S: (n) pervert, deviant, deviate, degenerate (a person whose behavior deviates from what is acceptable especially in sexual behavior)i am, of course, assuming that you are referring to sexual perversion. Judging from the definition (more like synonyms to me :\), a pervert is different as the rules of society change. A general sexual "deviant" would be a molester, a rapist, and people who like what can be thought of as strange sex (i.e. bondage).
Now, to actually answer the question: How can you know if someone is a pervert?
My immediate answer is that you really cannot know without some sort of evidence. Just because someone is a pervert does not mean they cannot use self-control, therefore they can hide their perversion from the world and mess around on their own time or if they can get away from it, should their perversion prove illegal. Obviously, a person making forceful and undesired advances on you could be dubbed a pervert, or perhaps a convicted rapist/molester (let us assume they weren't wrongly convicted). As for your average joe, you cannot really know until it is too late, or if they lose self-control for a small period of time. However, try to not confuse being perverted with having a sex drive.
By this same definition, a person who watches pornography in some places is a pervert, while a person in another place is not (whether or not the current society views pornography as moral, or at least, not immoral). Also, different types of pornography may or may not change his/her status as a pervert. For example, some people may find animated porn (hentai, anyone?) to be perverted, but regular porn to be just fine.
And I kind of drifted off the main idea...But I'll keep the above paragraph for some extra information, because I can.
My conclusion:
You cannot know someone is a pervert just by looking at them, unless they are walking around naked (or something to that extent) or visibly making forced, unwanted sexual advances. PDA (Public Displays of Affection) may also be thought of as being perverted, actually. However, if someone admits to being into bondage, then they are a pervert (unless, of course, society thinks bondage is normal stuff), but that doesn't mean they are bad people. The word "pervert" carries huge negative connotations, so I would refrain from unecessarily describing someone as a pervert, unless they are the harmful kind.Hurray for an uneccessary semi-analysis!
