Hi guys! Im actually a doujin artist but i really want to learn how to make
wallie. But the thing is i don't know where to start from. I saw a lot of
tutorial that teaches me how to make wings, cloud etc but i don't even know the
basic! For example, the size of a standard wallie and where can i find all the
pretty stock images. Im currently using photoshop CS to do all my art.
Apparently im still sucks at using it although i did use it . Actually my real intention is to improve my doujin through learning the
skills of making a wallie becaus i always have troubles making my doujin's
background.
I appreciate all advice/comment/reply, thanks a lot!
Make them yourself! Just think of an idea, if you don't have an idea then look
at other peoples' work for inspirations (of course don't just copy straight
out!). Then try to make your vision, if you find your knowledge is limited, look
for tutorials to help you make it. A great site for Photoshop tutorials is Good Tutorials which is searchable and
you can usually find anything you need there. Also check out the tutorial thread
at the top.
You will learn techniques by doing this as you go, which is the best way to
learn.
Ow, I'm a bit late, but I haven't seen this thread of yours before
I think no one mentioned brushes... Those are really useful, and you can make
many many things with them, sometimes stock photos can be limited, because if
you imagined what type of sky or grass you want to make for the scan (or your
doujin ) you can't always find similar to it, but you can make it with
brushes, they're really easy to use
There are many sites with great brushes, the biggest source of brushes I know is
DeviantART but I bet you already knew
it
Whenever I get stuck for ideas for a generic background (not scenery), I just
play some music in Windows Media Player or iTunes (yes, the player matters, I'll
explain why) and randomly printscreen nice shots of the visualiser. Then I'll
mess around with transparency to get some ideas for nice patterns and such.
liberia-sama and i are in the same box i guess, cuz i just got adobe photoshop
*which is said to be the most high rated photoshop for manga-artists*- and i
don't know how to use it COMPLETELY
i also have problems with backgrounds...that's why my wallpaper always ends up
with gradients and such...want to learn how to make a scenery background...can
someone help?
As chisana said, you should use brushes. When I make a scenery background I use
a lot of brushes. Of course thats how I do it and I just started learning
photoshop not too long ago. Stock photos are ok but to just use it for the whole
background, well I don't think that would look as good anyways.
no one can teach you how to make a wallpaper, but you can learn.
confused?
making a wallpaper is an artistic thing; and therefore no one can teach you
that. However, you can learn HOW to use photoshop (or your graphic editing
program of choice) to the fullest of its ability.
My advice to you: grab an image (make sure it's a decent size, fits nicely on
your monitor, you can see all sides of it at any time, decent quality, etc.) and
then load it up in photoshop. then, go through EVERY TAB and use EVERY FILTER,
effect, reduction/expansion, brush, blend.. EVERYTHING onthe image. as many
times as you need. remember which ones you like, then experiment. Looking at
tutorials can help, but i've always found that with tutorials i've taken away
more the techniques and less the final product away from them.

Well, man... for starters you gotta extract a good scan using the Polygon thing tool, eraser or the Pen tool.
Then there's making the background... now there are various methods to that, but I'll leave someone else to do the show and tell.
i would like to learn how to improve too.
i have no problems at extraction of characters and stuff, but i don't know where to find good stock BGs.

the problem is, when us wallie n00bs don't know where to find good stock BGs, we end up brushing the whole BG ourselves. taihen-desu...
