Why do you Conform??

Do you conform? I was thinking about that today and I thought I would see what you thought. As a rule, I don't generally conform to anything except for the basic moral precepts of society. I don't wear what others wear just to fit in. I don't buy things because everyone else does. I realized a short time ago that it really annoys me when people just go along with the program. For example, do you wear a Live Strong or Susan B Coleman bracelet because it means something to you or because you feel like you should. Did you put that patriot flag sticker on your car because you really cared??? I have a friend you went a little overboard in my opinion and had a special bumber sticker made. It says "Bandwagon patriot since 9/11." I don't approve of that, but it really made me think. I realized that although I really don't conform to the accepted view or behavior in most cases; I sometimes conform just to avoid trouble. I literately agree(or at least give tacit permission) just so I don't have to discuss an issue. For example, I didn't approve of going to war in Iraq; however, I didn't go around arguing about it or defending my position because I knew very well that most people would just look at me and think TRAITOR. It wouldn't matter what I said or what I thought was a better idea. If I was lucky, they would think I was just really stupid.

If you would challenge me, then you must first stand before the Darkness. You must look into it and become it. You must fall before it and then reach out to encompass it. When it is joined to your heart, you must overcome its insidious temptation. You are ready to face me when you can betray even your own heart in service to your cause.

Me...I dont conform at all. Not even to most of the moral precepts of society. A few I do, I suppose, but more because I agree with them. Those are few and far between.

Personally, its a sign of weakness to conform. Im not into this whole social-monkey thing most humans got going on. Oh, I like being around people like m`self, but Im not gonna change who I am just to get that. Id rather hunt down the folks like me and be around them.

And as far as making my opinion known...oh, baby, I love it. I *love* getting people angry, defending my position, shooting down their ill-conceived logic. Its a game and Im addicted to it.

Lazy days...

i guess my conformity depends on the circumstances. for instance, in clothing, i like to buy what's in style and the latest thing out there. in social situations sometimes i like to fit in and not be the odd ball so sometimes i'll go along with the crowd and not make waves if i'm not with my really close group of friends. i guess i conform in those situations because i do admit that i am concerned about what others think of me. i would be lying if i said i had a "i don't give a f*ck" attitude about other peoples' impressions are of me. but i am learning and trying to be less concerned with others' opinions of me because i realize you can't please everyone and you just gotta be yourself.

but other times i'm not so easily swayed, especially in terms of my moral and political beliefs. i'm not a conformist in those respects, especially since my views are in the minority in mt and where i live. so i do conform to a certain extent, but i don't think i'm a mindless idiot, either.

I used to conform big time, not in what I bought (cos I never had that much money or anything), but in how I acted and what I said. Now that I've moved away from home and have ghone to University, I just don't. I'm not alone, now, though, since a lot of Uni students are just like me - trying to make their way own their own two feet.
I like nice clothing, but like it because it actually looks nice and not because its 'in' or 'cool' or whatever. I like rock music because... well, because I like listening to it, and not because Evanescence was on the charts and is 'cool' with some 'goths'. I can't think of anything else much right now, but I guess that sums me all up conformity-wise.

~ Erase & Rewrite ~

Quote by wolfcoI realized that although I really don't conform
to the accepted view or behavior in most cases; I sometimes conform just to avoid trouble.

Same here! I don't agree with a lot of things but I don't say "I don't agree" unless I'm asked. I guess I'm too lazy, and like you said, I try to avoid trouble...
But I never lie or say something I don't think just to "fit in".

a couple of yeras ago I was afraid of saying my opinion about certain things... lets face it I'm always part of the "minority" and it felt odd having to argue about, lets say religion, against 20 people... Back then, I never spoke my mind... now it's different.

I say my opinion if I'm asked or if someone pisses me off and I have to answer to his/her comment.

About clothes... I don't know... I wear the things I like. If it's something "cool" that everyone "has to have", but I do not like it, I don't wear it.

It is highly unlikely that you people here who claim not to conform actually don't. Some things are so common that you just don't think about why and how you do them.

Anyway, to get some proper psychology insight into the matter, I have prepared the following text:

Identification.

