The real question is why do you never hear white people use race card? Why
everytime an altercation between black and white, do we assume somehow racism to
be a factor, or at least the blacks assume?
Clarence Thomas is someone I respect, in that he is logical, articulate and
sensible, not Jesse Jackson, who just recently blamed that Racism being the
factor in Barry Bond's steriods controversy, YEAH!
Quote by XxRagnarokxX88Another
thing is assimilation. Though it's possible for all of us to work with each
other, respect one another, and co-exist, we are who we are and to completely
assimilate is impossible. Hispanics, afromericans, Irish, gypsy, whites, all
people are different and the melting pot can only go so
far.
Yeah, I mean, look at England, we never really assimilated properly, people
still have definite ideas of whether they're a Celt, or an Angle, or a Saxon, or
a Norman.
Oh, wait. We don't. We've all turned completely into one big culture of
"English",

Come on......I KNOW that you know better than this.
lol, the event which I assume you are referrring to, occured over 150 years
ago
So, why is it still relevant?
Because racism IS still real. However, the point of this thread was to point out
that all races can be racist.
This Congresswoman claims racism, but if she had been an average citizen and not
an elected official, then striking that cop would have earned her jail time.
Instead, she gets up and starts calling the cop a racist for doing his job.

Bingo.
She failed to show responsibility on her part. If she had the proper credentials
(which she didn't have any) This wouldn't have escalated into this. If she would
have went through the detectors, explained that she forgotten her identification
and have someone else identify her or simply went back home and got it (who is
going to question her being late), none of this racism would be an issue.
However, all of this is doing is making everyone look stupid all over
again.
The cop was responsible for doing his job. She should be responsible for doing
hers, forgetting your identification ISN'T responsible.
I have to say that reading the responses to this thread, I've seen a lot of
latent hostility to the African American community, which I did not expect.
It disturbs me, actually, because in the end, it validates what some of the more
hot-headed, and indeed, racist members of that community, have been saying all
along.
There are members of the African American community who will cry
"racism" at the drop of a hat, and this Congresswoman is one of them.
Now, I don't believe that they speak for the whole of the African American
populace.
But the sort of ire I've seen lurking in the posts on this thread, it's
ammunition for those activists. It reaffirms their viewpoint that ALL of the
caucasian community is racist.
The opinions of those who express such hostility are not the whole of the
caucasian voice, but they are held up to the African American community by
certain biased individuals as examples of the "racism" of the White
community.

I think you just explained my reasoning yourself, right? Nothing will get done
this way.
However, to answer your question. Racism is not real, it is more of a conception
or a belief that people held in their subconscious mind. I do not think you can
call "South was racist before civil war" because it was the common
practice there at that time.
Of course, to promote tensions among two groups of people, the easiest way would
be to depict some incident between them and portray it as a hate crime. People
being as helpless as they are, immediately buy into this concept. (Look at what
happened in Germany after Hitler took over). I wonder how much has people been
misled by the contemporary media on this issue? I cannot help but wonder. Of
course, that also explains the congresswoman incident you described
earlier
The South have been racist BEFORE and AFTER the civil war. And in many parts, it
still is. You can't possibly assume that racism doesn't exist.....You need to
really take a road trip. There are places a black person still can't go to, in
fact, anyone is isn't white, can't go either. Just because you have been
"accepted" doesn't mean you are. There are many guys in my unit who
never seen a black guy before till the joined the Army! You don't think by any
chance that they have been witness to some or many forms of racism? Or how about
blacks who are highly qualified for a position in a work force, only turned down
the position so that a white relative, who is less qualified can be given the
job? I have been in many of those situations......
Like I said, you need to get out more.....and not to the local mall either.

As a matter of fact, there are many chat rooms that are "white only"
Ares had such rooms, Yahoo is another. Now that My Space.com and blogs has
became so popular, I am sure there are more pro-racism boards more than ever.
There are people who are afraid to speak on such matters publicly for fear of
retaliation. What better way than to use the internet to spread such ignorance
today?

