I loved Tomoe. Arguably, without her, Kenshin would have never stopped being the Battousai. She changed his heart.

Kaoru also continues the process. I love them both and love what they did for Kenshin...

I don't hate her, but I don't particularly like her, either. For someone who played such an important role in Kenshin's life, she seems rather... bland, both in the OAVs and the manga. She's a bit like Kikyou from Inuyasha, if you think about it, 'though Kikyou's definitely got more of a (pms) personality. At least you know that Tomoe wouldn't come back from the dead to haunt Kenshin and drag his soul down to Hell with her...

I really hate Tomoe because she IS the person who ahs never left Kenshin by placing that scar, and became more important to Kenshin than even Kaoru. Also, Iluv kenshin,so I hate anyone who luvs him that happens to be a woman XD.

Tomoe is awesome. In many ways, Kaoru is just Tomoe lite. They share a lot of characteristics, but they're present more strongly in Tomoe.

1) They love Kenshin despite his past. Kenshin hated himself for what he did during the Bakumatsu as the battousai. The central theme of the Jinchuu arc was Kenshin's redemption, and how he intended to atone and forgive himself for the things he did. However, both of these women already have forgiven him. Kaoru specifically says in the first chapter/episode that she doesn't care about what Kenshin has done in the past. At that point in Kenshin's life, he had already vowed never to kill again. To Kaoru and Kenshin's other friends, he was a hero. On the other hand, when Tomoe fell in love with Kenshin, he was still an assassin, and would continue to kill people until the end of the Bakumatsu. Despite this, Tomoe forgives him for his sins, and loves him unconditionally.

2) Up until she meets Kenshin, Kaoru runs the dojo pretty much by herself after her father dies, which was practially unheard of at the time. This requires a considerable amount of tenacity on her part, and she performs admirably (despite some weak moments throughout the introductory Tokyo arc). However, after her husband is killed, Tomoe willingly gives up her position in a fairly high class family to go to Kyoto, the center of the Bakumatsu by herself. Even after Kenshin finds her and takes her to the inn, she stays there to work. After that, she goes to live with, essentially, an assassin. That far trumps what Kaoru has done.

3) They both sacrifice for Kenshin. By taking Kenshin in, Kaoru makes herself a target for Kenshin's enemies, most notably in the Tokyo and Jinchuu arcs. Despite the danger to herself, she stands by Kenshin. Tomoe dies to save Kenshin. I think Tomoe wins.

There's more, but I'm hungry and want to go eat.

i have to agree with sylvacoer here. i don't have anything against her. it's just that, well...sure, she's very ladylike, beautiful, quiet, graceful and all that, but she lacks the fire and spirit that kaoru has. i admire that in a person. so unfortunately, tomoe is not one of them. sorry.

erm... don't you mean the Kyoto arc??

anyways, i kind of liked Tomoe's personnality, i mean, dark and mysterious, for some reason i always fall for those characters... i also like Kaoru though, i just think both had a role to play in Kenshin's life, and they play it well... Tomoe will always be special to Kenshin, but it doesn't mean he can't move on... that's what Kaoru is there to help him do...

I agree with you there. I've got nothing against Tomoe but I find Kaoru to be far more interesting. I'm a Kaoru fan, and while I feel sort of resentful that Tomoe got to Kenshin first, I think she was good for him, at least for a while. But I feel Kaoru makes a better life partner for Kenshin. She has this innocence about her, and I think that's something that can help Kenshin get thru his rough past.

No, I mean Tokyo. In the Kyoto arc, Kaoru does help defend the Aoiya from the Juppongatana, but it's not because Shishio was targeting her. Shishio sent the Juppongatana to the Aoiya because the Oniwabanshu helped to stop his plans for the Great Kyoto Fire. In the Tokyo arc, on the other hand, we have Jin'ei specifically going after Kaoru to force Kenshin back into his battousai state.

personally i liked tomoe... she had a huge impact on kenshin's life, even more than kaoru... (and frankly kaoru DOES get on my nerves sometimes). the only thing i don't like about tomoe is the way her bangs are drawn... in that triangle- like peak thing...

I'm not fond of Tomoe, but I don't hate her. Her tale is so tragic I can't hate her. I guess I feel sorry for her.

Ah no I like her. Her personality is just like Rei Ayanami's (the mangaka's a copy cat). She really changed Kenshin and Kaoru would never manage to do so. And Kaoru's quite naive and still too young xD

to me...tomoe was more classy than Kaoru...i think they both played an important part in his life. I don't hate tomoe. I liked her very much; she didn't cry like kaoru, she didn't get mad like kaoru....but i will say that physically-wise she wasn't as beautiful as kaoru. i liked kaoru b/c she had her classy moments and she tried to do as much as she could to help kenshin. (even if she got in the way sometimes). but she was courageous and i have the utmost respect for that. ^_^
