Left this part of the universe.

I don't know if this has been posted or not. But I'll just do it anyway. These programs are free and effective (in my experience anyway).

Spybot-Search and Destroy
Anti-Spyware
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

You guys will probably know about this one by now. It detects and remove most of the well-known malicious dialers, key loggers and suspicious web pages.

Ad-Aware SE Personal
Anti-Spyware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Yet another well-known free anti spyware program. It is safe to say that Ad-Aware detects what Spybot missed out (and vice-versa). For extra precaution, install both of them.

Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta (credits to Shinsengumi)
Anti-Spyware
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Yep, this is an official Microsoft product and I heard it is pretty promising. Beware that this is the beta version. Don't keep your hopes up on this one.

CWS Shredder
Anti-Spyware (Cool Web Search remover)
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html

I came across this Cool Web Search spyware program and it hijacked my Explorer and messed up with the registry. If you guys have any problems in dealing with it, use this to remove it.

AntiVir Personal Edition
Free anti-virus software
http://www.free-av.com/

The best...anti-virus program...ever...The real time scan took only a minimal RAM amount and the virus definitions updates almost every 3 to 4 days. Not only that, it can even detect Backdoor virus and some of the trojan files. Give it a try.

McAfee Avert Stinger
Free anti-virus software (worms)
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

This piece is not good for overall computer protection but its effective in removing the dastardly worms variants such as Netsky and Blaster. Combined with AntiVir, this is one serious tool to have.

Zone Alarm
Firewall
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp

If you're using the built in Windows firewall, DON'T DEPEND ON IT. Zone Alarm is one of the best free firewall out there with various settings and customization.

Sygate Personal Firewall
Firewall
http://www.sygate.com/

If for some reason, you have nightmare using Zone Alarm (like me), you can try Sygate free firewall. Despite lack of customization compared to Zone Alarm, Sygate still hold its own against its rival. This is an alternative to Zone Alarm.

We use Spybot at my University. The only thing I don't like about it is that when we have a faculty member with a computer covered in spyware, Spybot tends to miss it. We usually install Adaware along with it just to make sure.

I'm sure the whole lot already know about Ad-Aware. That's why I didn't put it in there. Or maybe I was just lazy? XD

I screwed up again

At the office, when somebody's PC is smacked with nasty software we give 'em the old "one two": AdAware followed by Spybot S&D. Both products tend to miss some and pick up others.

From what I hear Microsoft's product is great too. Haven't had the opportunity to try it: when I have to clean off spyware off someone's machine I install Firefox on it as well. After that they do not seem to have spyware problems.

Okaerinasai - Welcome Home

Zone Labs is the best for me - I've used it since I first got my new computer, but I got the Pro version - which makes it the super best! lol

Good to see its on the list of what is, then what's not. Haha ^_^

I recommend Mcafee AntiSpyware 1.0. The best!!!!

I use spybot and bitdefender pro 8

The only protection I have is Avast! 4 Anti-virus. I've never had spyware, because I'm really picky about the software I install. And I don't need a firewall, because my router acts as a basic firewall. But I have looked into firewall software before, and I'd most likely use Sygate Personal.

Where is the love for SpywareBlaster?
SpywareBlaster 3.2
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

# Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
# Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
# Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.

also, how about using alternative browsers to keep you protected from internet explorer holes?
most widely used alternatives are firefox (www.getfirefox.com, 100% free) and opera (www.opera.com, small and fast, though displays an ad window if you use the free version)

Kaspersky and Nod32 are good antivirus, that dont stress the resources of the pc
Adware is good but not perfect...uhmmm....a perfect anti spyware dont exist
Zone Alarm is bad...have more holes that a swiss cheese :D Sygatae and Keryo are good firewall
I have found very useful Tuneup Utilities 2004, its have many nice tools for speedup windows....
And if you use Winxp dont forget to use XpAntispy, a small program but very useful for remove all the shit that Microsoft put in the Operating System
And as say by rblack....use Firefox instead of IE...

All this software is used by me in my work (im a software doctor :D)

Yea. If you guys are using any good programs, just put in the url and your view on it. I can't write them all down, you know...

^_^'

What about those software that can supposedly fix your registry, adware, and other malicious things. I was thinking of dling tuneup utilities 2004 so i don't have to deal with seperate programs.

To tell the truth, the firewall that comes with Service Pack 2 isn't that bad. You can customize it, and it's fairly user friendly, and has a smaller footprint than Zone Alarm, if I remember correctly.

I assume that the one that was in XP before Service Pack is the bad one that you're suggesting we avoid. . . that was very user unfriendly and not very customizable.

And I suggest using internet browser such as Firefox, as it stops spyware and popup too.

I use Ad-Aware and Norton Anti-Virus, and I hooked my system up behind a hard firewall/router, so I hope I'm pretty protected.
