on and off at a large company since i was 16, and I'm graduating at Uni with an IS degree at the end of the month. Though I plan to do more study, I'll probably end up doing something IS related.

I always liked the idea of being a web developer/graphic designer, I've recently completed real work dissuading me from the idea. I suppose it's one thing to design for myself and another to design for someone else with something else in mind (or even worse with no idea of what they want). Oh and the lack of stable income kinda bites.

So I guess what I will be going for is a consulting job, hopefully through a graduate program or something.

I guess strictly speaking it's not techie in practice, but it does require a high degree of technical knowledge.

I'm an IT major in university right now. Dunno if "going to school" qualifies as a job. I do support for almost everyone I know now, and it sucks! Leave me alone!

One think I learned as a university graduate is if you want to do more hands on straight forward things like systems admin, the university is not the right place. Univerisites are more for research and theory aka software design, algorithms.

I had a great time at my university, but I did not like my CS major. I really wanted to do more hands on projects like design networks, manage tons of computers etc. I hate programming. Funny thing, my current job is in programming.

Why? Cause as a recent college grad you have to get ANYTHING that comes to for the experience!

I mostly just run around and fix peoples computers, sometimes they bring the computer to me, sometimes I go to them and fix the computer. Theres no real 40 hour week tech jobs around here though.

I do tech support , and trobleshooting how to remove difrent compents in the registry and other advanced areas and guid impecels on how to use diffrent tools. Prob a techie job alot of my coworkers i can speak to them about computers and im suprised they are nerds to lol

I used to be a full-time game developer, but then I moved into freelance. Now I am also a firefighter doing computers on the side.

I'm bachelor in computer science, but not really doing a tech job...
It's more marketing (Marketing Database Management)

What I'm planning to do is getting back to study (in the evenings) for master in cs or engineer in micro electronics. I'm bored with my current job.

i'm just a 1st yr computer engineer but i wanna work. is there any work that i can take while doing it at home? like c programming or making website and flash animations?

What you can do from home depends on what you want to do after graduating.

If you're into programming, try getting into some small open source projects, they mostly love a set of new hands and you can learn alot of this experience.

Making websites, well i would consider this more a hobb kind of thing. You can start by constandly rebuilding your homepage. When I started with mine, I totally reprogrammed it every 3-5 months... and by programming I don't talk Flash or HTML :) ... but getting paid as freelance didn't really work out for me.

The hardes part is practicing system engineering, since you'll need some additional hardware and a common server OS. You could do it by going all linux, but keep in mind that almost every company uses Windows als their primary OS. Try building a Network, and some central administration like a Win or NIS domain and play with it. That's how you really learn how it works. Maybe you can get some parttime TecSupport job... but you'll have to know the system before you can start to work.

i like using a computer, but i don't think i'll do a job with it

I do it and own my own company. But that industry sucks so I am also a firefighter.
