How far would you go for the sake of science?

Okay, I just thought of this because of my first hand experience with cadaver dissection. (It is a course requirement. I got over the initial shock, but somehow, I'm still bothered by incising Jane Doe's body.)

So... Einstein's brain was extracted from his head and preserved for scientists to study, so that they may explain his prowess in Physics. Galen and Hippocrates (if i'm not mistaken), dissected cadavers centuries ahead and studied them. Now, technology is speeding up research processes that scientists don't have time to stop and take a breath. DNA splicing, genetic engineering, in vitro fertilization and stem cell research...

Are you willing to do anything for the sake of science?

um no. My body is immortal so i will never have to rely on medical science plus i bet these scientists will have so many unwilling subjects that they can afford to attach wheels to them and skate around their labs on their backs, u know for productivity sake :)

I've often imagined having scientists uncovering some mystery out of my body even after I've died, but I'm not sure how far I'd really go...

no science is very evil. scientists are the reason why we have the hydrogen bomb. also a scientist invented the first gun.
then missiles. next we are going to have giant space lasers that will bloww up a planet. why dont they make something usefull like a missile that you can ride> think of the attraction really

Scientists invented the computer you're using, and the internet which makes this site possible :-P

Seriously though, they could cut my body up in science class post-mortem for all I care. I'll already be dead, and might as well contribute to the general amusement or learning of others ;-)

okay... so let's stretch this a bit... how about...

are you willing to forsake ethics, morality and even your loved ones (cheesy, huh) just for your personal gain?

Ethics maybe, as long as my motives are good and beneficial to others.

Morality, probably. -_-

But not my faith and loved ones.

Forsake ethics and morality for scientific gain?

...::laughs::

You`re assuming I *have* ethics and morality. Id do it in a heartbeat, with nothing to forsake.

Family and friends? They`d have to be carrying one hell of a secret, like biological immortality, telekinesis, DBZ-style ki powers, etc.

I'll do anything I need to for information. If one sad life was artificially created to save thousands of people, I'm alright with that. If a person is dead, why not rip them apart?

Wtf is your problem?!?

Why the f*** do I need to use proprietary filetypes in my signature and avatar? Stupid Minitokyo... STUPID COMPU$ERVE! Use png instead.

That really depends on what part of science. I'll go as far as I can go with science as long as I don't cross any moral boundries. As long as I don't have to do any thing that I consider morally wrong, I'll probably do it. So I may study a walrus, but I won't extract stem cells.

Whats the big deal about stem cells? Honestly, everyone makes out like you`re harvesting from actual human beings.

Somehow I doubt you can count a little cluster of cells that hasnt even really differentiated yet, let alone formed the neccesary things for sensory processing beyond the most basic of chemical exchange neccesary for growth, a human being. And as far as it being a *potential* human being? ::snorts:

Millions of women end up getting pregnant and never even realize it, because some malfunction in the cell division leads to an inviable embryo and its washed away before anyone notices a thing. Surely you cant believe what happens all the frelling time in nature is somehow immoral for humanity to do..please, tell me y`all dont believe that..

The difference(in my opinion) is that its not bad if done naturally. If its done intentionally, its bad. But that's just how I feel.

The issue about stem cells is that these are extracted from embryo... it's like this... you'll be fertilizing an egg cell not to produce a baby, but to produce something to repair physical anomalies (treat spinal cord injuries, etc.)... in a way, it's like killing something that has a chance to live for someone to increase his/her chances to live.

personally, i'm fine with stem cell research, especially in junction with fertility clinics. (In fertility clinics, multiple egg cells are fertilized to increase the probability of successful pregnancies. As soon as a zygote (or two) is implanted, the other fertilized cells are discarded.) For me, it's better to "use" the leftover fertilized cells rather than to throw them away. But then...

What else can you say?
