In Scotland, the smoking ban in public places has come into effect:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/4845260.stm

I think so. I'm sick of public smokers. They should have no right to impose their fumes on non-smokers. Non-smokers do not want to suffer the effects of the dangerous chemicals that they can inhale through passive smoking.

Quote: BBC Radio's Five Live programme discovered that about 21% of smokers surveyed in Scotland planned to ignore the ban.

I hope that these people are fined and in high amounts, too.

Here's an arguement against this ban:

Quote: The group's Scottish spokesman, Neil Rafferty, said: "The ban will do nothing to improve the health of the nation, but it will give a warm glow to those who enjoy telling others what to do.

"The anti-smoking fanatics will use the ban to victimise and stigmatise smokers even further.

"They have used abusive and dishonest methods to make smokers feel bad about themselves, even comparing smokers to heroin addicts."

It will improve health standards. No more passive smoking. Us non-smokers do not have to inhale their products.

A smoker should be capable of holding out a few hours to get home to smoke. Only those who ignore this ban will get victimised and it'll be because of their poor self-control and lack of decency in a public area.

Smokers can be comparable to any drug addict. They are diminishing their own health to satisfy an urge.

So, what are your views on this smoking ban?

In my country a similar law has been made; you can't smoke at public places like schools, universities, malls, etc. Also, bars and restaurants had to choose to allow smoking or not.
I agree with it because I hate cigarretes smell and I don't see why I have to put up with other people second hand smoke.

I don't mind what people do in their houses, if they want to smoke till their lungs fall out, it's ok with me; just don't make me smell it.

For once, Fluxinator, you and I agree. We don't have a public smoking ban here in Texas yet, and I have to wait on people constantly who breathe smoke in my face. Worse yet when it's the fumes of those nasty "flavored" cigars. Smoke and strawberries don't mix well, folks.

In point of fact, all signs point to my having developed asthma because of the constant exposure to such smoke. I get the test results next week. And I've never smoked a day in my life.

In Holland they passed the same law a year ago, and it sure helps a lot. A downpoint is that they are making special "smokingpoints" now in public buildings. So the problem is still there, but only centralized.

see bweb NJ is ahead of you we have a public smoking ban, it is going to come into affect soon i think in a month or so it was just signed by the good Govener John Corzinei belive. Tobbaco companies keep lobbying conngress and that is why we haven't had a national public smoking ban.

I would like to give my "not even remotely" humble opinion. I'm a tax payer. That means I (as do you) cover the healthcare costs of smoking. I really really resent it. Public smoking is banned in my area and I really appreciate it (as does my asthma). However, as I work in oncology, it has come to my attention the tax payers are subsidizing the healthcare costs of many people who abuse themselves physically. I don't like paying for excessive drinkers, smokers, and drug addicts. I figure if you smoke you should be written off the assistance roles. If you want to commit suicide of the course of twenty years, that is fine with me, but don't come asking me to pay to try and save your dumb*ss.

Thanks You!

If I remember correctly, a similar ban will come into effect here too, soon. I agree with the ban, definitely. Besides the discomfort, second-hand smoke can also harm other non-smokers. I don't see why non-smokers have to pay the price for smokers. It is their decision to smoke. I respect that, although I don't agree with it. But at least don't inconvience/irritate others by it.

Of course, I sympathize with those smokers who sincerely want to quit the habit but cannot control themselves to stop. They could be given a second chance in some rehab centre or something. But anyway, I agree with the ban.. it will take care of the rest who are inconsiderate enough to smoke in public.

It is up to the states to make their determination as to what they will or won't allow. That is the essnce of self-determination, and of Ronald Reagan's famous policy of "Vote with your feet."

Let the smokers congregate somewhere and vote to keep that place full of their harmful vapors. Virginia ought to be a good place, seeing as they grow a good deal of the tobacco in the first place. We'll avoid that state, and vote to keep ours smoke free.

And the issue is before our legislature right now.

Until tobacco is an illegal substance, I will smoke when and where I want. The state I live in has already passed a law than you can't smoke less than 50 feet from the entrance of a public building. I would be fine with that, except for the fact that they put the ashtrays about two feet from the door. I don't smoke to impose on others who do not smoke, so they have no right to impose on me.

