Just thought I made a thread giving tips to the people who wanna or just become a waller. ^_^

1. Spend time on it
Always spend time on your wallpaper. Even if you have been working for 4-5 hours, unless its finished, don't stop. Some people even spent almost a week to finish 1 wallpaper to perfection. Don't rush when making em and spend as much time as you can.

2. Tutorials
Look for tutorial if you don't know how to make something. there's a lot of tutorial out there that teaches heck alot of stuff. here's a thread on Photoshop tutorial sites. http://forum.minitokyo.net/showthread/13/

3. Ask for opinion.
If you happen to know someone who have been a waller for some time, ask for their opinion and fixed whatever is necessary. If you don't, get into MT's IRC channel and ask for opinion there. [#minitokyo@irc.rizon.net]

4. Set as desktop wallpaper first
This is what I always do. Set the wallpaper you just made to your desktop wallpaper. Sit back and stare it for a few minutes. see if there is anything that is need to be fixed. this is a must do since when the wallpaper is set to desktop, you can see the wallpaper more clearly then viewing it in Photoshop or a browser.

5. Practice makes perfect
As it says, practice makes perfect. this is very true especialy when it comes to exraction.

6. Don't be satisfied too quick with what you've done
Some people when they've done a few cool effects, they're already satisfied with it. Don't. Alwayz looks for a way to improve your wallpaper even more even if its just the smallest detail.

7. Dont be like this. "I'm bored.. Why don't I just wall something?"
Don't wall if you don't have a mood for it. Though the result might be good, there is a possiblity that you wallpaper will look as boring as you are.

8. Inspiritaion.
Look for an inspiration when you wanna wall something. not a must but it helps. looks at your surrounding, the sky, or even just look around at other people's wallpaper to get some inspiration.

9. Don't give up
Don't give up if you can't make you wanna make. Ask people to teach you if you just cant figured out how to make that something.

10. Imagine
Imagine in your head what you wanna do. Start your wallpaper from there.

11. Blend in
Always make sure your character blends with the background. Color of the character fits the wallpaper, the emotion of the character fits how the bg is potrayed, etc. Don't go crazy and make a dark, grungy background for a happy looking character or vice-versa.

12. Don't go crazy on the effects/bg
Dont't go crazy and put too many effects on the background. it will only become messy and ugly.

13. Know what you want to do [by smilebit]
whenever you begin a wall know what you want out of it, what you want to express through it.
write what you are going for down so you don't forget.
don't lose that original intent/idea keep it in you mind throughout the process and refer back to it whenever you waver.

If anyone have any more tips to share, please do post em. ^_^

I think the worst wallpapers are made by people who are just trying to get their points up. Sometimes they post a big mass of them and to be honest, well I think they look like rubbish.

I think your tips are very good and I espescially agree with writing down your intention so you don't get lost along the way. Also to visualise it before you start. I know from my drawing experience that if you can't see it in your head before you start drawing it, then you will not be able to draw it at all.

Nice work exentric

I like tip 10... Whenever I wall, I usually have to have an idea in mind.. Same for layouts.. If I have no idea, I have no clue where to start x_x; Then I'd just be sitting in front of the comp for countless hours doing nothing.. x_x;

The one way or the other I violate almost all rules here XD

Those are some great tips! Should try to remember those when I do my first wall.

any tips on how to cut out a stock picture image? The only way I know of is using a magnetic lasso tool for Photoshop. I don't really like it though because it leaves out some of the image sometimes. Thanks.
