MT allows scans that aren't of one's own so long as there is credit given.
Granted, ripping images and whatnot from someone else and just posting it elsewhere is wrong, but if they credited the people they ripped from, wouldn't it be the same as what some people do here?
The "ripping" is taking and posting without credit given, Is -that- what everyone is upset about or is it just taking and posting without asking, regardless if credit was or was not given?
Do you see what I'm getting at here?
I feel the sympathy as I've had stuff ripped from me more times than I can count - it's an occupational hazard of working online - but at the same time, with the policy we have here concerning "borrowing" images with credit...?
This signature violates the signature guidelines, thus it has been removed.

But you still didn't get what I was trying to get at. Even scans are copyrighted. Like, a scan of a pencilboard. The image is copyrighted to the company that printed it and to the person who designed it.
Also, I have never seen any company say that "You are free to take this image and alter however you want." So no, we don't have permission to use them like we do, technically. I worked for a convention that was featuring Harry Potter and Warner Brothers was VERY strict on their copyright laws. Even WITH credit given where it's due, the company refused to let us use any of their base images or logos. *shrugs*
So a scan of a pencilboard is really not that much different from a wallpaper when you look at it that way, except it is mass produced and wallpapers are more personal. I worked for a newspaper and took a business law class for a while so copyright laws are nothing new to me.
Unless specifically stated otherwise, ALL printed materials are copyrighted and are not allowed to be redistributed or altered in any form. People still do it and some companies and whatever don't really care, but it's considered a breaking of copyright rules.
Everything we scan or that was scanned by someone else, was copyrighted and distribution is "supposedly" illegal no matter which way we look at it.
Just because you made it doesn't mean the same rules don't apply. Likewise, just because you didn't make it doesn't mean the rules don't apply. And also, just because you made it, doesn't mean that suddenly, all the copyright laws work for you perfectly.
What my original question was - out of curiosity, was WHAT exactly are people upset about - the fact that people took and posted without permission or credit, or the fact that they posted, regardless if credit was given or if people's signatures were left on their wallpapers?
Again, I'm completely against ripping - taking something that isn't yours and claiming ownership because I like, you, am an artist and writer, and where copyright infringement and ripping happens, it happens.
So yeah, sorry if I pushed anyone's buttons, but I just wanted people to look outside the box.
Think of the programs you use and where you got them. Think of the base images you used and where you got them.
In conclusion though, I'm really glad that the MT staff are handling this issue the way that they are; it makes me more confident about posting stuff here at MT. o^^o

what's lizzie unhappie about ... it's about them taking wallies from here .. without permission .. and though our names are still intact, people aren't bothered at looking at them .. and instead, they thanked those who posted to these sites.and these bunch of people ... they did not contribute to our community at all too. so the purpose they joined was .. to take our wallies >.< and worst part of all ... they make those galleries look like a clone of MT.
lizzie thinks the purpose mt make it a must for us to be members and to be level 10 to gain access to scans ish to make the members take part in the community. and not to just leech without giving any comments .. though some people says that certain comments are just plain "nice" .. but there's still people who gives comments which are building and help people to improve. while in those sites .. all they do ish take your wallies .. no comments .. and you won't know whether you've improved or what ish wrong with your wallies.
anyway .. what zadkhi says ish twue .. but it still makes lizzie unhappie to know that members of mt are the ones doing them. though lizzie know it's impossible to prevent everything .. just wanna say thankew to biri for taking up your time to solve this thingy ..

Thank you for clarifying and answering my original question. And yeah, I totally sympathize and understand. :)
Leechers are the bane of artists and writers alike and it's very frustrating to have something one puts a lot of work into ripped away and distributed without given credit where due. It's why I'm happy MT is actively trying to do something about this issue.

i totall agree it sucks...but what i do is i make a certain area of the submision white..and cannot be covered up by anything a sort of "protected zone" thats only visible when you zoom in closely...and i make a cetain pattern so that way if i think that my wally is being ripped i upload the questionable image go onto photoshop ans zoom in...if i have that pattern there....LOOK out!!!! lol..i hope this may help some of you...bye

some wallpapers of Galaxy angel have recently appeared at www.theotaku.com , and I think it should be stopped! The really beautiful wallpapers like lights and stars by daos are on there, and it's not fair, other people have no right to take MT's user's work and claim it as theirs. It's totally wrong.