There are counterexamples as well, one difference being they do it in public,
instead of resorting to internet. You never see a scholarship that says
"white student only", but many that says "blacks only". Why
is that? Is it not racial preferences, and even more, public display of of
it.
In fact, my college, one of the IVY League schools, have a dorm that accepts
black/latino residence only. Is it segration, similar to the ones in the 50's.
So, is it qualified to say that administration is at fault here?
Hey, if I am turned down (I am asian) for a white person for the job, so what?
You are always going to think you are more qualified than others. Companies have
to choose between many qualified applicants. If the companies do not want you,
they would not even waste their time and money to fly you in and interview you.
Instead of looking for those reasons (like you mentioned) as to why they did not
get a job, maybe theyneed to realize that they have to do better during the
interviews (for example, enthusiasm, delinquincy, humbleness, professional),
etc.
Those scholarships you mentioned are aimed towards blacks because the majority
of them do not go to college. It's their way of providing incentives for people
other than whites to pursue higher learning, hence the scholarships for a
specific race or color.
As to the special residences, that could be considered segregation, but if I
remember correctly, during my high school days, the black students would always
sit at their own lunch table. It's like they prefer segragation if they're not
being forced to be segregated. You can blame whoever set up the dorms like that,
but in reality, they seem willingly be segregated...

Well, I am confused about what you are saying here. First of all, who is
"their", second of all, is it right?
If there could be a all-black dorm, why not an all-white dorm or an all Asian
one, considering the black population in my college is less than 10%, White and
Asians account for as much as 80%
I met caucasians come from different areas in US at my University, none of them
are racist.
totally agree with liger
ya need to go out of your comfort zone and talk to people around the place(even
outside ur country)
over here in australia an intresting event happened recently to really good
friend of mine.
an elderly white woman on a train told him" why dont you go back were you
came from?"
now he is full blooded indian(prety dark one i might add) but born here, on top
of that ALL white people were immigrants. So mate tell me racism doesnt
exist.
Also IF racism doesnt exist people(politicians in particular) wouldnt make those
statements. because if there was absolutely no backing for it people (bulicly)
would "set them straight"
one thing i notice about ur logic is "wacked"
remember that a war was fought over the right of certain races to exist 60 years
ago. and america 45 years ago was segregated and australia 30 years ago was
"white only"
you were saying something about racism being a metal state of black/asian and
other minorities?
Quote by pepeoyou were saying something
about racism being a metal state of black/asian and other
minorities?
No, I am saying that racism is a perception people resort to when judging an
event.
In your example above, could it be that white grandma is talking to some other
person, or merely referring to his home. Your friend has this perception that
she is being a racist, why? Did the grandma tell her that she is in fact a
racist? Why assume that is the case?
The event you listed are distant past already. My uncle lives in Australia and
what do you think of that? Clearly it means that Australia is no longer
"white only"
If anyone likes to read (anything other than chat forums) you should pick up a
book called Mapping Human History by Steve Olson. I had to read it this semester
for my English 302 class. It is a great book and brings to light our current
understanding of how humans came about and how they somehow prevailed over
Neandertal possibly because of the ability to form language, etc. It traces
migratory paths from Africa with Mitochondrial Eve through Asia, Europe, back
into Africa, etc, and explains that racism is unfounded because we are all the
same people. Black people have so much white ancestry, white people have so much
black ancestry, and same goes with everyone with everyone else, asian, hispanic,
middle eastern. A very good read, indeed
What can we do about racism?
Differences make people act a certain way...hence we have media that can be a
bit racist and stereotypes that supposedly define a race. There's just nothing
we can do about it, but resist it despite it being everywhere.
oh man, i am so sick of racist people. i cant wait for our generation to take
over. we seem so much better than this last one. we are less racist and more
cool.
but seriously, racism is so old. we should turn from racism to the control of
third world countries. they are totally crapping up this world. we need to get
over and stop them from destroying their countries resources and smogging it up.
racism is old. lets move on and hate something new.
