JPEG and GIF are allowed for avatars, but not PNG for some reason. PNG is much more suited for avatars because it doesn't introduce lossy compression like JPEG and it supports true color, unlike GIF. For now I've just resaved the PNG as a JPEG at the highest possible quality, but that makes the file about three times bigger.

Not every computer can view png, and there is no size limitation as far as anybody can see, so there's no reason why your avatar can't be (gasp) 30k!

It doesn't matter if an avatar loses quality at all. At 50x50px; minor compressions everytime one is viewed makes little to know difference. Plus, because PNG's keep the dither levels, it makes for a huge file size.
JPG or GIF. Deal with it. Closed.
