I liked FF VII enough to buy an OST for it, if that says anything.

Hey! Everybody mentioned Final Fantasy and nobody mentioned the Soviet choruses from Freedom Fighters. Just close your eyes, listen to them, and feel how you get actually transported to the streets of New York, fighting the rooskies with your rebel troops.
Also, no one mentioned the NFS Underground series soundtrack. The best hip hop in this world for the menus with Xzibit, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, X-Ecutioners, Lil Jon and the Eastside Boyz; then the speediest pumpin' tracks with Mudvayne, Killradio, Paul van Dyk, Spiderbait, Jerk, Fuel, Static-X, Rob Zombie and Asian Dub Foundation.

I would have to say, Small Two of Pieces is my favorite single track from any game (the ending song after beating Xenogears). It is performed well and is a story itself, which always makes music better in my opinion. In second for single tracks, though a very distant second, would be Gang-Plank Galleon, from the final boss in Donkey Kong Country. That piece, though simple, has always kept me since I first heard it so many years ago.
As for actual games, which has the best music overall, I would personally prefer Legend of Mana's music. The pieces are all very well done and need relatively little to get me into them.
Other than a few, though, the majority of my game music is remixed pieces (from OCRemix.org).
Calling a sword by a pretty name is no more than adding perfume to poison.

1. The One Winged Angel ( Sephiroth theme )
2. The Outerworld ( FFX intro and battle vs jecht theme )and aside from that i love The Black Mages there Nobuo uematsu's rock band that play FF music in gigs and such sweet!.Jan

Except for the FF-series and chrono cross I'm also a big fan of GGX music...
And some of the music from Guilty Gear Isuka was suprisingly good.Like "The sheep will sleep (if you become fatigued)" and "The irony och chaste".

Either got to be ffvii or R4 for normal game music, Gitaroo Man or any IIDX Style for music game music. DDR got boring, but IIDX and Gitaroo Man are tough to forget. Nobuo Uematsu does rule, in response to chatvarin's post, but R4 has some really beautiful music as well. Tough call.
