I do think too that being multilingual is very important. Not only here for the Forum or things like that but also for you job.
I learned English Spanish and Frensh so I guess I speak a lot^^
My first language is German. And I speak second best English.

I think learning different languages is important. For me, English is no biggie but my Chinese kinda stinks. Thankfully, I'm taking Chinese in high school right now and by learning Mandarin ("official" Chinese language), I'm improving my vocabulary for Cantonese (my family's kind of Chinese). I think it's important for anyone to know English because it's widely used...and of course, their own language. Latin of any sort would be helpful as well, especially in the States.

"If everyone cared and nobody cried, if everyone loved and nobody lied, if everyone shared and swallowed their pride, then we'd see the day...when nobody died. I'm singing amen I, amen I, I'm alive." - Nickelback: "If Everyone Cared."

If only, if only, the world were like this. If only, if only, it only existed.

Depends on what you do I guess. I speak English, Italian, and a wee bit of German, but I mostly just speak English all the time. Not like I look down on speaking other languages, it's just so many people from other countries speak English as a second language, nrver giving me a need to learn anything else. Then again, I wouldn't mind learning more if I had a job that required me to travel to other countries frequently to make things easier. Until then though, why bother cramming something else in my thick head?

We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
Somewhere we live inside

I think it's only safe to say one can only speak one language, maybe two. ~_~
Because you theres never a real line you have to cross so you can say 'i can speak this language', theres no such thing.
I think putting standards like being able to have a discussion in a specialised field would qualify you for a speaking a language, or if you reach the goal you want to reach by using a foreign language.
Myself i speak Dutch and English fluently (bilingual), and i study/ can speak abit of french, german, japanese, latin.I plan on learning spanish and mandarin.

I study these just for fun outside of school on the web etc. I dont really have a real motivation, i just want to travel and know alot. ;)

I think students of foreign languages have access to a greater number of career possibilities and develop a deeper understanding of their own and other cultures. I hear that some evidence also suggests that children who receive second language instruction are more creative and better at solving complex problems..

With all of these reasons, the benefits to society are many. Americans fluent in other languages enhance our economic competitiveness abroad.

On top of that, you can pick up girls from different countries too!

lets just say it would help in the job market cos u can be put into a position (business or other) and u have an advantage over other ppl who dont possess the lingual or as many lingual skills as u, so u'll be put to use really well.
i work for a company that uses english for communicating with other depts on diff countries but sometimes if u know the language its easier to communicate cos some ppl's english is just really bad. who knows u might meet ppl in another language and u wanna speak to them like wen u go on hols

Quote by chaossnakewe need to make one language and agree to use that to speak so culture gaps close

does anyone learn languages to close the culture gaps? i do it for myself. :)

I think it is very important, so I am learning English and Japanese right now, did learn French (but the teacher... was mean and very cruel... ) and actually speak German :-)

I know English, French and Spain.

Yes because I'm french and MT is also in english!

hm, yeah i guess it's important, i mean i speak english, german, bulgarian and a very tiny bit french (not good at all tho). and i still want to learn japanese so ... yeah.

Language is the barrier that divides different countries and may the a min cause for racial discriminations (apart from skin colour). In an ideal world, there is only one language with only one people. But of course that is not so.
I am bilingual in Chinese and English, not perfectly, but i survive well. I shall try to study more languages like the Chinese dialects but that will of course depend on how much time i have. Then again, i find it impractical to study a major in languages in Singapore, where i live, because most of the jobs here require more profitable modules like medicine, business, engineering, R&D.. But then again, to master a number of languages would be an advantage, and will also make us learn and understand more on other people's culture... Knowing different languages will bring people together.
There you have it, i guess, insights from a lv1 newbie :P

languages are very important to me. for one, you can say things in front of people and they wont have any idea of what you are saying XD In some other ways, it makes you more aware of the world and how much there is out there. Personally, besides english, i speak fluent spanish, some french, and im learning japanese right now. :)

Actually it is. I really like learning languages. Gives me self-esteem and pride that I know more than 1 language. Currently I know little French, little Portugese and Korean ( I'm required to learn Korean). It's not only for self esteem but if I learn there's more benifit for me right?

Learning language is very important for you to communicate w/ others, for me I want to learn other languages than english, it's fun specially if you can understand some foreign languages :D

Cynical pedant.

I love linguistics - a changed word, nuances of grammar, a slightly different inflection, all can change meaning dramatically. Unfortunately I only know English & a smattering of a few other languages (I can swear a little in French & understand a tiny bit of Japanese, & although I can't speak it I can understand Texan).

I want to learn lots of languages: Old English (trust me it's as much another language as Gaelic ever was), Latin, Japanese, Latvian, Esperanto. I want to learn to read ancient Greek, Aramaic & Hebrew, but can't be bothered with speaking them. Oh & I have a very vague idea that it would be cool to learn to speak the Kalahari Bushmen's language. Clicks & whistles.

hmm..its important then u can communicate and get round easily in life tho..me?hmm..hokkien<chinese>the basic chinese probably and malay..haha..i want to learn japanese or french^^
