I was really suprised when I found out Akito's a girl. In the anime, it was not revealed.

It says Akito is a woman in voulume 12 or 13. It is the rooster who tells Tohru. Akito's mom (Ren Sohma) decides to raise him as a man, though.

Actually I think that the writer made Akito a girl from the beggining because you can see her all the time in all those..ahem..intimate poses with Shigure. And also that explains her hatred for all of the girls in FB. Akito's mom, Ren, was kind of a psycho so when Akito's father (the previous head of family) died, she made Akito grow up as a boy. So that is why everybody reffers to her as a boy. The only ones that know the secret are Shigure, Ayame, Hatori and Kureno.

This is true. Akito is acutally a woman, and it's not until volume 15 that the audience finds this out. I can't wait to find out the reason why. ^_^ I'm excited. She always looks like a man, but in volume 15, there's a panel ((Which I have seen)) where Akito is standing in front of a mirror, and Tohru is behind her. Akito is looking at Tohru through the mirror and the front of her kimono is undone, showing that she does, indeed, have a chest.
((WHo'd have thought that Akito has fangirls... lol))

he's only a woman in the manga, it tells you that in volume 17 and kureno doesn't transform when he's hugged because his curse was lifted.

Omg..he's a WOMAN?! I didn't realise that! I haven't read till volume 11 yet and it doesn't say in the anime that he's a she. That changes my whole perception of Akito. And that gave me a huge shock. Very huge.

Yeah, heard about that a while back from a friend who's following the originals... She's a woman, and Shigure and her have a "thing", and all of that just twists the whole story even more; "so she's a girl? why does she dress/act seemingly masculine? what is that thing between her and Shigure? what is Shigure really up to?" the story just gets deeper and darker. That's what I love about Fruits Basket, how its so light and cute, but there's so many dark undercurrents, and things -- and people -- are not as they seem. It blends light and dark drama in an expert and elegant manner. [/ode to Furuba, lol]

Shigure is trying to create chances for the curse to weaken...that's what he's up to. b/c there is no way to break the curse.. it's just gradually weakening..like Hatori is the dragon, originally the one cursed with the dragon really did change into a dragon but the curse got weaker and weaker until it got to Hatori changing into a seahorse. (seahorses are considered baby dragons)

....everyone is rid of the curse towards the end with yuki being last... ayame and mine are offically together, kyo and tohru are together, yuki and machi are together, i think uo-chan and kureno are also offically together, shigure and akito are together FINALLY!, i think hatori and mayu-chan are together FINALLY!, ... hmmm... what else...,
i think that kyo and tohru are going to live together... the family finally finds out that akito's a girl... haha at first ritsu thinks that akito has the same hobby as him.. h a h a h a... it was funny ... ^^'
*sighs* hmm...and if your that far... tohru's mother didn't really hate kyo for not saving her... when she said "i won't forgive you" she was trying to tell him that if he didn't keep his promise to protect tohru (which he made when he was really little) she wouldn't forgive him because she wasn't going to be able to be there for tohru so HE had to be there..

Sakura0chan you haven't seen hte mang? Well in my opinion its alot better than hte movies. Well, I haven't seen all of the movies, but the ones I've seen aren't as good. i haven;t thought about it, it was a shock for me too. After I found out about that the puzzle came togheter, I understood why he hated wemen, why shigure was so atached about her and so on an so forth. great turn in the manga, it's waaay better then I have thought, i love it

A surprise totally from left field. But it kinda puts her an Yuki's relationship in the anime under a new light. Her recent femeninity doesn't make her any less of a sadistic freak.
