Hey I was just wondering who all the Linux users are out there, or if I strangly
happen to be the only one and everyone else just supports the Microsoft Empire.
I Don't use Linux, yet I do not support the Microsoft Empire.
I just needed a pc with toiletwares to do my work. Because it is cheaper than a
mac,
which I preffer over Microsnot. Linux however, never had it. How is it?
I heard you had to keep a whole partition available just to load it up? Thats a
bit sucky.
I might be wrong. anyway thats my opinion
That is good that you don't support the Empire. Macs are much better especially
if your doing artwork type things. Linux is great I do absolutly everything
with it. And well since it is an entirly different OS it requires its own
partition, in my case it requires 3 Swap Boot and Root file system, though if my
firt HD had more space I would assign it a few more Partitions.
I'm using Windows XP Pro, but that's a cracked copy and I copy it to everyone
else, thus showing Bill the finger. And no, they won't get me, weak laws here
I'm using Windows XP Pro, but it a pirated edition, in another one of my
partitions i use mandrake linux, BEOS, and another OS in my system, to try them
as well...
Hey my copy of XP is also Priated. But I use Slackware most of the time, I
tried Mandrake and didn't really like it, and I have used RedHat a lot though
they have switched to Fedora. And I have never Used BEOS but it still uses the
bash shell so I don't really see a need to learn it.
Quote by dustinI use Debian Linux. I also
have legal XP pro. The reason why i also use windows is that there are some
things which linux cannot do.
Debian eh! I was thinking of switching to that when I was tired of RedHat, but
sources pointed me towards slackware:). I also use XP but its not really legal.
And I find Linux and do pretty much anything windows can, it just takes some
prompting:).
I've wanted to use linux for a while, I'm looking at trying to mess around with
linux or FreeBSD after the end of the semester in my free time. Till then I
using WinXp Home and 98se.
Quote by recca I have Mandrake 9.1 but
Internet won't work under it so I don't use it much.
.
Really the internet doesn't work eh! The only internet trouble I have had under
Linux has been with RedHat 8, Though now I just connect with kppp and
everything works great. Though I have had little experiance with Mandrake, I
didn't really like it too well.
Quote by LimalityI would use Linux if i
had my own Pc system (which is not the case at the
moment)
This is why we dual boot ,
unless of course you don't have the hd space available
Wil I be persecuted because I prefer the memmory errors and deffencies in basic
performance in Windows 2000 because i have never learned open source? BTW is
that hard?
no you wont be persecuted:) I actually prefer 2000 over XP. And learning a Unix
based OS isn't too hard you just need to be willing to put in the time for tech
support, in fact such releases as Mandrake and Suse are designed for those who
are switching over from windows, they are easiest to learn and manage, and have
less overhead. Plus there aren't a lot of config files you have to run through.
On the Other end there is Slackware and Gentoo which require that you basicly
set everything up yourself, and require a lot of time effort and forum support
browsing. It all depends on the time and effort you are willing to put into
it.
i have Knoppix and RedHat 9 but i haven't even used them. hehehe. it's just
too different for me. for first timers, linux appears to be like win 3x. but
then again i'm taking an OS classes at college that deals with RedHat so i got
no choice. damn it's a hassel trying to learn most of the command line stuff.
I don't find anything wrong with Windows 2000/XP, but I don't find it right to
be pirating the software. I use Windows XP Pro (2 legal copies), but for
anything besides gaming, I'm in Gentoo Linux (2.6.5 kernel, blah blah).
And Linux isn't very hard to learn. I suggest you stay away from Mandrake if you
actually want to learn about Linux, and I think if you want to learn, you use
Slackware, Debian, or Gentoo. Fedora's not bad either, and SuSE is good
too.
I've never encountered problems with XP/2000 though, I've had comps up for a
year without rebooting.

heheh I love knoppix it has saved my life so many times, and as for RedHat 9
well since they have reached EndOfLife I suggest you switch, at leaste to
Fedora. And the command line can be a pain sometimes, even though I live by it,
I don't know how I ever functioned without it. The only reason it is somewhat
difficult to learn is that it has 600+ commands.
And I agree with Animefan stay away from Mandrake, I think I only used it for
like less than a day. Suse is not bad you just have to get past there special
YAST sytem :P, as for me I stick to slackware and installing from source
tarballs, the way its supposed to be done

Nah, it looked like that years ago. These days the desktop enviroments looks
same as in windows too.Well, not the same but great. Besides, they can be
customized the like you want.
Yes that is true dustin, they did look kind of corny in the past, but now with a
million custuomizable options, such as Icons, Themes, and not to mention about
30 window managers to choose from. You can make you desktop look like MacOS to
Windows XP plus a billion combinations inbetween.
i know for a fact that Linux isn't a bad OS at all. there only 1 thing and it's
called getting use to. i even heard that it's better than Windows especially
for network security in the upcoming years.

If you get Photoshop running under one of the *nixes lemme know.

Maybe I will try Mandrake 10.
I only use Windows XP Home Edition, legal...
You just can't play certain games with linux. That is oen of the reasons i use windows too.
You just propably need to install network card driver or modem/isdn driver, depending what kind of connection to the internet you have.
