The one and only

Just as the title says, list any stereotypes you feel that we as anime fans endure.

To me, it just seems like whenever I tell someone that I met recently that I am into anime, I always get a response like, "Oh..." followed by odd looks and eventual distancing between them and me. Doesn't really bother me, I mean if thats how they feel than I don't want to be friends with them anyways.

Now don't get me wrong, thats not all people, others have been really interested actually, but I think thats only because they don't want to offend me, thus they show interest rather than disdain.

Another thing I have noticed, is that whenever I am either browsing an anime forum, or looking through wallpapers here, if there is an attractive girl, all my guy friends automatically assume that I am looking at pornography. Not so much with the girls. I don't know why, but it seems that anime and porn have this link for some reason. I have heard countless stories from other anime fans who were reading manga out in public, something like Love Hina or Ai Yori Aoshi and when someone would look down at a page in it, they would always turn and walk away. One girl said her fathers friend found her reading it and made a huge seen at a party that was going on at her house because he thought she was reading pornography.

Anyone else experience any of the types of things? Others? Please share...

I think the stereotype for anime fans is that they cosplay sailor scouts, have life-size pillows of their favorite anime characters, own Hello Kitty merchandise, and have given up real girls to further pursue their dream of marrying their favorite anime girl.

People seem to think I want to be Japanese because I watch anime ~_~ . I don't want to be Japanese, but I'd sure as hell like some of the stuff they have OX .

One great response I've got from an ignorant friend when I said I like anime is "isn't that cartoon porn?". Haha the ignorance of some people.
A lot of people I meet who haven't seen anime just assume it's a mixture of extremely poor stories and hentai.

Well I unfortunately fit one of what i think is one of the older stereotypes. I'm asian, I'm kinda fat, I wear glasses, and I'm really into vidoegames and computers. So when I say I like anime no one is really surprised.

Okaerinasai - Welcome Home

I've never been an anime fan before - but I admit I was one of those people who stereotype others as anime freak nerds - and all they want to do is look at manga, and can't experience things outside in the real life for once. I totally know what you mean - what I gave here was a stereotypical view, because I am of the opposite spectrum - more of the reality-type of people who love to hang out and talk to people face-to-face rather than on looking at manga and get obsessed with anime on the net - heck, I hardly even know anime itself. I'm no hardcore fan, let alone, very little here, but I know what you mean. It won't change my outlook on anime fans overall, but I'll admit, some people are freaks of nature while at it.

And no - just because I've never heard of Naruto before doesn't mean you should go on attacking me with - "You're missing out." Point is - I have a life, no offense. So don't act all surprised. I'm very unique of this situation - most people come here with some sense of anime knowledge behind their backs. I know very little apparently about anime and its not like its running my life. I only love anime for its artwork, not for its shows pretty much. **Shrugs** That's some food for thought.

well, yeah stereotypes for anime are horrible- I hate when you mention that you enjoy anime, people believe you watch cartoons. Anime isn't cartoons, its another way of expression other than film. As for me, I've gotten that whole: 'you want to be asian' thing. I'm proud of my heritage, but asian cultures intrigue me- i respect them and find them more fastinating than my own... doesn't mean i'm trying to be asian, it just means some cultures are interesting ^_^ anime is interesting, therefore intriguing to watch- case closed ^_^

Pokemon is the worst thing to happen to anime since the DBZ fanboys, because it just degrades anime into a general sterotype of kiddish. It is easy for me to get lots ignorant negative comment from my peers when I watch anime, because they tend to have this image of only little kids watch those shows. And my age doesn't help my cause at all, because they just don't understand what I found so interesting about anime. :)

True. people that have a life and do like anime won't be looking after every anime, besides is not like you have to watch them to like them. I know how it feels when some people get to know you like anime, they suddenly build walls infront of you. In my school people love how i draw, specially anime because they think it is very hard to draw. I would say that artworks like the wallpapers here take some time.... and that makes it even more valuable.... Hentai... my cousin got scared when she saw som drawings like Athrun taking a shower. Neon Genesis.... my sister thinks i buy pornography, but all of you know this isn't true. Mi love for anime was born because of its style and how beautiful they show the body structure of a person which you usually won't even find in modern art.