On a side note, cigarette tax is about 1.50 USD per pack, this is 15.00 USD of money per carton that goes straight to the government. In 2005, it was estimated 3.786 billion cartons of cigarettes sold. That brings the total amount of tax dollars accrued from cigarettes to about 57 billion USD for that year. Claiming that your angry that your tax dollars are being wasted on smokers is pointless. Especially considering self-inflicted health issues due to smoking is not financially covered by anyone but the smoker.

A friend told me the other day that ten times as many people die per year due to falling coconuts than shark attacks. Turns out this was a valid study that triggered a crusade against coconut trees. Tourist locations around the world began hacking down coconut trees. The point is that people will start a crusade against anything out of fear of death or loss of money, regardless of how stupid it is.

Zepphyre, you have made a decision to smoke. Okay. However, when you smoke in public, your fumes will effect anyone near you. Anyone walking past you to try and get somewhere will take in the effects. They do not want to smoke. They aren't imposing themselves on you because they want a healthy life and they don't want to take the long way round to get from A to B.

I am okay with smoking at home. Although my Mother is a smoker (which isn't great - I have asthma too), I have to accept that she will have to at points satisfy that urge that smoking creates. I just hope she does it where it will not effect anyone else.

Yes, but the deaths associated with tobacco are far greater in number than those associated with coconut induced injury. And falling coconuts do not harm people they don't hit.

We have a ban on smoking at bars and restaurants. I think thats more than enough...

"Until guns are illegal, I shall fire bullets wherever I want."

You don't seem to care if you hurt people. That makes you a bad person.

Generally, drug prohibition is both astonishingly illiberal and mind-blowingly stupid. But prohibitions on affecting others by means of your drug use are completely natural and proper in any non-anarchist society.

I dislike places full of smoke, I really get angry when someone smokes next to me in a restaurant and I would never kiss a smoker.
Two friends of my family already died of smoking and If you are smart, you never will start doing it. It's expensive and you hurt other people with this.
But shall you ban smokers? Yes, from all places where you can hurt children, like trains or restaurants. Shall you ban smokers from all public places?
Not sure- Just putting laws on something will not make the problems disappear.
We have to protect our children, so it's good thinking of smoke-free areas all over the word…

I hate people who smoke...it's disgusting!

I think that the ban on smoking in public places in Britain hasn't been properly thought out. If your friends leave the pub to have a cigarette then you're going to go out and join them, leading to your being outside for no reason and likely leading to your starting to smoke [much worse for you than second hand smoke]. If you have a group of five and say two go out to have a fag, when they return they're out of touch with the conversation and don't know how it got to its current point.
I've notice the massive decline in the number of people in most of the pubs I've entered, mostly caused by the fact that those who smoke have to go out into the col to smoke and thus stay home. As many of the people go to the pub are friends with a number of smokers, they tend not to go out as their friends wont be in the pub. This leads to a massive loss of custom for almost all bars except those soulless chain bars [eg Weatherspoons].

All I have to say is that we have this type of ban in France (well, the full ban for bars/restaurants will only come into effect in January but most of those places are already smoke-free) and I think it's awesome.

I don't really agree with what the person above said about non-smokers being forced into going outside. I honestly like taking a break (either from work or from a meal/party) and since some people are already going outside to smoke, I just join them with a drink or cup of coffee, I've never felt the need to start smoking.

The UK government passed a law to ban smoking in public places on 1 july 2007

i do have to say that i support the government's move for a smoking ban as i can't stand cigarette fume at all

on top of that i work in a restaurant therefore its nice to get rid of the annoying smoke where it will suffocate me. the same goes to when i go to a pub and drink, i dont have to tolerate the smoke

on the other hand, some of the customers use this excuse to go out and smoke and left the restaurant without paying

It's that way where I live, personally I smoke cigarettes, but I have never liked smoking indoors so it doesn't really bother me. The only time I dislike it is when I can't smoke in nightclubs.

all bullcrap...I can get it in restaurants (the only place it´s banned here in my state), but not in bars and nightclubs...it´s a place to have a few drinks, chill with mates, and have a cigarette. I´d be ticked off if I had to go out everytime I want a cigarette...especially when your drinking lol...I can suck down a whole pack of smokes pretty quick when beer is involved lol.

and plus, there´s no proof anyone has died/gotten cancer from second hand smoke...

Don't bump old threads.
