Hi, i'm a new Linux user since last weekend and it is great!!
I have
Mandrakelinux, what is your distribution or version or how it is telled
Voted for other at the moment i am using Lindows Developers Edition, but I tried out Debian, Gentoo, Suse an d Redhat and they are all good distibutions.
:)
Gentoo. The best distro I have yet to find
i've used it a few times... i'm planing on installing it on my mp3 server box once i get a new hd, so that i can back up my mp3s, since my xp install on it broke a month or so back. i think i'll be putting gentoo on it, since i'll be able to learn more doing that... which will be useful for later.
I want to get red-hat, but its not free (and i have a no- budget budget)so i tried debian. however, im stuck on 56k and will never finish this downlaod in 700 years.....well maybe a nonstop 1-week download but...u get the picture
Get Fedora then if you like to have redhad. It's free version of redhat for home users. Besides, if you want debian, you only need the first CD to install it. Not all.
i use fedora... its more stable but less games
i didn't vote because i have used and installed within the last 2 months all of them - and liked all of them (though suse was the easiest to work on - on my laptop) Its come a long way in the last year and i'm looking foward to the desktop improvments with in the next year :-)
I use Gentoo
I'm still using Suse 7.2 on one of my machine, although I don't use it often as I don't have the need for the Linux environment. I like its look and feel though, but I'm afraid due to the nature of my work I am happy to sit with Win2K.
I think I remember Sun doing a front end of Linux, don't think it was free though. Anyone tried it?
I like Damn Small Linux. It's light, easy on the older hardware, but powerful enough to do almost anything. Live-bootable, installable, expandable.
check it out. Damn Small Linux
I also use Gentoo, a source-based distro. I like having easy access to the source for the programs I use, and being able to merge builds I had to modify cleanly into my system. No need for me to worry about incompatible binary versions. Plus, Gentoo keeps up quickly with new developments.
I've got Debian that I use on VMWare.
I like to use Suse 9.1 Professional. The Personal version is free for download and it does come with a lot of stuff. However for $89 for professional, you get so many programs and support, it's well worth the money. If I was M$ I would be scared right now.
I'm using Gentoo now, but voted for Debian. Slackware, also, is great with it's simple startup scripts etc. It only lacks a donwload-thingy such as emerge and apt-get.
I've got gentoo; its my first linux box, and have been using it for a couple months now. I like it, except for the lack of some programs, like a really good vector prog. Also games, need games! But w/ gentoo, you get complete control over your box, and things as up-to-date as you care to be. Big thumbs up!
I'm using Fedora Core 2, I've been using Linux since Red Hat Linux 8, and I'd just like to contest that there are less games. On this Fedora system (which I am on right now) I have Unreal Tournament, Neverwinter Nights (all the addons), Heavy Metal f.a.k.k. 2, Descent 1,2, and 3, America's Army(http://americasarmy.com), Doom 1, 2, and final (and soon will be Doom3 once I get a new box), Scorched3D(http://scorched3d.co.uk/), Stepmania(http://stepmania.com), HomeworldSDL, FreeSpace 2, emulators for every system, and lots of little pass-the-time games, like Chromium. There are other big games that I don't have, such as the newer Unreal Tournaments, Unreal 2, any of the Quake games. There is no shortage of games for Linux, or Fedora in particular. Fedora Core 3 is on the way, folks, and I recommend checking it out if you are into Linux, it's setting up to be a big one.
Gentoo, it gives tons of control, but I use SuSE 9.1 on my laptop and testing computer Both great Distros. My two favorite, you gotta love the colored and graphical console
Well, I'm not a linux user... but I am a *NIX user.
So... can I
still vote? >.> <.<
i voted "other"... I use FreeBSD...
I've got Mandrake with Gnome, it roxx... :-)
I used to use alot of redhat, but now I've migrated over to debian, but my fav Unix based system is OpenBSD