Anime fan stereotypes. Hmm, I come across many of these. Lots of people I meet are afraid to even say they like anime and they just mumble something about cartoons when asked. I mean, if you like it, why do you have to be ashamed of it?

Most stereotypes of anime fans are that they are all weird people who lack major social skills and/or are hyperly obsessed (either crazed Inyuyasha fans or RK fans) fangirls or guys who are perverted and can't get a real girl so they look at cartoon ones.

Just because you like anime doesn't mean you are anti-social. Also, just because you like Naruto, or have heard of it, doesn't mean you don't have a life.

I always have viewed the worst stereotype as the misconception that anime is just Hentai porn and if you like anime your a pervert... I like anime and im not a pervert. I do like some hentai though... ;)

I know the most common misconseption that I come across is that anime is made for young kids. When people find out that I watch anime they usually ask "aren't you a bit old to be watching cartoons?" I mean seriously.

i do also find that everyone who doesn't watch anime presumes that its porn. Sure some of it is perverted but most of its not.

i also get the weakling and anti-social comments which are derogatory comments and albeit is true about some most of us aren't like that.

I think that people should get to know eachother before they form opinions.

A friend of mine told me of this incident when he attended Anime Expo couple of years ago. It just so happen that some sort of religeous convention was also being held at the same time. He came back to his hotel and was waiting for an elevator to arrive. Next to him were an old couple who was also waiting for an elevator. Then a group of cosplayer also came behind them and waited for an elevator. The old couple looked around and my friend heard a husband whisper to his wife, "Dear, we're going to wait for a next elevator " and naturaly when the elevator arrived the cosplayer and my friend got in but the old couple didn't.

i found this story both funny and sad as I consider most of anime fans the nicest people to be around. I guess some people will never try to understand.

The typical reaction that a lot of people who aren't avid watchers of anime is that they think those that like anime are freaks and nerds. Most of the time I hate it how they judge how people and the fact that anime is simply a "cartoon". I won't be one to bash on those that think that way, but I think the cliché "You can't judge a book by its cover" works pretty well.

There's always that little misconception with anime and porn. Maybe anime is a bit revealing at times, but it's too quick to judge.

Lot of people watch anime.......

That is all I have to say about this topic....

Seig Jion....Seig Jion

I watch anime, but if you met me in real life as a stranger, you wouldn't be able to tell though. The only thing that gives me away as an anime fan is the fact that I'm Asian. I'm really outgoing, have other hobbies, like to hang out with others types of ppl (that don't watch anime), like to party, etc. But I do watch anime. I guess I don't really fit the stereotypes, but oh well....

i hate the stereotype that anime fans have "no life" other than anime, some years ago when i was in highschool people used to criticize me, but later they got to really like anime in general. Nowadays, most of my friends are huge anime fans, but that doesn't mean we don't go out to party , drink or what else , every person is different, so i think it is really stupid to judge people personalities by their hobbies.

Hmm, I've never been stereotyped because I like anime. Hell, all my peers don't know what anime is, so why would they judge. But, the aforementioned stereotypes are true, and it's hard to say that they will eventually stop all together. Some people are just ignorant to anime, and they will bias fans based on prior knowledge. This being, hentai, and the pereviously mentioned "kiddy show factor" Luckily, I've never had to endure it, but it still depresses me to know it.

The one i get is that anime fans are geeks and nerds that have no life, at least thats the one I hear the most.

I'd Rather stimulate your mind than emulate your purpose

People think I can speak Japanese. I havn't told them I can't yet, but still. Others think I'm a porn collector of sorts, because everyone knows anime=porn. Some think I'm a pedophile. Anti-Social. Though, I am kinda...

People also assume that I suck up the school's bandwidth downloading anime. Yes I download anime, but not at school cause the net sucks and its not worth my time anyway. Its fine by me though, nothing they can do about it.

Finally, people assume that I prefer asian women over other women, and that I have a keen interest in the Japanese culture. I don't. I don't care about Japan anymore than I care about any other country. Though asians are hot...
