A couple of initial attempts at creating wallpapers that were, unfortunately, not accepted. Yes, they are extracted images placed over top of photographic backgrounds - that were personally taken (not scrounged from other sources).

At any rate, I thought I'd be generous and share them - see below:

- Murrue with the comment "What are you doing with that camera!" http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g111/dhewetson/murrue003b.jpg

- Murrue and Mwu enjoying a romantic cruise with the comment "I hope you're enjoying yourself" -

Comments and ideas for improvement are welcome.

Hello...
the scan quality of the first one is really poor. The background photo is really sharp... so that creates a weird effect. However if you want your wallpapers not deleted I'd recommend you to leave the photographic backgrounds... You might also have to improve your skills on extraction of scans... are you using the pen tool already? It works really well for it... because right now you can still see white edges on the outside of the scans.
But you sound quite happy with photographic backgrounds... so I am actually not sure whether you want to change this "technique".
If you don't vector scans they should be in an very good quality...
I hope my comment was of some help...

Thanks for your constructive criticism. You make a good point about the Murrue image where the background is sharper than the foreground - and the wierd effect that has. I should have realised that to focus on the inserted character the photograph should be blurred a bit to become more realistic. The original scan of Murrue was not sourced from Minitokyo (and most likely wouldn't have made the grade if it had been). In this case it was a multi-image digital capture from the DVD (episode 19, I think). The captured image was then extracted using pen and brush tools at 400% or so; and tried to clean up glaring artefacts with colour matching, bucket fills and brush/pen work. Obviously not good enough in this case. As for the backgrounds, I definitely prefer photography as much of the challenge is actually finding and taking the right shot to work appropriately with the source image.

hmm, the first one, Murrue looks kinda pixilated/blurry. I think that's usually what happens with screencaps. You could try vectoring it (because I really like that expression :D ).

Like Regenbogen said, the photographic background doesn't seem to fit with the anime image. I think it's because the styles are so different (with anime images having simple cell-shading, and photos having complex shading and sharpness.) You could try airbrushing a bg based on the photo.

As for the second one, I think the idea is cool. but again, the foreground and background styles are a bit mismatched. For this one, I think since the background isn't as sharp as the other one, you can try blurring/softening Mwu and Murrue. That'll take away the sharp edges of the image a bit.
