I need to do some upgrade in my CPU, and i'm not satisfied with the performance
of my cooler and AntiVirus. Anyone here knows the best coolers at sale these
days?
About AVs, some people says that Kaspersky is the best AV of the world. Is it
true? There aren't other good ones?
Depends what you need, and what AV you're already using, plus how your firewall
is configured. If you plan to put in high end parts into a small box you'll
probably need a heatsink or something. And it's hard to help with AV, ect unless
we know a bit about your system.
my AntiVirus is Norton Internet Security >.>
It works quite well, and you can customize the firewall...
I hope it helps ^_^
(Remember I don't know much )
Getting a third party cooler, depends on if you need it or not.
If you got a retail processor it should come with a stock HSF. These stock
HSF
are more than enough to cool your processor (that is if you don't do
any type of overclocking)
If you do overclocking (which does reduce the life of a processor and
voids warranty), then you can look into third party coolers.
Here is one that can be used on both platforms.
Assuming you have the latest platforms that is.
Intel 775 and AMD 754/939/940 product
Here is a review on it. review review#2 review#3
If you do extreme overclocking, then get watercooling.
They are expensive and can be a hassle to install, but
when you have it up and running, their silent.
The downside with water cooling is, there may be chances that
a leak make break and if that happen, you will not be happy about it.
For AV, it all depends on how much protection you need.
If you just want a antivirus then get the stand alone antivirus software, but
if you want more than antivirus, then look into their secuirty suite
products.
Well folks, actually i've an AMD Duron 1.2 GHZ processor with 384 MB RAM. My
firewall is the one that comes with Windows X P and my AV is AVG Free Edition. I
want some real-time protection against virus, xploits and spyware in
general.
I'm really grateful to everyone who helped until now. With the informations
about my system, you have any other comments/suggestions? Thanks in advance.
Most antivirus should have one, but there isn't such a thing called real-time
protection. It up to you to use common sense to always scan a file before open
or execute it. Scan for viruses on a daily basis and you cannot always count on
auto updates. So therefore check for virus updates manually.
As for spyware, just becareful on what you do on the internet.
Such as for those messages where is says "You have tons of errors, click
here to fix them".
Once you click on it, instead of fixing your computer, it will actually be
installing malware and other malicious programs, turning your "PC into one
of their mass
computer zombies!"
Kaspersky is really a top quality product and considered by many people to be
the best available but in my book it comes 2nd to nod32 which I believe to be
the best. Stay away from products like norton or McAfee. lunagata, no offence
but norton firewall is the worst firewall ive ever seen and you can bearly
control a thing on it(last version I touched was 2k3 but from what i hear...many
many times...its only gotten much worse).
A security suite can be good to have everything in a single package but the only
thing I find thats worth paying for is a AV. Everything else you can get better
for free.
Dont get caught up with that "we protect from this, this and spaware"
a AV is a anti-VIRUS for a reason, anything else is just for marketing and it
should not be trusted to protect against those things
You should upgrade your PC because AMD Duron is quite old.
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ venice core 2.2 GHZ
ASUS A8NE
and upgrade other parts that you need.. ^__^
Yes akito, i'm trying to upgrade my CPU little by little. AMD ROX, so i think
i'll continue using their products. But
what motherboard is better, Soyo Dragon or ASUS?
I already used the Norton package, woot. Result? 1 month later my CPU was
totally messed up. :P Some friends of mine uses NOD32 and they don't stop
bragging about it. But AVG is really bad too?
You should really invest in a dual core processor
such as the AMD Athlon X2.
For motherboard I would choose Asus because their boards are mostly rock solid
and stable.
Unless you can wait a bit longer until the AM2 comes out.
AM2 is a new technology from AMD that uses DDR2 instead of DDR
and its socket has changed from socket939 to socket940.
The new AM2 socket940 processors has been changed to prevent users
to accidentally insterting it in the other socket940 originally used in the
Opteron processors.

I think you should really wait for AMD to release their new socket AM2 around
the 2nd quarter of this year and then hop onto that platform around the 3rd or
4th quarter. Instead of spending somemore money on your current and relatively
dead-end platform.
But if you really need a new cpu, depending on your motherboard, try getting one
of the axp series of cpus to hold you over till socket AM2.
About your motherboard question, I've never used soyo's before so I can't really
comment on them. I think asus boards are sort of overpriced, but well you get
for what you pay, they're quite good. Personally I think abit boards better,
mostly due to their price (compared to asus, they're cheap) and bios
options.
For AV programs, I believe kaspersky is the best and for free AV's AVG would be
the most recommended. Also I'll stay FAR away from any norton AV's or programs,
they're really big memory hogs, combine that and relatively fair detection
rates. There are just many other better AV programs out there.
For AV software look no further than Grisoft's AVG Free. I've used it for more
than 2 years now and it's been flawless. Both Norton and McAfee have become so
bloated over the years that they are pretty much doing more harm than good on
any computer unfortunate enough to be running them.
AVG Free and Sygate Personal Firewall make a nice threat protection combination
IMO.
Sygate? I've heard of this firewall before, and it was well-rated. Fortunately
i'm not facing any problems with my CPU anymore, but i'll have this firewall in
mind.
I can hold with my current equipment until september or so, i think. That AM2
tech looks really nice, so i'll try to catch up on it next semester. Thanks for
the help, folks!

Add your answer here! Every thought is important!

Okay tiki223, thanks! I'll follow your tips.

more info on AM2
here
As for Soyo don't even bother, I've just went to check out their site and they
got no new mobo for the socket939 processors.
DDR2? That means this thing doubles the performance of the DDR or i'm taking it the wrong way?
So ASUS have monopolized the motherboard market... good to know. Hence, i'll go with the flow. Thanks again, tiki!
DDR2 uses less power than DDR and is able to reach higher speeds.
DDR uses 2.6v
DDR2 uses 1.8v
Asus did not monopolize the motherboard market, there are others out there
such as MSI, Gigabyte, Epox, DFI and others.

Abit is no more. In other words there is no more Abit.
USI bought Abit.

Abit got bought? aww, they were among my fav mobos
Ah well, for a 64 mobo, your choice will be somewhat influenced by your cooling
For watercooled, don't get a passively cooled mobo, else there won't be enough airflow around the smaller components
But a fan cooled system, you can pretty much use any mobo you want
I use Evga's sli version right now n i've had no probs, though i really wanna get the Asus crossfire board, i just like ati better than nvidia