A defense mechanism whereby a person takes on the qualities of another person to reduce the fear and anxiety toward that person.

Identity may involve taking on the properties of others or even objects, as one's own. It may be subtle and may involve role taking, identifying with a character in a film or novel, acting like one's friends or parents, imitating, etc.

The problem of identity also involves equivocation because it is not clear which types of identity are referred to: psychiatric, sociological, psychological, philosophical, racial, social, sexual, biological, political, power, etc. One may reject racial and other identities in favor of personal identity.

As a defense mechanism, one may identify with the deceased person as an attempt to compensate somehow for the loss, or identify with someone wronged to thereby punish oneself, or identity with a person who has the qualities one lacks.

Identification may be a conviction that one is other than one is so as to deny one's unacceptable qualities. Knowledge of oneself, one's language, others, and the environment determine the kind of identity assumed. As discussed earlier, a person is the assessments or metaphors they have of themselves.

Examples:

1. Ever since she saw "Love Story" she keeps wanting to find her man and die.
2. A nonparticipant says, "We won the game."
3. He never held his cigarette like that until he met Helen.

From another resource -

The unconscious modeling of one's self upon another person. One may also identify with values and attitudes of a group. Examples: (1) without being aware that he is copying his teacher, a resident physician assumes a similar mode of dress and manner with patients. (2) a school girl wants her mother to buy her the same kind of shoes her classmates are wearing; she angrily rejects the idea that she is trying to be like the other girls and insists that the shoes are truly the best available and are the style she has always wanted.

I don't conform. Some things I do are agreement with society, others are blasphemy. If anything, others conform with me...

Unless, of course, I am required by some sort of rule(s) to do so. Or, maybe due to the lack of a wide variety of options.

your right leaders are becoming scarse and the ones we do have are tyrants... or just plain stupid

~oh by the way i think this statement is very true and smart, it takes a smart person to relize things like this.~

Go to the battlefield firmly confident of victory, and you will come home with no wounds whatever. Engage in combat fully determined to die and you will be alive; wish to survive in the battle and you will surely meet death. When you leave the house determined not to see it again you will come home safely; when you have any thought of returning you will not return. You may not be in the wrong to think that the world is always subject to change, but the warrior must not entertain this way of thinking, for his fate is always determined.

I don't try to conform or be a "non-conformist." I just do what I like and if it's different or the same, who cares?

... I do tend to attract a lot of weirdos though, but I shouldn't talk.

because there is not one shred of individuality left in the world. Everything that you do can be likened to someone else. Also because humans are geniunly a social being and need to be with others for a large percentage of their lives. In all sociaty it's proven that the group is more willing to accept one into their group when they can releate to them and since we like to make assumptions about someone from the visual perspective it is easier to get to know them after you have superficially accepted them. To say you don't conform just lumps you into another group and thus you have inadvertenly conformed. Comformity is life.

I'll confrom for a job interview, but that's all.

I'll conform to it when i deem it as required. For the greater good at a little expense of myself. x_x

I don't conform. I don't have the clothes that the normal peeps at our school wear. I don't listen to the music they listen to either. Actually I don't listen to the radio at all. Those people who have no individuality are those who conform and are hypnotised by mass commercialism and are blatantly silly (interchangeable with stupid) to think that wearing that crap in the magazines would make them cool.

Now tell me, how are fluffy pink muffs, a big pink jacket and a pink miniskirt cool in winter? Hm. In the sense you'll be freezing, perhaps.

I conform to ideas that I consider to help people in general. I also conform to "the law" even though I don't agree with all of them. >_<

Other then that there is no need. Others do it because they don't feel like having their own opinion. Its just human behavior I think.

The funny thing about conformity is how unescapable it is. Do I conform? Absolutely, otherwise I would not be able to function in society. Society has a way of dealing with it's "deviants." In so much that regardless of where you turn (path wise), there's a bunch of others who are doing the same thing. I'm certainly not happy with it -- but that's just sort of the way things are. Yeah, I don't wear the bracelets, or display the flag, but so do good majority of people I know. There's always a box that you're trapped in. The difference is knowing it for what it is or ignoring it.
