our earth contains so many pollutants and toxins from the waste we carlessly dump in it, and hardly anything we do helps at this point. we are running out of places to put our garbage, what can possibly be done to salvage the remains of our beautiful planet?

Well one thing is to sort our trashes and throw them at the correct place.

i think that no one cares, but i do! we should stop doing all that stuff to our home and i can't believe that so little people care (compared to the rest of the world). recycle!!!! you should recycle!!! paper is totally underestimated. they think 'oh, there will be more...'. to recycle is the best way. >.<

I recently bought a box of sweets and every chocolate piece was packaged into plastic. I think that this is so stupid because you could sell all those sweets without packing each one seperately. What I want to say is that there could be made small changes that would have some great effect.

I agree with Dufoe, for those of who want to help there simply isn't the incalation to do much more than complain about it. Recyling is a good starting point. Honestly, if everyone simply put their own differences aside and really worked together there would be far less crap in the world and we could start cleaning it up as well as the cold that has taken a hold of our species hearts. But that'll never happen *shrugs* So, we're fu**ed as far as I can see.

In my opinion, the only time when humanity learns the importance of the environment is when it is already gone. Society will not truly engage any efforts to clean up until the world is on the brink of a toxic death. Only then will people realize "oh shoot, pollution's bad, ne?" But until then, any effort will remain largely ineffective as governments and industries continue to ignore environmental concerns for sake of economic growth.

well i agree with EternalParadox, the only time this planets' people will take any action, is when we're all on the brink of distruction. Even though many third world countries are already on the brink of destruction, no one takes any notice, and nothing will ever get done until we all realize our problems, and smarten up!

Because of the whole post modernest thing thats becoming popular right now, the main outlook on this kind of stuff is "who cares, i'll be dead by the time it's really a proplem." which is horrible! >=0000000~~~~~!!!!!!!! Personally i think we should do all we can to try and preserve the environment. like trying enviroment friendly products and trying to be more careful about the amount of garbage we produce. every little bit helps so we should all try and help out the environment

Some waste is possible to be burned to create biomass energy and that could help get rid of trash. With our current tech we can recycle cars, glass, and tires for new cars, shoe soles, new engines and car parts, and to strenthen asphalt(glass is used for this), and other items that use rubber, glass, or metal. To help with deforestation and air pollution and specie(i probably spelled it wrong) depletion we can: plant more trees, enforce species protection laws, recycle all wood and paper products, and get those greedy S.O.B's that we often call "business men"(although not all of them are mean and greedy thank goodness :) ) away from land with forests.

True, true, but another reason i think that we have so much garbage today is technology. sure technology is good to because among many other things it can recycle to help reduce the amount of sitting garbage, but also look around you, almost everything you see is disposable. sure thats great and all for the present time, but what about like 20 years in the future, all of this 'easy way out' disposable stuff will accumulate.

I totally agree. The nonchalance of modern society for so many basic human concerns is very disturbing. Like Shadowdawn says, many developing nations are on the verge of environmental collapse. Why? because western industrialists move their plants over to these countries so they can reduce production cost by not having to comply with their own countrie's environmental standards.

For example, we all see China's economic boom. But at what price? Entire forests gone. Lush fields gone. Birds that used to sing sweetly now croak in the smog. And farmers plant food for consumption next to rivered turned lime green by chemical runoffs. That is not the way for economic growth. Less developed nations are being exploited by industrialists. Nations need to balance preserving the environment with developing industry.

Otherwise, what good is a high standard of living when there isn't a planet earth upon which to live?

Recycling is great and effective. Little changes can create good results. But to start, you can plant a tree?

Here is the (major) problem.

1: This earth can only naturally sustain 500 million people. it's pushing 6 billion.

2: There is an effect called the "greenhouse" layer that is keeping in heat.

3: it seems that the greenhouse layer isn't doing much (the earth's temperatures have only risen a few degrees [celcius])

4: the greenhouse is actually working a lor more than we think

5: there is another effect that causes less light to pass through the atmosphere (bout 40% less atually) which means there is less heat passing through.

6: if we were to cut down on pollution, that layer would disappear and the greenhouse layer will go crazy and the earth's temperature would rize about 15 degreese celcius (note, it's a pleasant day at 20 degreese celcius here)

7: (unrealted) in 35 years, the world will run out of petrolium. ie. no petrolium products like certain paints, plastics, sinthetic fibres etc.

To be honest, you can't stop polution. I used to think that way, until I started researching.

The world... creates a cycle. When someone overbuilds, they tend to run low on supplies. Because of that, they break into small groups and begin to have wars over small things, like a little grain. Because they tear themselves apart and the remaining ones either flee or starve, the forrest begins to regrow. Then... humans return and abuse the land again.

Forrests don't grow over night, but in due time, a wasteland can become a lush, green rain forrest if properly taken care of. All it needs is care in the start, and at a certain point, it can then carry it's own weight, so to speak.

You make a great point I totally agree with you on that. You are insanely correct that a higher standard of living is worthless if an earth to live on is missing?I mean scientists say that we might be able to live on Mars but what if that's impossible?God only made Earth inhabitable for a reason so why should he allow us to live on Mars if it's our fault that Earth is ruined anyway?I think that we need to make serious changes especially since America makes 70% of global trash.Oy it's awful.... Oh did you know that there is a whole in the ozone about the size of North America?Even if we stopped pollution it would take 50 years for it to completely repair itself...

Well instead of getting into a car, walk... Um, carpool if there is more than one person needing to get to the same place. Recycle.
